25.01.2022 While a 'Blue Lane' allowing yachts to enter Australia makes some sense, it's hard to see it happening with Australia's current restrictions on inbound and outbound travel. https://www.islandsbusiness.com//2900-yachtie-calls-on-aus

23.01.2022 The sun came out, the rain came down but the sunflowers kept on smiling. As did I when I saw for myself what Innisfail local Fred James had created on his property on the banks of the North Johnstone River. Over 10 days he and his crew of Vanuatuan workers planted 40,000+ sunflower seeds. Living alone while his wife is in care in Brisbane, in his one-of-a-kind home made from rail carriages trucked down from Cairns, this is the magnificent result of Fred's work 8 weeks later.... "The world is in a dark place at the moment," he says. "My own community is not a real happy town. People are not as outgoing as they once were. I did this to make people smile, to make people feel good, even if it's only for a minute." "The first Sunday I opened up my property to visitors here were 306 cars and over 1,000 people." Fred, I thank you for creating beauty with nothing more than a bunch of seeds, some willing workers, tropical rain and lashings of sunshine. And for tossing in a rainbow for good measure. The sunflower field will last approx one month so if you are in the Innisfail region, make a beeline for Fred's sunflower field on Shaw Rd not far from the Fred Drew free camping area. Don't forget to be polite, respect his work and thank the lovely creator of this little piece of beauty. 21.01.2022 " I’ve been on this far-flung Pacific island for less than 48 hours and am in rather a pickle. The trouble began with a bloody fist fight in the Marianas Yacht Club. Though, truth be known, our problems started a few thousand miles back after dropping the dock lines in Tonga. Now, I find myself an unwitting accomplice to a mutiny. I have jumped ship and am an illegal alien. I am bunkered down in the red light district of Guam in a windowless hotel room, complete with scarlet velour wallpaper and a black marble bathroom. My unlikely co-conspirator is a sun-worshipping Italian sailor I know only as Carlo. We are not in a relationship yet are sharing the only bed in this seedy room...." 18.01.2022 They weren't kidding when they said Mission Beach is where the rainforest meets the Coral Sea. This little piece of paradise is Bingil Bay, a gorgeous cove with a sweep of sandy beach shaded by a coconut palm grove along the foreshore. Bathed in winter sun, we stopped here for lunch and were it not for the 'no camping' signs along with a friendly Park Ranger who popped in to say hi, we could have stayed forever @letsgomotorhomes

12.01.2022 By popular demand.... That iconic swimming pool! Dunk Island Resort''s famed beachfront pool with the Ulysses butterfly etched into it. Visiting Dunk Island recently, a beautiful island off the north Queensland coast, I was disheartened to see that the once beautiful Dunk Island Resort is still looking incredibly sad after Cyclone Yasi ripped through almost ten years ago. Note: Entry to Dunk Island Resort is not permitted without authorisation & this image was captured without entering private property.

11.01.2022 Hitting the road south of Cairns with Lets Go Motorhomes, our first stop is Mission Beach. Putting on all the charm with blue skies, sunshine and even a funky little beach front bar (thanks to serial grey nomad Dan who apparently pulls this little place together every year beneath the palm trees). 09.01.2022 Saltwater has coursed through my veins for as long as I can remember. From childhood holidays immersed in the Indian Ocean on West Australia’s countless beaches to an adulthood spent sailing around the South Pacific, the ocean is so much more than a mere body of water. Born under an astrological water sign (the crab), perhaps it was inevitable that I’d feel most at home in, on or under the sea. https://bit.ly/2BZQ2LE Published in Autumn edition of Vacations & Travel

07.01.2022 Thanks to covid shutting down the travel industry I've found myself with plenty of time on my hands. I've been into running for some time but this year I've taken to long distance running again. The bling collection is piling up, though I've still got one more half marathon to do before I can legitimately claim this trifecta. But while everyone else was running today I was taking pictures of them, so I'll squeeze in a cheeky half marathon in the next week. Thanks to Cairns Dynamic Running for continuing to create events through this pandemic, keeping us safe and sane. Australian Society of Travel Writers

06.01.2022 I've spent the past couple of days checking out the fabulous secret retreat at the southern end of Long Island. Elysian Retreat wears it eco credentials proudly, generating its own power from a solar farm. collecting rainwater & utilising herbs, fruit & vegetables grown in the garden. With capacity for less than 20 guests, it's intimate, friendly and just the kind of place to chill out, unwind and reset the mind. I've even got my own swing from where I can soak up the late afternoon sun, watch the tide come in and view the transition from day to dusk. 03.01.2022 Is there anything sadder than a derelict holiday resort with its guts ripped open for all to see? No, we don't think so either? Once favoured by the rich & famous who were drawn to Dunk Island’s sandy shores shaded by palm trees and an elegant resort with an enviable beachfront position, these days Dunk Island, offshore from Mission Beach in north Queensland, is more popular with campers & boaties. With the former Dunk Island Resort still derelict after Cyclones Larry then ...Yasi ripped through the area almost ten years ago, subsequent ownership tussles have done little to firm up any prospect of Dunk returning to its former glory.
