06.01.2022 50 years ago today, a young 15 year old walked into the Bundaberg Rum Distillery to start his working life as an apprentice Cooper. Dave was the last Cooper at the Distillery and his passion in his craft continues today. Starting his own Cooperage in 1982 from humble beginnings in a shed at the rear of his home to become an Award winning tourist attraction. His biggest joy was training 6 of his own apprentices over the years. Don Protheroe, Jamie Glass, Pru Brown (first female Cooper in Aust),Lee Bates, Jason Schmeider (nephew) & Laurie Schmeider (son). Jason & Laurie are still working in the trade today which makes him feel very proud. Moving from his home town of Bundaberg to Tasmania nearly 2 years ago, he and Laurie are continuing the legacy and enjoying the challenge of honing their skills now for the Whisky Industry.
