13.01.2022 Do You Know ?! Not knowing your skin type is like buying a pair of shoes without knowing your shoe size (and you’re not allowed to try them on.) You pick the pair that looks like it might fit your foot. It’s a close match from what you can see on the box.... Everyone has been raving about these shoes. You’ve seen the reviews and that influencer swears by them. You take the shoes home and add them to your closet, (alongside aaallll the other shoes you’ve bought in the past.) Some of them fit, some are a little uncomfortable, but you paid good money for them so you intend to wear them for short events even though they rub a little. These new shoes feel ok in the beginning, your little toe is a bit squashed but it’s only a niggle and the shoe might stretch with regular wear. 09.01.2022 SUN Now, let’s talk about sunscreen and the facts: higher numbers don’t always mean better protection. The number rating (15+, 30+, 50+) are linked to your skin’s natural burn time. If your burn time is 10 minutes, an SPF 15 will give you 15 x 10 minutes before you need to reapply. SPF 30 gives you 30 x your burn time. Of course, it’s not an exact science so don’t rely on this calculation for your reapplication. Ensure you reapply after swimming, sweating, working out or... anything else that may have taken off the physical cream. As for the level of UV protection, there is only about a 6% difference in the level of protection between and SPF 15 and an SPF 50. Your burn rate is just part of the equation, though. Other important things to note when you’re considering sunscreen SPF and reapplication include: Your skin: if you have very fair skin and apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30+, you might need to reapply every 45 to 60 minutes. If you have darker skin, however, 30+ might last a little longer before you need to apply more. Your skin’s health: Skin barrier matters; when your pH is correct ,it will contain more trans-urocanic acid, giving the skin natural defence against UVB radiation and will also support antimicrobial properties. Time of the day: the intensity of the sun’s rays depends on the time of day and where the sun is positioned in the sky. Season: you also need to factor in the seasons, as the sun is more intense at different times of the year. Altitude: you’re more likely to be affected by the sun if you’re up higher than down lower. Location: reflected sun causes damage too. Keep an eye out for bright sand and water, which can intensify the effects of the sun. Clouds: while clouds can somewhat reduce the effect of the sun’s rays, you will still suffer skin damage if it’s cloudy and you’re unprotected. UV index: the UV index depends on what’s happening on that particular day.
