25.01.2022 You see, this is what happens when a few days of rain keep the THA crew stuck inside! With an old coal fired steam boiler here, a stationary steam engine there, an early Holden gearbox and a few lengths of steel in loose formation, the ingredients have come together to form the next addition to the THA heritage fleet! Whilst not strictly a heritage item itself, in under a week, a restless Pete has knocked together the foundations of an interesting replica of an important pi...ece of our road transport heritage - can anyone guess what he is building? #savingaussieheritage #transportheritageaus #wetweatherproject #replica #steampower #whatisit #crazybastards

23.01.2022 You couldn't ask for a better day to stumble across a piece of Queensland's Transport Heritage! Looks to us like Pete isn't going to get a lot of work done back on Lady Woodward today. Thankfully, the Mary Valley Rattler only runs weekends, so he's more likely do something constructive tomorrow! #transportheritageaus #savingaussieheritage #Gympie #maryvalleyrattler #ladywoodward #slacker
22.01.2022 *MAN 3291 UPDATE* Dissasembly work on the engine of member Phil Mackay's 1989 MAN SL202 bus has progressed today, with the sump removed and inspection of the underside #2 piston confirming Friday night's roadside diagnosis by our Tame Diesel Mechanic, Pete, to be correct - a failed piston in #2 cylinder, along with associated damage to the cylinder bore and piston rings. The damage (circled in red) is easily visible, with deep scoring of the cylinder liner, and obvious scorin...g all around the piston's perimeter, indicating that this particular piston has 'picked up', a term which refers to a piston which comes into excessive contact with the cylinder wall, generating a large amount of localised heat, causing the breakdown of the aluminium piston and the seizure of the piston in the cylinder. Usually associated with severe engine overheating (visible on an engines temperature gauge), in this case, the failure occured with the engine well within normal operating temperature, suggesting a localised problem with #2 cylinder. Further testing of the fuel injector for #2 will be undertaken, as it is suspected that a faulty injector has been causing overfueling of this cylinder, in turn generating excessive cylinder temperatures, eventually leading to the overheated piston and Friday night's failure. Phil has had a lucky near miss here, as in most cases, when a piston seizes at high engine RPM, the connecting rod and little end bearing will tear out of the bottom of the stuck piston, and very shortly thereafter punch a hole in the side of the engine block, rendering the engine as good as scrap! Thankfully, in this case the repair is relatively simple and straightforward, and with a new cylinder liner, new piston and new piston rings installed, the engine will be back up and running to fight another day. Stay tuned for further updates as the work progresses on 3291! #savingaussieheritage #transportheritageaus #vintagebus #classicbus #moderndayclassic #mansl202 #statetransitauthority #breakdown #shithappens #tamedieselmechanic
21.01.2022 Here is a very worthy cause that our wonderful followers might be interested in! This lovely old timber vessel is ex Stannards ferry "Produce" As many of our maritime followers will know, Stannards Bros were a local legend in tug, workboat and ferry operations on Sydney Harbour. Operating from 1923 through to the 2000's, Stannards were responsible for a great many notable timber, and laterly steel tugs, ferries and work boats that many Sydney siders still remember fondly as ...the hardest working boats of the Harbour. Several Stannards vessel survive, with a number under active preservation. Thankfully, "Produce" can be counted amongst the survivors, despite coming extremely close to being lost in 2018 when she broke her moorings in a storm and ended up beached and flooded. Owner Steve Cleary has done a wonderful job of rescuing, refloating and stabilising "Produce", and now needs our support to progress her restoration! If any of our wonderful (and already proven generous!) followers can spare a few dollars to help Steve ensure this charming vessel remains with us to serve the next generation, click on the gofundme link below. Smooth sailing and fair winds to you all this holiday season!
