15.01.2022 One of our beautiful people gifted us this very special carving this is Taniwha he is very happy in our new space The Taniwha is a Mythical Maori creature that lives in watery areas like rivers and lakes. In some traditions, they were feared as monsters, but in the main, they were the guardians of the area Kaitiaki where the Taniwha was respected and revered whilst it protected the local tribes (Iwi) from harm and evil spirits. There are plenty of legends where the Iwi was saved from impending war as rival warriors approached them via the river and the Taniwha swept them away to their deaths thus saving the Iwi. Maori would often create Carvings of their Taniwha and place them at entrance ways to protect them and their families from Evil. #art #maori #woodcarving #taniwha #kiwi #newzealand #transitionalsupport

09.01.2022 Resilience is the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life." - Andrew Fuller Even when hardships and adversity rise, it is as if the person has an elasticised rope around them that helps them to rebound when things get low, & help them to maintain their sense of who they are as a person.

08.01.2022 Our philosophy at Transitional Support is that throughout life people undergo periods of change, as well as stressors and challenges. These reactions to change are not a reflection of a lack of coping mechanisms; instead, it is an indication of a blockage in our coping strategies and gives us an opportunity personal growth and development. We assist clients in understanding their situation and equip them with a toolbox of strategies that can manage the outcome, as well as their expectations. Our Team works from a philosophy of understanding a persons transitional stages through life and that their reactions to these transitions.

07.01.2022 So often I race through life and dont stop to breathe let alone celebrate the milestones and achievements our small business has been winning. So busy thinking we are supporting our clients, but in fact, it is through their support we have kicked some big goals. Celebrating our achievements is so essential. This month sees Transitional Support being shortlisted for the Telstra Small Business Awards. As well as being contacted to work with an ABC journalist on some fascinati...ng upcoming articles. We have also partnered up with the Addictive World to create a collaborative, supportive Counselling Chapter Network Group in the Logan and Redlands area (first meeting 22 May 2018). So here is a snippet of our first 2-minute video for our nomination. I cant wait to see what comes next and the advancements to Imojens and my acting careers, you may see us in Hollywood soon https://youtu.be/yuHTXtlcK7I

06.01.2022 Another brilliant article by Kyle MacDonald 668. That is the provisional number of people who died by suicide in the last 12 months, ending June 2018, annou...nced last Friday. Last week we also saw a very understandable and heartfelt outpouring of grief in response to the death of broadcaster Greg Boyed, but without wanting to minimise his death, that number of 668 means that every 13 hours on average in New Zealand another family, whanau, community, workplace, school or sports club is quietly being impacted with that kind of grief. Every 13 hours. Its natural to point the finger. To want to look for THE answer, the silver bullet that will fix this. But the uncomfortable truth is we are all responsible. Every single one of us. Thats not to say were to blame. But we are all responsible for the communities, the culture, the environments and the policies, big and small, that fail to help so many people, and more and more, year on year. Even ultimately well-meaning actions can cause harm. It can be easy, in the wake of the events of last week to feel that people contemplating suicide just need to understand the impact their death will have on those close to them. In fact, a number of pieces were written that said more or less that. And they were well meaning, beautifully written pieces. But heres why, if you intend to talk to someone youre worried about, from this point of view, it wont help, in fact it risks making things worse. People who have reached the point where they are considering ending their own lives are convinced EVERYONE would be better off without them. Their friends, their family, even their partners and children. Ultimately, they often believe they are doing those close to them a favour. The feelings are so intense that reason cant get through. The best case is they may think youre trying to help. Worst case: they may think you dont get it, and stop talking. Its also true that its a guilt trip. The person who is on the brink is already crippled by guilt and shame, and lumping even a small amount more on top wont help: it may in fact cause harm. Ive talked a lot in my columns about validation, and the unintended harm invalidation can do. Shouting you are loved at people who dont feel that way, means we fail to listen to how they actually feel. You cant force people to feel loved. But to risk truly validating, to risk daring to try and understand why someone may wish to die is terrifying - and its never been more necessary, at an individual and a national level. We cant just talk about love and caring for each other. We have to enact it: support, listen and accept our loved ones point of view, even if that means tolerating listening to them talking about their wish to die. Stay close. Walk by them. And give them every support they need. And as a country we need to turn every resource over to understanding this problem. Because we cant just keep counting the bodies and wringing our hands. We need to be asking of every policy, national and local, of every action, does this cause harm? Does this help us, or hinder us from looking after each other? Does this cause suffering, or does it increase the hope of those who are struggling? Because if you accept that were all responsible, its also true that we are all the solution. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm

01.01.2022 Once again feeling privileged to be presenting one of my favourite topics on Burnout A Dirty Word Why? to the members of the Queensland Independent Education Union. Why do people not talk about it? Who is Impacted by Burnout? Burnout impacts anyone it is very common it affects around 27% of the Australia population. Burnout is a global issue and high in all countries. In fact, burnout statistics are inaccurate as many people feel ashamed to seek support in this area. Burnout is particularly high for students, athletes, professionals, teachers, counsellors, mental health workers, health workers, emergency and correctional officers, shift workers, etc. People in helping professions are at higher risk of burnout which can lead to compassion fatigue and vice versa.
