18.01.2022 Trigger warning: domestic abuse, transphobia.
12.01.2022 Laverne Cox (born 1972) was an eight year old kid growing up in Alabama when she was first sent to therapy to try and "fix" her gender expression. But she ...insisted that there was no difference between boys and girls and hoped that puberty would give her a body that reflected her gender in the eyes of society. She was bullied all the way through school and first attempted suicide at 11. In 1993, Laverne moved to New York to study classical ballet and acting at Marymount Manhattan College. At the time, she dreamed of being a "superstar in two, three years tops," and while it would eventually happen, she was just getting started and these things take time. It would be 7 years before Laverne got her first television break as a contestant on the reality show I Want to Work for Diddy where she was a finalist. She was the first Black openly transgender woman to appear in an American reality show, a fact that helped earn the show a GLAAD Media Award. She then went on to become the first Black transgender woman to produce and star in their own tv show with the premier of TRANSform Me in 2010. Three years after that, she landed the role for which she is best known: that of Sophia on Orange is the New Black. The recurring role earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, the first openly transgender actor ever nominated in any acting category. She became the first openly transgender woman to win a Daytime Emmy in 2014 for her documentary Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word. The tv show Doubt on CBS made her the first openly transgender person to play a transgender series regular on broadcast television. She is also the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of Time magazine and to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds. Laverne is a respected activist as well as an actress. She has constantly used her celebrity platform to stand up for the transgender community. For example, it was in large part thanks to her that IMDB changed their policy of not allowing people to remove their birth names from the site. And the recent Supreme Court decision on the rights of LGBTQ workers was also championed by Laverne; she even attended oral arguments. Furthermore, she has been praised for advocacy centering on the rights of sex workers and victims of police brutality. Her career as an activist earned her an honorary doctorate from The New School in 2017. Through it all, she continues to build a legendary entertainment career. Laverne can currently be seen in the documentary film Disclosure, which is available to stream on Netflix. Celebrate Laverne Cox. #Pride #BlackLivesMatter (In an effort to both celebrate Pride and support the Black LGBTQ community, I am sharing the story of one Black LGBTQ icon each day during the month of June.)