20.01.2022 Last weekend was one of great success here at Transport Heritage Australia! Betty, our 1979 Bedford YRT coach, was in the shed for some open heart surgery - replacing the crankshaft main bearings and con rod bearings to deal with a low oil pressure problem. Never afraid to get their hands dirty, the THA road transport crew came together once again to give the old girl the care and attention needed, and to learn all about the intricate workings of an engines bottom end. Spec...ific skills were learnt all about pressure lubrication systems, plain bearing construction, measuring oil clearances and correct bearing tensions, amongst many other tips and techniques along the way. Every volunteer present had a turn at dissembling, cleaning, inspecting, identifying, replacing, reinstalling and accurately tensioning a crankshaft or con rod bearing, and THA's Tame Diesel Mechanic, Pete, was extremely impressed by the efforts of all involved! After a successful engine start and test drive, the gang finished off the weekend by giving Betty a tub at the local truck wash, and as a result of everyone's hard work, Betty is back in service and sparking once again, ready for our next Vintage Vehicle Road Trip adventure! A huge thank you to Phil, Mitchell P, Joel and Glenn, who all came together to acheive this great outcome. Happy traveling to all! #savingaussieheritage #transportheritageaus #vintagebus #bedford #mechanic #volunteer #thankyou #roadtrip
20.01.2022 Another successful week aboard the THA Flagship, Lady Woodward, draws to a close. This visit has been very productive, with work in the engine room progressing at great speed! The auxiliary air compressor has been returned to service, the electrical side of number two generator has been stripped ready for rewinding, number 2 auxiliary engine has been recommisioned and tested successfully, and another run up of the main engine with sustained high speed running completed. Dow...n aft in the propeller shaft void, Pete has made a start (and fantastic progress!) on the thankless task of stripping, treating, preping and painting the internal steel surfaces to keep the corrosion at bay in the vulnerable area. All in all, some big wins this week, and with positive information coming through regarding the imminent out of water slipping for the old girl thanks to the wonderful folk at @theyardbrisbane the project is well on track! For now, it's back to work and back to reality for project leader Pete, but stay tuned, the next exciting adventure is surely just around the corner! #savingaussieheritage #transportheritageaus #ladywoodward #theyardbrisbane #sydneyferry #tincanbay #POR15 #rustkiller
20.01.2022 Here are our harbours last grand old Ladies. In the laid back words of musictian Jack Johnson - Sitting, Waiting, Wishing..... THA has been having a short break up in this wonderfully re-emerging industrial city - Newcastle. ... Ladies Northcott and Herron are laid up here, Sitting around, Waiting for a future, Wishing they were still at work ferrying commuters and tourists alike around Sydney's jewel of a harbour. It is fitting, however, that these two old work horses have returned to their place of birth, just a few hundred meters away, to await the next chapter in their colourful lives. Transport Heritage Australia is working towards bringing our own Sydney Harbour legend, the Lady Woodward, back to home waters in 2021 - and we will most certainly be making a well publicised stop over in Newcastle Harbour to pay homage to her birth place, the State Dockyard, and the men that built her. Who knows, if fortune smiles, we may even be able to reunite the Woody with her two sisters for a photo opportunity that is unlikely to ever be recreated. Follow us here, on Facebook and on YouTube for updates! #savingaussieheritage #ladywoodward #sydneyferries #ladynorthcott #ladyherron #newcastleharbour #statedockyardnsw #transportheritageaus #shiprestoration
20.01.2022 How exciting! THA is in the media!! Last week, ABC journalist Michael Black contacted us through our Instagram page to sound us out about doing a feature on our organisation and our founding member, Pete. This morning, the segment was aired on ABC Radio Canberra! Michael tells us that there will be further online content later in the week, but for now here is our segment from this mornings Breakfast Radio Show! ... Many thanks to Michael and the ABC for helping us further our cause
19.01.2022 Work aboard the Lady Woodward continues today, with Pete going after a knocking noise in her Deutz-MWM main engine, which has developed over the course of running up trials in the last week. Join Pete while he swaps out a fuel injector, and does some tests to identify the cause of the noise - which could potentially represent a major engine problem... #transportheritageaus #savingaussieheritage #ladywoodward #sydneyferry

18.01.2022 The Kanangra restoration team at the Sydney Heritage Fleet is making some serious progress with the restoration of their one of a kind Sydney Harbour double ended ferry, Kanangra. Thanks to recent funding, including a WestConnex grant, progress is moving along swiftly! This is definitely one to keep an eye on folks, we at THA predict Kanangra will be gracing our harbour once again in a few short years, and we look forwards to sailing alongside her in our very own Sydney Harbour double ender, Lady Woodward.
