22.01.2022 PIECES OF ME I usually try to write a post every two weeks or so and as I sit down to write this Im not entirely sure where I going. Like many things it will have a beginning, middle and end but in the process of moving forward to some desired objective Im not entirely sure how Im going to get there and certainly no idea what I will say. There is a part of me thats says put it aside until inspiration strikes while another part says just persist and youll soon know what t...Continue reading

19.01.2022 A NEW YEAR, A NEW YOU? Searching the internet, with regards to New Year resolutions and their success rates, a study from the University of Scranton, USA is often quoted which suggests that only 8% succeed. This of course means a staggering 92% will FAIL!!!! When people make New Year resolutions they of course are not expecting to fail, so what happens?... I dont presume for a minute to know every reason why someone encounters difficulties, but I believe I can make some good guesstimations for some of them. How realistic were their expectations? They may have started with good intentions but perhaps their timeframe for achieving change was simply unrealistic. Not achieving the results they desire quickly enough they became despondent and eventually gave up. How committed were they to achieving their goals? January 1 is looming fast and a New Year offers new possibilities, but how much planning has gone into their decision to make a change in their life? Often very little time is spent in the planning phase considering the steps required to make it happen. A vague sense of direction is not a good barometer for change. Without a true sense of purpose, an idea of where they are heading and how long it may take to reach their goal, many people with struggle. So what are the things people most want to change? According to a recent ComRes poll, the most common New Years resolutions include: 1. Exercise more (38 per cent) 2. Lose weight (33 per cent) 3. Eat more healthily (32 per cent) 4. Take a more active approach to health (15 per cent) = 5. Learn new skill or hobby (15 per cent) = 6. Spend more time on personal wellbeing (12 per cent) = 7. Spend more time with family and friends (12 per cent) = 8. Drink less alcohol (12 per cent) = 9. Stop smoking (9 per cent) 10. Other (1 per cent) So if the odds are stacked against a person achieving a New Year resolution what can be done to change this? My advice is simple: DONT MAKE ONE!!! If anything, I would use the entire year to make plans and determine what steps are required to achieve the results you want; celebrate the successes along the way as they occur, no matter how minor they may be, and use the coming New Year to look back and reflect and celebrate on what you have managed to achieve. And if still hitting roadblocks or encountering setbacks along the way to achieving your goals, Hypnotherapy or Resource Therapy might just be the answer you are looking for. Happy New Year to all. May 2018 be a year of good fortune, continued growth and success.

18.01.2022 MOTIVATION We all have reasons for the things we do, as well as reasons for the things we dont. Some we are consciously aware of, and more often than not, many invariably exist on some subconscious level. As a Hypnotherapist and Resource Therapist, when meeting a client for the first time, the question I like to pose is: What are you ready to change?... As a client ponders this question and I await their answer, it is absolutely clear something powerful has brought them here to see me, motivating them to seek change. If I may, I have a very brief story to tell to help illustrate this. My father was a very heavy smoker. He started smoking when he was in his early teens. Nothing would make him stop. The cost. The potential health risks. Its impact upon his family. Nothing. Then when he was in his early 40s he had a serious accident. One lung was badly injured. He nearly died; but from that moment on he never smoked again. I am not for a minute suggesting that people need near death experiences to want to seek change in their life. For many though, they find themselves at the crossroads, something presents itself and a person says I want my life to be different. This decision could be borne out of sadness, desperation or they are just sick and tired of passively accepting the status quo. Whatever it is the person is wanting to change the direction their life is heading. So as you read this, I will ask you to consider, What are you ready to change?

09.01.2022 A MANS LIFE Recently I visited the Movember website (https://au.movember.com/) and it was quite confronting reading the statistics presented there relating to mens health. Although Hypnotherapy or Resource Therapy does not claim to be a treatment for everything, utilising these therapies can prove effective and certainly is far better than doing nothing.... Speaking of nothing, and I speak anecdotally, men often do not seek help or treatment for the things in life that ail them whether that exists physically or mentally. Many reasons can be put forward that may help explain this, but the one fact that is abundantly clear is: THIS MUST CHANGE. Men need to step up and take better care of themselves. They need to be more willing to seek help and begin to talk about their feelings rather than try to keep them contained. A number of years ago I used to regularly attend a mens peer support group Dads in Distress (www.dadsindistress.asn.au/). Although the exact reasons for men being there were all different the main thing was they all got the chance to talk. Often the subjects were raw, extremely emotional, many stories heartbreaking but at least they had the opportunity, if they wanted to, to speak free from judgement. And importantly the point that needs to be made and shouldnt be undervalued is they felt they had been listened to. I firmly believe such sharing was therapeutically extremely beneficial. For many you could see a weight lifted as they expressed themselves. Many things in their lives were out of their direct control but at least they could unburden themselves of some of the emotional baggage they had been carting about. There should be more of this. Perhaps if men felt more comfortable, more willing to talk openly about feelings and emotions the rates of depression and suicide would decrease. If there are any men reading this who are struggling in aspects of their life, I urge them to contact me so I can discuss how Hypnotherapy or Resource Therapy may be able to assist them. Taking that first step may prove hard, but you owe it to yourself to move in that direction. One quote I am particularly fond off is by the Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

