24.01.2022 Postnatal Depression and Anxiety Week (PNDA), since its inception, has been an increasingly important event to ensure more attention and support is provided to people going through these experiences. Amongst the coronavirus pandemic, the rates of perinatal anxiety and depression have climbed and help for people struggling, is in more demand. A program created with thanks to WorkSafe’s WorkWell Mental Health Improvement Fund the Perinatal Workplace Wellbeing Project (PWWP) has allowed us to provide increased support to more working parents and to therefore improve the mental health of more Australians at work. You can read more about PWWP, or enquire here https://pwwp.org.au/resource/newsletters/

21.01.2022 This month we’ve been participating in Steptember because supporting the health and wellbeing of our own team members is so very important, all while raising awareness and funding for cerebral palsy. Such a great initiative to bring your team together, even while working apart. We’re so proud of our team and the efforts they have achieved so far this month. As work-life wellbeing experts, our focus is always on what we can do to better the lives of our clients and our team. ...We encourage all of you to keep an eye out for upcoming initiatives you can do together, or get creative and create your own. https://www.steptember.org.au/

20.01.2022 Today we're celebrating Transitioning Well's 10th anniversary! Our business story is one that most people don’t know about. We were introduced 10 years ago by a mutual colleague. We decided to meet for coffee. My third child was one at the time and Sarah was pregnant with her second baby. As two workplace psychologists, we got talking about the fact there was not enough support in workplaces for working parents. She said, 'Let’s start a business,' and I said, 'Yes, I’ll do th...at with you!' From essentially a blind date the rest is history! We have been extremely fortunate in that our skills are complementary but very different. The biggest lessons I have learned are: 1. You need to share the same values as your business partner from day one - we got lucky that this is one thing we're completely aligned on. 2. Small business means you wear all hats every day switching from finance to HR to Coach and more! Navigating this is extremely challenging and makes switching off that much harder. 3. Backing oneself is so important. You have to take risks but knowing that you will likely fail and will need a plan B! 4. Not all business is worth chasing- if people don’t share your values and vision they are not worth working with. 5. As you grow your team members will become your most valuable asset - never underestimate how you look after them!

19.01.2022 If you can, just put your hand up; talk to a friend or a family member. But if you can’t do that or you don’t want to do that, go and see your doctor and be brutally honest with them about how you’re feeling. It ain’t weak to speak. We commend MasterChef's Brent Draper on his decision to prioritise his mental health and wellbeing by choosing to leave the show. As a new father, his words and actions have helped reduce the stigma of asking for help when we may not be coping or feel overwhelmed. This week is Men's Health Week, and it highlights how the conversation around fatherhood and supporting new parents is an important and essential one.

18.01.2022 Thank you to all those who tuned in to our Flexible Working Day event ‘Flexibility Across the Lifespan' this afternoon. A huge thank you to our fantastic panellists, Suzanne Robertson, Lisa Aitken, Doug Nyman and moderator Georgie Chapman! Some key takeaways from the panel were: 1. Start team meetings with your people first - it allows you to show true care and clear communication. The role that leaders play is so important at this time, and starting from a point of over-co...mmunication isn't a bad thing. 2. Maintaining culture whilst working remotely requires creativity and innovation. For example, at SEEK they did a Conseeki tour to break up the monotony of lockdown. 3. Even where flexibility is more difficult such as in the public transport industry - you can strive for the best solutions, which take an interactive and individual approach - the flexibility is in the planning. 4. The importance of flexibility through COVID and all life stages and its impact on work-life wellbeing can be a protective force as we navigate the ongoing work-life demands and challenges. 5. Wellbeing is key - having a solid wellbeing approach before COVID has helped organisations to pivot. Monitoring mental health is an ongoing process, and some ways to do this include having a buddy system along with resources on how to maintain a connection between team members and their leaders. 6. Having meeting rooms already set up for flexible working such as with video conferencing or hot-desking makes people more agile, and the switch easier while we continue to work from both the home and the office. 7. Changing things like weekly drinks to days where people are back in the office can help with inclusivity and builds culture. 8. Encouraging leaders to articulate flexibility and document it drives a flexible culture. 9. Whilst you may want to come from a point of equity and precedence - in some industries this is limited and you have to be functional and see the opportunities when they arise - taking a case by case viewpoint can help this. 10. Finally, it is about the importance of ‘being flexible with flexibility' as we continue to build flexible work for the future! As organisations continue to develop new ways of working and navigate flexibility, it has become increasingly important that they support their team through the challenges and opportunities that come with change. 17.01.2022 The world has lost a phenomenal, game-changing woman Ruth Bader Ginsburg, on Friday. A true trailblazer for all women, but also knowing when and how to ensure men were given kudos too. One of our founders, Justine Alter shared this over the weekend: "Women will have achieved true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.... Ruth Bader Ginsburg, you have been an inspiration to so many. We will continue your fight and support for women in workplaces everywhere. Thank you for your legacy. You will be missed. https://www.insider.com/ruth-bader-ginsburgs-memorable-quot