17.01.2022 Some clips from the THA outing to Thirlmere last Sunday, thanks to all who attended!
17.01.2022 One of the biggest challenges aboard the Lady Woodward is working out the electrical system. Years of modifications conducted by various owners and to various - ahem - standards, has left an absolute spaghetti jungle of cables on board. The ship has systems in just about every voltage imaginable, with installations running on 12 and 24 volt DC, as well as 110, 240 and 415 volt AC. THA members Glenn and Pete made use of the bleak weather conditions today by working inside the... vessel, tracing cables, identifying circuits, and removing unused wiring. The old girl is already beginning to look tidier, and the boys even managed to get power restored to the wheelhouse for the radio and the radar! That's a win for project "She's a Lady". #savingaussieheritage #transportheritageaus #ladywoodward #vintage #sydneyferries #tincanbay
17.01.2022 Yesterday marked the first official "Calling All Hands" working day on board our 1903 - built steam tugboat, Tugboat Argos. A fantastic time was had by all with a great turn out of 7 volunteers giving up their Sunday for the event. The Argos is now free of all excess timber and rubbish, and ready to have the wheelhouse removed. Maintenance work was also completed on the solar and bilge pumping systems to ensure the vessels ongoing security. I would like to thank all who came... along for making the day such a success. Great weather, great company, and great old boats (and an old bus too!) However, it is with a heavy heart that I have to report that overnight, after the volunteers left, the Argos was once again targeted by theives, with a $400 battery and electrical tools to the value of nearly $700 being stolen from the wheelhouse. The loss of nearly $1100 of equipment is a kick in the guts for a purely non profit organisation, funded only from the back pocket of a couple of our founding members. It is with this in mind that we are putting out to the community a call for help to raise funds via donations to replace the battery and tools taken. If you are able to help, we would be forever greatful, no donation is to small! Please send us a private message here if you can assist. Our goal is to raise the $1100 that has been lost. Smooth sailing and happy travels to all!
17.01.2022 Fingers crossed for the Empire Bay Marina building and wharves!
16.01.2022 The Lady Woodward is a piece of Sydney's pop culture. She worked tirelessly for the best part of 3 decades, ferrying commuters and tourists around Sydney's iconic Harbour, before changing roles and working for another decade as service vessel to a fish farm in South West Tasmania. After retiring from commercial service in 2010, this grand old Lady has sat quietly in a remote Queensland bay on the Fraser Coast - until now. Transport Heritage Australia has taken ownership and b...rought her back to life. The 'Woody is coming home to Sydney to fill her new role as the flagship of the THA Heritage Marine Fleet. She will provide accomodation, education and workshop facilities, and will ensure that Sydney's Waterways remain graced by a Lady - as they have been for the last 100 years - well into the future. Here is our Lady in picture - past, present and future!
16.01.2022 The world of heritage vehicle preservation can be one of great reward. Alas, it can also be one which challenges your skill sets and tests the strength of those who dable in the field. Even THA's relatively young 'modern day classics' are not immune to mechanical mishap, as member Phil Mackay discovered whilst travelling the Hume Hwy last Friday in his ex State Transit Authority 1989 MAN bus, 3291. A loss of power, a stalling engine, and a nasty sounding knock after restart...ing were the fatal cries of an engine in turmoil, with roadside diagnosis by THA's Tame Diesel Mechanic, Pete, indicating a suspected failed piston and ring set in one of the 6 cylinders. Today, great friend of Pete and fellow member of THA, Trai Hilderbrand @7raih came to 3291's rescue in the @aplus_towing_canberra Supertilt tow truck, safely delivering Phil's pride and joy to THA's Queanbeyan workshop. In the coming days, Pete will remove the cylinder head from the suspect cylinder (number 2), and investigate the damage, before ordering parts and putting the old girl back together, ready to roll again. For anyone interested in major engine repair work, stay tuned for progress updates as the work gets under way! #savingaussieheritage #transportheritageaus #classicbus #moderndayclassic #statetransitauthority #enginerepair #aplustowing #thankyou
