21.01.2022 Although we may not have students physically coming into Tranby during COVID, our campus has been brightened with some heritage visitors recently! This is Tony, lending a hand and yarning about his process of strengthening and restoring our sandstone buildings. Did you know that the Tranby main building dates back to 1840? The foundation of this building is sandstone and interestingly, to hold the stones together architects commonly used shell middens which gave extra... strength to the building. These shell middens which consist of broken shell matter were commonly found all around the coastal regions of Australia, where Aboriginal clans would hunt, gather and eat together. At the time of colonisation, these shell middens were often seen only for their building purposes but today, they are acknowledged for their archaeological importance in showing and learning from how communities, ate, hunted and travelled from place to place. Nowadays, shell middens are no longer used as a building material but seeing these shell middens remain part of the Tranby campus is a warm reminder that our connection to this land, like our ancestors, goes far deeper than the buildings we stand on. Working from this campus, its another proud reminder for our team that this place holds much community history, that extends far beyond Tranbys 63 years because this place always was and always will be, Aboriginal land. This crucial Heritage restoration work is proudly funded by the NSW Government under the 2019-2021 Caring for State Heritage Grants program. The Tranby team thanks the NSW government for their important support in ensuring that our campus can continue providing our community a place of learning and connection in a safe heritage campus. #NSWheritage #Aboriginalsydney #Aboriginalhistory #Australianhistory #placeofknowledge #educate #achieve #empower #Tranbycampus #Glebe #Glebeheritage @ Glebe, New South Wales See more

20.01.2022 Love this deadly new artwork The Subtle Violence of Social Silence by Tim Guider in Redfern. This powerful piece speaks the harsh truth that television media often excludes from Australians nightly News. Look up, look around and keep speaking out about the systemic injustice that plagues this land. ... The way forward is to dismantle this culture of silence, to actively listen to our Mob and to reinvest justice funding into Communities not police. #justicereinvest #buildcommunitynotgaols See more

19.01.2022 After 63 years of providing Aboriginal-controlled education to mob from all around Australia, Tranby was thrilled to launch our first-ever online diploma course this week! This project has been many years and yarns in the making and our whole team was so excited to offer this incredible study opportunity to more than 40 Indigenous students from all over Australia. Brining culture and connection to community in the online space has been more important then ...ever under the current Covid-19 restrictions. Here is a sneak peak at some of the deadly videos we created as part of the Tranby online learning experience. Big shout out to Wiradjuri Elder Aunty Donna Ingram who performed this acknowledgment for Tranby Stay tuned for updates and some snippets from our live yarning circles with students in the next few weeks. # Findyourpower #EDUCATE #ACHIEVE #EMPOWER #Aboriginaleducation #community #Indigenousknowledge #Indigenousteaching See more
19.01.2022 As we launched our first-ever online diploma this week, our CEO Belinda shared some important words with our new students... -------------- "Studying as an adult is challenging but I encourage you to lean into that discomfort... But dont be afraid to reach out and say, Im struggling with this because its okay to reach out and get help... We want you to be successful in this learning journey, we want you to achieve that personal success. And congratulations on takin...g the first steps to enrol. Thats a big step in itself, to make the decision to study ------------- These words remind us that Its important to celebrate the little steps in your learning journey because every step towards your dream, no matter how small, is an incredible achievement. We are so proud of all our new students for taking that first step and enrolling. And our team looks forward to supporting them along this learning journey.. #Aboriginaleducation #Educate #Achieve #Empower #Findyourpower #studyattranby #education #bymob #formob See more
18.01.2022 Our flag symbolises our resilience, our community strength and our deep connection to Country. 18.01.2022 When our team welcomes new students on campus (virtually or face-to-face) we always ask why they want to study at Tranby... This is an important way to encourage our students to reflect on why they are here and what they want to achieve from their studies when they walk through our doors. We love this quote from our incredible student Jaime @pearso79, a Gamilaroi and Wiradjuri woman, currently studying in Tranbys first-ever online Aboriginal Studies diploma from the Ngar...rindjeri Nation in South Australia. One of the many reasons that our students choose to learn about Aboriginal history and culture is because they want to learn from mob and connect deeply with their identity so that they can share this knowledge with their jarjums (kids). Learning culture to share it with our young ones is such an important and powerful reason for studying as an adult and although there are added challenges when studying as an adult, connecting your jarjums to culture is often one of the best motivators. Never forget, the first step along your learning journey is deciding why its a path you want to take... So tell us - why did or do you, want to study as an adult? #educate #achieve #empower #Aboriginaleducation #adulteducation #vocationaleducationandtraining #Communityempowerment #communitylearning #culture #circlelearning See more
18.01.2022 Songlines tell the age-old story of how we are all linked across this country... "The songlines are like a vast fishing net. If you were to hold out a fishing net and look at all the lines that are interconnected, they are like the trade routes, the dreaming tracks, the ancient tracks. And the diamonds that are formed within those nets are all the great clan groups across this country" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33O08xrQpR8