09.01.2022 IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES, IT WAS THE WORST OF TIMES December is often a busy time. The school year is almost over. Christmas and New Year is fast approaching. Many young people (and also many mature age students) will get their VCE results this month and be ecstatic contemplating the courses and universities they would like to attend.... While for many others they will be bitterly disappointed by their marks and feel doors have been closely (slammed is perhaps a more apt description) and believe they have no future. Also at his time of year, many in society will be looking forward to spending time with family and friends at Christmas and the New Year and the festivities this entails. While for others it will a sad and depressing time. They will have no reason to be cheerful or feel the desire to celebrate. This time of year is not one of enjoyment but one of pain which they have to somehow endure. Often this may mean finding ways to distract themselves so they can cope this could include such things as alcohol, drugs or gambling. For many this is the only strategy they have to deal with the pain, the sadness, the hurt, the anguish that is within. So when considering the people who are doing it tough, where life is almost a burden rather than a gift many will ask what can Hypnotherapy or Resource Therapy do for me? For the student it might be finding the resources to handle disappointment. To regroup, refocus and make constructive plans for the future. Perhaps it can also be used to help them address some of the issues that may have affected their learning poor study habits, stress, anxiety. And for those who carry immense pain, Hypnotherapy and Resource Therapy can be used to uncover the initial trauma and assist that part of the person to find the means to heal. These therapies can also be utilised to target that coping behaviour the drinking, the drug taking, the gambling for instance so a person can find release and begin the process of moving forward with their lives. So if you are ready for change, to embrace a happier, fulfilling future, I look forward to being able to assist you on this journey. Let 2018 be the start of something great.

09.01.2022 THE FOREST Recently, a client came to see me and started to tell me about his job and how stressed he was feeling. He was feeling quite overwhelmed. It certainly wasnt a job he was passionate about but it provided him with enough money to have a good quality of life a comfortable home, an expensive car, overseas holidays every year, nice possessions but he wasnt happy. Outwardly, to others, he was a success but within he was feeling miserable.... He knew he had to make some changes in his life but he was finding it difficult to think clearly. In many ways he felt paralysed, stuck with no way forward. All the while his levels of stress were increasing and increasing. Many people can perhaps identify with this. That feeling of being on a treadmill. Certainly there is the feeling of movement but there is no sense they are on the path to something worthwhile. Often there is a lack of purpose; a feeling of hopelessness where any desirable goals are often unobtainable. Likely, for many, it is often not possible to even formulate any goals. Deep down my client knew what he needed to do, but he lacked a quiet space internally to focus clearly on the future he wanted for himself and family. Utilising some mindfulness exercises, Hypnotherapy and Resource Therapy I was able to assist him find a place that offered some respite from the daily grind and from within this space he was able to define more clearly the direction he wanted his life to take. As a therapist I dont have a magic wand that will suddenly make everything alright, but as a therapist my job is to get a person to look past the trees to discover the forest beyond. As you read this I would ask you to consider, what forest do you need help seeing?

03.01.2022 MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU Not wanting to offend anyone who is not a fan of Star Wars but the latest instalment has just been released, which got me thinking about the Force which plays such an important role in these movies. In the first Star Wars (Episode IV), the Force was described as an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us.... When considering out own lives what forces exist that have the ability to impact upon us? It could be at work, with friends or in intimate relationships. Often within these fields the energy is good and impacts positively upon us it can influence in a healthy way how we interact in the world and how we perceive ourselves. Yet, what if these forces are negative? How would this affect us? For some this may cause stress, anxiety, confusion, depression or feel a complete sense of hopelessness perhaps. But its not as simple as this. It is not just the outside forces that can create problems, there are also the forces within that can create havoc. Issues from the past could remain dormant and yet still dramatically influence how a person sees, behaves and operates in the world. Memories, feelings linked to experiences play their part and contribute to how a person behaves and tries to make sense of their life. Perhaps with others they have no idea why things exist as they do. They yearn for a chance to obtain a better life and want change, but the path forward is uncertain, scary or completely hidden from view and thus they remain stuck. So, if we concentrate on these negative forces, within and without, how can they be addressed and overcome or reduced? I see my role as a therapist as more akin to that of a guide. I assist people to make connections, to draw forth insights, to help bring together the pieces of a puzzle so as to affect positive change. So as I draw this post to a close, I would ask you to consider this what force do you want apart of your life, what energy field do you want to surround you? You may not believe it but you do have a choice.