14.01.2022 Here is one for our ferry loving followers! As you all know, we have our own piece of Sydney Ferry history at THA with the Lady Woodward. However, did you know that there is another, far more historic double ender still afloat, and still in Sydney? Kanangra is a predecessor to the Lady Woodward. At 108 years old, she is the oldest and arguably the most historic double ender still afloat. Kanangra is under active restoration by the Sydney Heritage Fleet. There has recently bee...n some exciting news regarding funding for major restorative works, her future is now even more secure, and there are more anouncements to follow! Here is a post shared by THA member Brett Smith, who is one individual who has worked tirelessly his whole life to further the cause of saving our maritime heritage. I would encourage anyone interested in assisting the Kanangra team to reach out to Brett and the Kanangra team at the Sydney Heritage Fleet. Watch this space! See more

14.01.2022 Whilst THA founding member Pete has been busily working away on the Lady Woodward up north, Head Maritime Fleet Adviser Brett has been out and about on the waterways of the Central coast (with thanks to @central_coast_ferries ) checking on our other classic vessels. Here, Captain Brett visits the Tugboat Argos, and discovers a new trainee crew have manned the helm for the day! 14.01.2022 Whilst 3291 is in the THA Technology Centre (aka - Pete's workshop) for some mechanical attention, we decided to use the time waiting for parts to attend to some worsening rust issues in the MAN's bodywork. The body on this ex Sydney public transport bus was built by Pressed Metal Corporation, largely out of Galvanised steel. The use of Gal was a master stroke by PMC, as it has allowed these vehicles to survive their largely coastal careers in relatively good shape. However... - even Galvanised coatings will eventually succumb to the elements, as can be seen in this series of images. The steel is protected as long as the galvanised coating remains intact. Where the coating is compromised, such as around pop rivet holes or where panel work has been cut and repaired, corrosion will eventually set in - often made worse by the use of aluminium rivets in the steel panels which causes electrolytic corrosion where the two dissimilar metals are in contact. Thankfully, 95% of the corrosion found here is limited to easily replaceable or repairable panel pieces, with the frame almost completely undamaged. It is now a simple matter of cleaning up the exposed frame, sealing with new anti-corrosive paint (POR15), cutting out new panels from sheet galvanised steel, sealing and riveting the panels back in place, and finally giving her a lick of paint to seal, protect and tidy up the repair. So not only will 3291 have a freshly repaired engine when she hits the streets again, she'll have a new frock to brighten up her day as well! Stay tuned for progress reports as work continues on 3291's overhaul. #transportheritageaus #savingaussieheritage #mansl202 #statetransitauthority #classicbus #rustrepair #moderndayclassic #vintagebus #statetransitauthority #sydneybusses #volunteer

11.01.2022 Transport Heritage Australia is as much about it's members as it is about it's vehicles and vessels. Last weekend the heritage vehicle recovery crew were out and about, and embarked on the mission to repatriate THA member Mitchell Peterson's modern day classic bus, the Leyland Lynx with Cummins L10 engine, from its storage facility in Tahmoor back to the THA road operations base in Bankstown, Sydney. As is so often the case in the THA world, we even managed to find a steam ...train to chase down as well! Mitch's 1980's-era Lynx is one of only two of its type in the country, both of which were ordered by the State Transit Authority of NSW as trial vehicles for Sydney's public bus fleet. However, neither of these two vehicles entered service with STA, instead working for various private operators in the state of NSW, before being retired and stored for preservation. Mitchel has grand plans to return the Lynx to its original colour scheme, but first, the old girl is going to get a bit of a mechanical makeover from THA's very own Tame Diesel Mechanic, Pete, to correct some hot headed tendencies that were revealed on the weekends road trip! Thanks as always to the wonderful THA members who are always happy to help in keeping our countries transport history alive, and for the everlasting support and friendship that comes along with them. Keep an eye out for updates on the Lynx's journey back to good health! #savingaussieheritage #leyland #transportheritageaus #moderndayclassic #retrobus #leylandlynx #adventure #roadtrip #pollyputthekettleon #friendship #strengthinnumbers #transportheritagensw #thirlmere