16.01.2022 Have you met Mitchel Gibbs, Tranbys Digital Support Officer? Mitch is a Dunghutti man from Kempsey NSW and a proud member of the local Aboriginal land council there. Our team was thrilled to have him join our Tranby family earlier in the year and his work has been vital to the support of our first ever online cohort which has Indigenous students connecting together from around Australia. He is great at yarning with and supporting our students, and understands the ch...allenges of balancing study and work firsthand. Mitch has a Bachelors in Forensic Science and Chemistry, with Honours and he is currently completing his PhD (Doctorate in Philosophy) in climate change in marine biology. He is a passionate advocate for environmental justice and Indigenous knowledge in Australia and globally. Recently, in his pre-covid life, Mitch had the incredible opportunity of partaking in a cultural exchange to the USA where he participated in cultural learning with First Nations peoples of America, New Zealand and Canada. And what brings him to Tranby? As Mitch puts it, As a proud Dunghutti man who deeply values the power of education, I was excited by the opportunity to work with Tranby to support Indigenous-led education models that inspire community-driven empowerment. #Educate #achieve #empower #Tranbyteam #dunghutti #community #Communityempowerment #Aboriginal #Aboriginaleducation See more
16.01.2022 We love hearing our students motivations for studying with Tranby! @angie_lee_7 from the Palawa mob, is a new Tranby student, studying online from the Mornington Peninsula located on the lands of the Boon Wurung / Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation. Although its sad to have an empty campus without students at the moment, our team is happy to have transitioned our Diploma of Aboriginal studies online so that we can continue educating, connecting and empowering our commu...nity members from around Australia. During this challenging time it is vital that we stay connected to Community, culture and Country and our Team is thrilled to be able to do so with many new students during our weekly online yarning circles. 16.01.2022 Did you Mob see the article about one of our incredible alumni, Wiradjuri woman Emma Griggs in the Koori Mail, hot off the press this month?! We love hearing stories from our past students and yarning about the ways studying at Tranby gave them the confidence to get where they wanted to be on their life journey. Its so special to work everyday with Mob to create more inclusive and culturally appropriate education pathways for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ...community. Thats what brings our team joy, working to help Mob get the education thats meaningful to them and supporting them to achieve their education, employment and community goals. I enrolled in the Diploma of Applied Aboriginal Studies at Tranby in particular because, as much as I wanted to further my understanding, I wanted to hear the information and learn from our people first I wanted to make sure the information I was taking in was culturally appropriate, and something I found really valuable was knowing I was being taught by Aboriginal people. All Tranbys courses are proudly written for Community and undertaken with Community and thats what makes Tranby such a special place of knowledge sharing for Mob, around Australia. ---------- Do you have a story from Tranby that you want to share? Because wed love to hear it! 16.01.2022 Utyerre Apanpe recognises the knowledge and practices of First Nations educators, which have been passed through generations. "We recognise our responsibilities and the role of our elders and our ancestors." This important project will create a better future for our Mob. This is what the government should be supporting when they talk about wanting to Close the Gap. Its not about fitting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids and peoples into Australias current educat...ion system, it should be about learning from our ways of learning and teaching to incorporate that knowledge into a new, inclusive education system. https://vimeo.com/393825482
14.01.2022 The Tranby team is excited to introduce our new receptionist to campus! Meet Seraeah Wyles, a Girramay / Warrgamay woman from the Girringun Region of Cardwell and Ingham Rainforest and Saltwater country in North Queensland. We are happy to welcome Seraeah as the newest addition to our team and have already loved having her fun energy and laughter around campus. ... She is a deadly fit for Tranby, and we owe a big thanks to the mob at Aboriginal Employment Strategy for finding her to fill our receptionist role. @aesredfern, like Tranby, works to empower our community, providing them with the best opportunities for employment and career pathways. They support Aboriginal adults to gain the skills, training and confidence required to make their employment journey a success. 13.01.2022 Regardless of where we live, or who our mob is, we can all go through tough times, times when we dont feel great about our lives or ourselves. Thats why its important to always be looking out for each other. If someone you know a family member, someone from your community, a friend, neighbour or workmate is doing it tough, they wont always tell you. Sometimes its up to us to trust our gut instinct and ask someone who may be struggling with life Are you OK?. ... By asking and listening, we can help those we care about feel more supported and connected, which can help stop them from feeling worse over time. Thats why this campaign has a simple message: Lets talk. We are stronger together ( R U Ok Stronger Together Campaign 2020) Here at Tranby we are committed to supporting this invaluable campaign and take pride in ensuring that everyone we engage with including staff, current students, past students and the wider community feel supported in their environments. 12.01.2022 "When we talk about traditional Country... we mean something beyond the dictionary definition of the word. For Aboriginal Australians... we might mean homeland, or tribal or clan area, and we might mean more than just a place on the map... For us, Country is a word for all the values, places, resources, stories and cultural obligations associated with that area. It describes the entirety of our ancestral domains... Country underpins and gives meaning to our creation b...eliefs the stories of creation form the basis of our laws and explain the origins of the natural world to us... So when we acknowledge traditional Country, as increasingly people do in Australia, it is no empty ritual: it is to acknowledge who we, the Aboriginal people, are and our place in this nation. It is to take special note of a place and the people who belong to it." ~Wisdom spoken by Professor Mick Dodson By the very talented @lifeofrubii ....... #Country #connection #community #dadirri #acknowledgement #Aboriginallamd See more

