Our juvenile justice detention centres are already full with children, in particular children being held on remand and not even convicted, however these children are forced to rot in prison, subjected to psychological, emotional, spiritual and physical abuse. I have too many nieces & nephews to be comp...lacent. I am for no child EVER being incarcerated. This is a deep reminder of the blood and leadership of this country. Even in the mist of a national black lives matter movement we are again reminded that black lives DO NOT matter. 21.01.2022 Happy Indigenous Literacy day! Do you know why this day is so important? In Australia, 40% of Aboriginal adults have low literacy. There are many reasons for this due to Australias past government policies which excluded Aboriginal peoples from public education. Did you know that in NSW, it was legal to exclude Aboriginal children from schools up until 1972? That is less than 50 years ago! ... Improving Indigenous literacy in our communities is extremely important but to make real change, these programs must be led by Indigenous peoples, organisations and communities themselves. Tranby as an Aboriginal-controlled education provider has a long history of empowering Indigenous adults through culturally-safe education that is meaningful to students and relevant to their lives. In the 1980s Tranby successfully lobbied for government funding and the structure of our courses changed to compensate for the failures of mainstream education. During this time, it enabled Tranby to provide certificate courses in literacy and numeracy to our community. These courses were vital to empowering Indigenous peoples throughout NSW and around Australia. The Tranby difference is that we teach through culture and our course are designed and taught by Indigenous educators to ensure our students are culturally supported along their learning journey. Despite Tranby being 63 years strong, we face funding challenges to continue providing excellent education opportunities to Indigenous adults around Australia. Glebe youth service is an incredible pillar of our community, always supporting and listing to our young people. Walking into GYS you instantly feel welcomed and their incredible staff lead with compassion, fun and humour. We are so proud to share our Glebe community with incredible organisations like them! 08.01.2022 Although we may not have students physically coming into Tranby during COVID, our campus has been brightened with some heritage visitors recently! This is Tony, lending a hand and yarning about his process of strengthening and restoring our sandstone buildings. Did you know that the Tranby main building dates back to 1840? The foundation of this building is sandstone and interestingly, to hold the stones together architects commonly used shell middens which gave extra... strength to the building. These shell middens which consist of broken shell matter were commonly found all around the coastal regions of Australia, where Aboriginal clans would hunt, gather and eat together. At the time of colonisation, these shell middens were often seen only for their building purposes but today, they are acknowledged for their archaeological importance in showing and learning from how communities, ate, hunted and travelled from place to place. Nowadays, shell middens are no longer used as a building material but seeing these shell middens remain part of the Tranby campus is a warm reminder that our connection to this land, like our ancestors, goes far deeper than the buildings we stand on. Working from this campus, its another proud reminder for our team that this place holds much community history, that extends far beyond Tranbys 63 years because this place always was and always will be, Aboriginal land. This crucial Heritage restoration work is proudly funded by the NSW Government under the 2019-2021 Caring for State Heritage Grants program. 05.01.2022 Have you met Mitchel Gibbs, Tranbys Digital Support Officer? Mitch is a Dunghutti man from Kempsey NSW and a proud member of the local Aboriginal land council there. Our team was thrilled to have him join our Tranby family earlier in the year and his work has been vital to the support of our first ever online cohort which has Indigenous students connecting together from around Australia. He is great at yarning with and supporting our students, and understands the ch...allenges of balancing study and work firsthand. Mitch has a Bachelors in Forensic Science and Chemistry, with Honours and he is currently completing his PhD (Doctorate in Philosophy) in climate change in marine biology. He is a passionate advocate for environmental justice and Indigenous knowledge in Australia and globally. Recently, in his pre-covid life, Mitch had the incredible opportunity of partaking in a cultural exchange to the USA where he participated in cultural learning with First Nations peoples of America, New Zealand and Canada. And what brings him to Tranby? 03.01.2022 Attention Glebe mob! Come check out our deadly new street library when you are next walking down Mansfield street! The Tranby team is thrilled to add this colourful and community-minded space to our campus. During COVID we think it’s been really important to focus on reading, sharing stories and growing our minds and that’s what motivated our team to add this beautiful addition to our local Glebe community. Like any community project, we couldn’t have done it with... out the guidance, support and creativity of our Elders and community. This incredible design was created by our local Glebe community member and artist, Aunty Kathy Dodd Farrawell, proud Kaanju-Birri woman. In painting the design Aunty Kathy used all the colours of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The design weaves around the back and sides with circles that represent our many diverse communities who are all connected through knowledge and culture. On the front, peering out from the book library she painted Gloria Lynette, a previous Tranby student from the 1990s who still lives locally around Glebe. We are so grateful for Aunty Kathy for painting us this beautiful piece which Tranby can hang proud for all our beautiful community and visitors to enjoy, connect with and learn from.