14.01.2022 Director, Justine Alter, recently shared her opinions with SmartCompany, on how business owners can keep investing in their companies, taking risks and moving forward, when they don’t know what is around the corner. Being prepared from the outset for unexpected situations can help. Nothing is ever certain, so creating contingency plans, thinking of the what-if’s and being prepared for transitions has never been more important. 14.01.2022 Today marks both R U OK Day and World Suicide Prevention Day. In recognition, we’re highlighting the importance of implementing mental health practices in the work-place. Never before has the conversation around mental health been as important with the COVID-19 ‘new way of working’ creating numerous challenges causing significant emotional difficulties for many. Whilst much of this has created healthy conversation around flexibility and the redefining of roles & caring respo...nsibilities for employees, there are many elephants in the ‘virtual’ room including the following: Conflict between work and family: the line between work & home is more unclear than ever before, with many individuals transforming their home, which is usually reserved for relaxation, into a workspace. Workload and over-working: having our work close by at home, enabled by the extensive use of technology, blurs the boundaries between work and home life. This can lead us to feel ‘always on’ & experience difficulties ‘switching off’. Loneliness: people are social beings, we crave human interaction & social connection. Friendships, emotional support and intellectually engaging with others is limited due to remote working. This RUOk Day there is definitely more to say than RUOk- use these four steps & have a conversation that could change a life: Ask R U Ok, Listen, Encourage Action and Check in. There are many resources at https://www.ruok.org.au and the Australian Psychological Society: https://www.psychology.org.au//APS-IS-COVID-19-Managing-ha

14.01.2022 COVID-19 continues to present challenges to working parents. We are inviting Australian fathers to participate in a survey https://lnkd.in/gj8rARm to help better understand what working fathers are facing and the best ways to support them, since the onset of COVID-19. If you know someone who might be interested please share this with them. It should take no more than 7-10 minutes. We have 3 vouchers valued at $100 up for grabs, as we would love to see as many Australian work...ing dads as possible, share their experiences with us. This is a second phase to some initial in-depth interviews carried out with Australian dads, which, off the back of those findings, led us to undertake in this wider research alongside Di Marzio Research. The survey is open to all working Australian fathers, with children of any age. As work-life wellbeing experts, we noted the limited insights into how working fathers are coping, in comparison to working mothers - that perhaps not enough consideration has been provided to how Aussie dads are doing through this changing time. Early findings indicate an increase in anxiety for some fathers, who are struggling to effectively manage daily responsibilities including home learning, childcare responsibilities, paid work commitments and more; perhaps we need to rethink and redefine work and life for working fathers through this time and establish more support systems.