11.01.2022 While the exact origins of COVID-19 have not yet been confirmed, the link between environmental damage and pandemics is well known to leading research organizations. But there is yet another group of experts, who have been worrying about the threat of a pandemic even before COVID-19: Indigenous peoples. Thanks to their traditional knowledge and their relationship with the natural world, they have long known that the degradation of the environment has the potential to unleas...h disease. As we fight against the spread of the pandemic, it is more important than ever to safeguard indigenous peoples and their knowledge. Their territories are home to 80% of the worlds biodiversity and they can teach us much about how to rebalance our relationship with nature and reduce the risk of future pandemics. Indigenous peoples are seeking their own solutions to this pandemic. They are taking action and using traditional knowledge and practices such as voluntary isolation, and sealing off their territories, as well as preventive measures. (UN.org) Like Tranby, our Indigenous peoples resilience to withstand and adapt to environmental and community changes has been a long road but with strong leadership and community our people have survived and will continue to survive through the COVID-19 pandemic whilst also not forgetting that we are not alone and this is a global struggle for all our Indigenous peoples of the world #onelove #aboriginalpeople #firstnationspeople #Indigenouspeople #Indigenouspeoplesresilience #tranbyadulteducation #un4indigenous #fao #Communityempowerment #indigenousvoices #selfdetermination See more

11.01.2022 Did you see this article about Tauondi Aboriginal college in the Koori Mail last month? Tauondi, like Tranby and other Aboriginal-controlled education organisations, has been hard hit by large funding cuts that are preventing their ability to continue providing quality and culturally meaningful education to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Aboriginal-controlled vocational education and training (VET) is vital for our mob because it supports our comm...unities and their ways of learning and success. Cutting vital services like these hurt community and directly impact our organisations ability to serve our communities and inspire grassroots change. 04.01.2022 Happy Indigenous Literacy day! Do you know why this day is so important? In Australia, 40% of Aboriginal adults have low literacy. There are many reasons for this due to Australias past government policies which excluded Aboriginal peoples from public education. Did you know that in NSW, it was legal to exclude Aboriginal children from schools up until 1972? That is less than 50 years ago! ... Improving Indigenous literacy in our communities is extremely important but to make real change, these programs must be led by Indigenous peoples, organisations and communities themselves. Tranby as an Aboriginal-controlled education provider has a long history of empowering Indigenous adults through culturally-safe education that is meaningful to students and relevant to their lives. In the 1980s Tranby successfully lobbied for government funding and the structure of our courses changed to compensate for the failures of mainstream education. During this time, it enabled Tranby to provide certificate courses in literacy and numeracy to our community. These courses were vital to empowering Indigenous peoples throughout NSW and around Australia. The Tranby difference is that we teach through culture and our course are designed and taught by Indigenous educators to ensure our students are culturally supported along their learning journey. Despite Tranby being 63 years strong, we face funding challenges to continue providing excellent education opportunities to Indigenous adults around Australia. Today, during Indigenous Literacy Day, our team encourages you to spend just 10 minutes learning about the history of Aboriginal-controlled education to see why organisations like Tranby are vital to supporting Indigenous peoples, growing Indigenous leaders and making change happen. #Educate #Achieve #empower #indigenousliteracyday #indigenousliteracyfoundation #Aboriginaleducation #Communityempowerment #community See more
