10.01.2022 When choosing a roof material for your building, you need to carefully consider your colour choice. The colour of your roof can dramatically impact the thermal comfort level inside the building as well as your energy usage to control the internal environment. How does it work?... We all know that when you wear light coloured clothes, you feel cooler than if you were to wear dark colours. This is exactly how the interior of a building feels. Dress it in a light roof, and it will reflect the sun rays away. Dress it in a dark roof, it will absorb those sun rays. What am I looking for? Roofing products will have a solar reflectance index number (SRI) associated with each of the colour options. This can range from 0 - 100. The lower the number, the higher percentage of sun rays your roof will absorb. The higher the number, the higher percentage of sun rays your roof will reflect. So a white roof will be 100, and a black roof would be 0. Can I update my existing roof? Most definitely. There are paints on the market that can be used to lighten the colour of your existing roof while having additional technology in them to improve reflectance of the solar rays. #coolroof #solarreflectance #gooddesign #smartdesign #trapparchitects