09.01.2022 Another wonderful weekend of productive work, transport heritage adventures, and eye watering laughter has come and gone here at Transport Heritage Australia! THA members Joel, Mitchel, Richard and Phil made fantastic progress remediating and organising our Sydney-based vehicle storage facility, whilst down south Pete strapped the long-suffering Toyota Landcruiser Troopy workhorse "Oliver" to the back of the equally long suffering Leyland Leopard "Trevor" for the haul up the ...Hume to Sydney to join the work party. Sunday afternoon saw a reward for all the hard work in the form of a Vintage Vehicle Road Trip to Thirlmere, where Trevor the Leopard engaged in a suitably sedate 'train chase' with the #transportheritagensw Rail Transport Museum's beautifully restored steam locomotive, 3526, on the return run of the last Thirlmere to Buxton shuttle for the weekend. The THA crew were joined by fellow enthusiasts in their own classic Leyland Tiger bus, for a short convoy down to Tahmoor. All in all, a great weekend with the ever growing band of wonderful people here at Transport Heritage Australia. A MASSIVE thanks to you all for being involved, we can't wait for our next adventure together! #transportheritagensw #transportheritageaus #leyland #leylandleopard #leylandtiger #thirlmere #steamtrain #fun #greatful #savingaussieheritage
08.01.2022 At first glance, THA may appear to be just about heritage transport. Indeed, that is not untrue, however the real story of THA is one of its people. THA can't exist without the volunteer members who tirelessly work together to achieve our long term ambitions. Despite being a relatively young organisation - THA is positively infant at only 18 months - we have already achieved a huge amount together. In doing so, we are forging new friendships, and creating a support group fo...r each other to help us navigate the challenges of life. In each other, we find the strength and courage to face our demons, improve our wellbeing, and strive to be the best humans we can be. So on that human-focused note, I would like to wish fellow founding member Phil Mackay a very happy Birthday, for today Phil turns 21 - er, for the second time Phil's contributions to THA have been many and endless. Without Phil's support and encouragement, founding member Pete would not have been able to pull this little group together. Indeed, without Phil's generosity, we would also be struggling to house some of our ever growing collection of heritage vehicles! So thank you Phil, your contributions have made a huge difference to all of us at THA, and your friendship of the past few years has made a big difference to us all. Have a very happy Birthday mate.
07.01.2022 Well, a last minute decision saw Pete flying back up to Queensland and the Lady Woodward last Friday, getting in by the skin of his teeth before the Covid border restrictions came into force and restricted access once again. Pete assures us that he is only there out of necessity, that the time aboard will be filled with lots of difficult, dirty, arduous work, and is most definitely not - a holiday. However, we're not so sure..... Are our southern states followers as unconvin...ced as we are? C'mon Pete, get back to work would ya! #savingaussieheritage #ladywoodward #Gympie #maryvalleyrattler #slacker
07.01.2022 Folks, most of you known of the state governments plans to retire the last of the traditional Manly Ferries, and replace them with modern, foreign built, high speed catamarans. Please, help us show the powers that be that there are some things more important than their bottom line, and take a moment to sign the petition linked bellow, it will take less than 2 minutes of your time. Thank you.
07.01.2022 Another successful working weekend has come and gone, this time at the Bankstown THA Technology Centre - a.k.a. Phil's place! Fantastic progress was made with works on the AEC Swift, with the rear floor finally cleared of the damaged vinyl ready for re laying, and the 1st stage of treatment of rust in the frame complete. POR15 rust preventative paint has been applied to the currently exposed frame after treatment of the rust by mechanical removal and POR15 Surface Prep solut...ion, and we are now ready to manufacture and install new panels and refit the windows! A great turn out of volunteers this weekend, with many thanks to Phil, Mitch P, Deni, Denis and Gary for getting involved. Keep an eye out for the next stage of bringing the AEC back to life! #savingaussieheritage #transportheritageaus #classicbus #aecswift #rustrepair #volunteer #thankyou #POR15

06.01.2022 Pete and Glenn are finally back in Captains Flat, for the 3rd and final instalment of their mission to drive this 1957 ex - Adelaide AEC Regal IV out of its place of slumber, where the old girl has sat quietly for nearly 20 years. Last week, the boys made an attempt at a temporary repair to a worn spline in the rear differential. Today, we find out if this repair has worked! Will she move? 05.01.2022 The Empire Bay boat shed is facing an uncertain future. As many of our followers would know, our fleet of heritage timber vessels including the 1903 steam tug, Argos, are moored in Empire Bay, in close proximity to this 98 year old structure. The Empire Bay boat shed, slipway and wharfs represent the last remaining examples of what is a huge part of the Central Coast's past, with the waterside suburbs of Brisbane Waters relying heavily on the boat building and opperational industries that once populated the area en mass. Please show your support for this region's important maritime heritage by checking out this page and doing what you can to help!
