17.01.2022 Educationalist Sir Ken Robinson has outlined some of the challenges facing education in the 21st century. Below is a summary of a talk he gave at the RSA in 2010 about the US education system: People are reforming public education for two reasons: Educational reasons - how do we educate our children to participate in the 21st century economy when we can’t predict what it will be like?... Cultural reasons - how do we educate our children so they have a cultural identity while being part of the global community? Robinson advocates change and warns against policymakers trying to meet the future by doing what they did in the past. He says young people are becoming disillusioned with education because of the lack of guaranteed jobs at the end of it. Of course educational standards should be raised, but Robinson sees two problems with the current US educational system: The way they view intelligence. This view is that deductive reasoning and a knowledge of the classics is seen as academic ability. The result is that many brilliant people think they’re not. The way they try to standardise. Robinson notes that the current education system was designed for a different age - the industrial age. #internationaleducation #highereducation #education #educationreform #educationsystem
