Participants with hypertension showed short-term reductions in blood pressure after guided slow-breathing exercises, effects that seem to go above and beyond the benefits of mindfulness without active breath control. A recent review of the relevant scientific literature found that slow, deep breathing can help alleviate the symptoms of depression and anxiety, and it also appears to help relieve insomnia. A study by Hassan Jafari a...t Kings College London, meanwhile, has shown that deep breathing can improve peoples management of pain. Given these benefits, some scientists have suggested that breathing techniques could even help patients cope with chronic conditions like arthritis. 16.01.2022 I watched this panel discussion with John Cleese last year, while severely jet-lagged in a run-down AirBnB in Los Angeles. It was so interesting to learn about the research into near-death experiences. I was also interested by the mindfulness academic on the panel, who commenced research in this area after reports of spiritual/religious experiences by her mindfulness clients (one of my criticisms of mindfulness practices). If youve got a spare 90 minutes, then I recommend checking this video out. John Cleeses journey with after-death is fascinating.

And thats why reconsidering how we label anxiety, depression or ADHD is important. Does someone have depression, a medical disorder of their brain, or are they having a depressed adaptive response to adversity? 11.01.2022 Such an interesting read into the history and evolution of mental health support in the United States since the 1950s. Mental health has shifted from a residential "asylum" model (of its time and deeply flawed), to the existing capitalism model of an inadequately funded health care system supported by the pharmaceutical interventions. People today are given a bag full of pills and are expected to manage their mental health from home. Many fail, and end up in the streets, in prison or taking their life.

In May 2020, Google Trends reported that searches for "breathwork" and "breathing" have increased 326% since 2018. Renowned author James Nestor also published a book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, which details how the manipulation and optimization of breath can change ones life drastically. Celebrities such as Oprah, Joe Rogan, Camila Cabello and Gwyneth Paltrow, moreover, have expressed their utilization of breathwork in their lives.

It is free, it can be done anywhere and the effects are instant. Breathwork is brilliant for bringing us into the present moment, says Hartley. We spend a lot of time mentally elsewhere, and the breath can never be in the past or future. If we focus on our breath, were pulled back to the present moment so theres no overworrying or overthinking. We can just be in the here and now.

03.01.2022 The findings of this research do not surprise me. Weve sought to medicalise these practices, as a means to manage anxiety and depression. However, meditation/mindfulness (and breathwork) were created as a tool to witness emotional experiences, but also enhance our awareness of consciousness through our breath and body. The expansion of our awareness enables us to understand the underlying energies that pull us out of being present such as trauma, which is an energetic echo... of a past experience. These practices can heighten this energy and allow for its release. They can also take our conscious awareness outside of our known reality, which may challenge our understanding of self and reality. This is why meditation has traditionally been taught with the support of a community and a teacher. Supported by people who have walked the path and who can provide insights based on their own experiences. These tools have been developed over centuries, by thousands and thousands of generations of inner world explorers. They are to be respected.

To say it was the most difficult physical and mental experience of my life is an understatement, but it became one of the most rewarding. Ive done a couple of more since, and each time gain further insights. Its such a wonderful practice, and Im so grateful for Goenka for bringing back the Buddhas meditation practice to the world.