05.01.2022 It must be Stannard day here at THA today, as here we bring you yet another example of an ex Stannard Bros classic work boat, "Jannali", which has just had stage one of her comprehensive restoration completed by new owner, Alex Lopez. Alex is a passionate, commited and dedicated maritime heritage enthusiast and aerial photographer who, together with his Dad, has stepped in to ensure this classic Sydney Harbour work boat gets the love and care she needs to remain as an importa...nt part of our maritime transport heritage. Having only recently taken ownership, Alex and co have already made significant progress in stabilising the vessel by installing a capable solar and bilge pumping system, conducting repairs to her deck to keep out the rain, and finally by towing Jennali back to home waters - with a little help from another passionate timber boat man, Willis Spearsman - for her first haul-out, clean and paint in years. Jennali is well on her way back to good health, and her future looks bright and secure in the hands of what can only be described as one of our most dedicated enthusiasts. Well done Alex, we look forwards to motoring along with you on the big blue in the near future!
05.01.2022 Many of you with an interest in our Maritime heritage know Mori Flapan. Mori is dedicated to our modern maritime heritage and works tirelessly to play his part in saving and recording whatever we can. Mori's post below raises some very important points, and we wanted to share it here. If you can help save Forceful, please do. Thanks folks!
04.01.2022 Last weekend's "Calling All Hands" weekend was once again a roaring success! The dedicated THA volunteers arrived on Saturday for a weekend of demolishing and cleaning work as they tackled the task of removing the 1990's era wheelhouse - much of which was built of poor quality timber to less than brilliant standards. Despite the copious amounts of dry rot, the poor quality fixings and the liberal use of 'liquid nails' used in the wheelhouse construction, the structure still... put up a good fight, taking the three workers a solid two days to remove approximately 2/3rds of the structure. The weekends work also saw the automated solar power supply and bilge pumping system receive further ongoing maintenance with float switches replaced and repositioning of one of the pumps. The Argos restoration back to steam propulsion is now well on it's way, with the 'Go fund me' fundraiser to replace stolen goods powering ahead thanks to the generous support of the community. We still need to raise around another $400 to reach our target figure, if anyone is able to help with a small donation we would be forever greatful! A link directly to the fundraiser can be found on the post below this one, directly on our wall. Thanks again to our wonderful followers and supporters, and to the volunteer workforce who make these projects possible #transportheritageaus #empirebay #tugboatargos #steampower #woodenboat #timberboat #vintageboat #volunteer #savingaussieheritage #centralcoast
04.01.2022 Every now and then, in the persuit of daily business here at THA, we have the pleasure of taking one of our classic Retro 4x4 fleet into some incredible locations. Yesterday was one of those days. Here, founding member Pete has taken his beloved 1982 Toyota Landcruiser, "Oliver", to the foothills of the Brindabella Mountains, West of Canberra, to undertake some repair work on an ancient International tipper truck which suffered a failure whilst undertaking earthworks on the ...remote property. The operation of this mobile heavy vehicle/diesel/marine mechanical service is the main source of revenue for the projects and adventures of the Transport Heritage Australia group - and also crosses over nicely to the maintenance the needs of our various heritage vehicles and vessels! Keep up the good work Pete, and don't spend tooooo long out there soaking up the sunshine, there's a fleet of old busses and boats back at THA, just waiting for you to get back and pay them some attention! #savingaussieheritage #workingforaliving #inpersuitofheritage #toyota #40serieslandcruiser #hj47 #troopy #hardworkingclassic #retro4x4 #transportheritageaus