13.01.2022 This week, we are marking the occasion of PNDA - Postnatal Depression and Anxiety Week. Giving this topic enough attention and support, especially within the workplace, is something we strive to do at Transitioning Well. On this, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank WorkSafe’s WorkWell Mental Health Improvement Fund for recognising how important the workplace is during the perinatal period a time traditionally seen as an individual’s responsibility. We are excited abo...ut the ongoing impact that the Perinatal Workplace Wellbeing Project (PWWP) is having in supporting Victorian workplaces as they support their working parents, particularly at this time. 10.01.2022 We are delighted to share The Hon Greg Hunt MP, Minister for Health and Aged Care has announced $1.36 million to fund Transitioning Well to develop and deliver digital resources to assist owners/operators of small businesses to support the mental health and wellbeing of employees who are new parents or are expecting a baby. This will directly help the 1 in 5 new mothers and 1 in 10 new fathers who suffer from postnatal depression and anxiety. The data shows that perinatal de...pression and anxiety costs an estimated $640 million every year through absenteeism, lost productivity, turnover and time off to care for family members. We thank the government for recognising how important it is to support small business who without this funding, do not have access to programs such as the Perinatal Workplace Wellbeing Program (PWWP). We congratulate our program partners COPE: Centre of Perinatal Excellence, Pracademia and the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA), and fellow recipients of this grant Karitane, The University of Newcastle, Australia, COPE: Centre of Perinatal Excellence, Possums & Co. The Parent Wellbeing & Baby Development Collective, Western Sydney University; Gidget Foundation and Murdoch University for their innovative projects that address the gaps in perinatal mental health service delivery, education and training nationally. 09.01.2022 The importance of women role models is repeatedly highlighted in the work that we do to support work-life wellbeing. Women cannot succeed in work and life unless they see other women succeeding before them. You can’t be what you can’t seeResearch shows that without female role models, girls stop believing they can be anything they want to be as early as 5 years old. Women like Harris help combat that. We talk a lot about these women trailblazers, like Kamala Harris who are the historic first, but they're also paving the way for pulling other girls and women up with them, Parikh says. https://www.forbes.com//kamala-harris-makes-history-what/

04.01.2022 Let’s celebrate age-diversity today, the International Day of Older Persons. Older people bring maturity, insight and wisdom to our workplaces and our lives. With more life experience under their belt, taking time to listen to their stories can protect their mental health and ours.

04.01.2022 Did you know that we continue to accumulate knowledge with crystalised intelligence peaking in our 60’s to 70’s? Older workers are often recruited for their vast knowledge and experience, but research has also demonstrated many other benefits to hiring older workers including: - Positive attitude - High motivation - Good attendance - Wisdom and intuition... An age-inclusive workforce has the potential to positively impact capacity, reputation and performance. Opportunities include: - Positive organisational culture - Social maturity and interpersonal skills - Institutional knowledge and perspective - Improved organisational diversity - Connection with ageing customers To find out more about the opportunities of an ageing workforce, visit https://awrproject.com.au/ AWR is an innovative collaboration between Australia’s largest super fund AustralianSuper and leaders in work-life transition support, Transitioning Well supported by WorkSafe Victoria’s WorkWell Mental Health Improvement Fund.

02.01.2022 In the latest AWR update, we share our insights from the analysis of Maturity of Practice data from our industry partner employees, managers and senior leaders. Plus there’s a snapshot of the project progress and a reflection on the impact of COVID-19 on the ageing workforce. We believe there are many reasons why older workers are good for business; not least the maturity, insight and wisdom they can bring to the workforce. Just as there are benefits from diversity in gende...r and culture amongst employees, there are also benefits from age diversity, and a global pandemic does not change this fact. 02.01.2022 One in five Australians aged 55 years or over claim age is a major barrier to finding or getting hours of paid work . This age group is also the fastest growing segment of the workforce and will remain so for the foreseeable future. People of all ages benefit from access to meaningful work in a supportive environment where they can use their skills and knowledge. As we get older, what constitutes ‘good work’ does start to look a little bit different, and employers need to con...sider the real changes that impact people as they age. This means separating the myths from the facts, and using evidence-based practice to create an age-inclusive organisation. Organisations that actively seek to engage their older workers, will be better positioned for the future of work. To find out about supporting an ageing workforce, visit here: www.awrproject.com.au AWR is an innovative collaboration between Australia’s largest super fund AustralianSuper and leaders in work-life transition support, Transitioning well supported by WorkSafe Victoria’s WorkWell Mental Health Improvement Fund.

01.01.2022 Don’t believe the myths! Older people are actually the fastest-growing users of technology. And a recent report stated that over 90% of employees aged over 65 years actively try to develop their capabilities. With constant changes to work, professional development is crucial to keep workers effective and productive whatever their age. Providing opportunities for development reduces the possibility of skill obsolescence and signals the organisation’s commitment to the worker. ...However, attitudes in the workplaces often prevent older workers from accessing fair opportunities for training and development. If an employee doesn’t understand the technology they’re working with, take this as an opportunity to upskill and train. It is important for training to be targeted and to accommodate the unique needs of older workers. For more information about professional development for older workers, visit awrproject.com.au/ AWR is an innovative collaboration between Australia’s largest super fund AustralianSuper and leaders in work-life transition support, Transitioning Well supported by WorkSafe Victoria’s WorkWell Mental Health Improvement Fund.
