23.01.2022 What if you were so radioactive that you burned your clothes? That’s what zircon does! The uranium in zircon decays to lead while helium atoms explode out of the mineral. These escaping atoms damage the minerals surround the zircon creating this characteristic halo. These pleochroic halos make minerals like titanite, zircon, and apatite easy to spot in thin sections. My grad student @corailxiw is exploring the mineral relationships between zircon and the other phases in granites and in turn what mineral inclusions are found in the zircon.
20.01.2022 While moving old museum cases, I came across this beauty. #Crocoite is a lead chromate named after the Greek word for saffron (, krokos) given the similarity in color. This mineral is thought to form by the simultaneous oxidation of chromite and decomposition of galena.
20.01.2022 Last decade today I was in the Raft River Mountains looking at some amazing stretched #metaconglomerate. Where were you last decade? The Raft River Shear Zone cuts through Proterozoic quartzite and conglomerate on the margin of a massive core complex. Substantial controversy surrounds the ages of metamorphic and structural events in the core complex in Utah and Idaho. Multiple thermal and deformational events have conspired to produce rocks and metamorphic mineral assemblages... that are not easily amenable to placing tight geochronologic constraints on these events, resulting in many different interpretations of their regional significance. It is exciting to realize how complexities like those in Basin and Range core complexes continue to provide opportunities to explore these intricate geologic processes. None of this is settled, everything is up for debate. See more
17.01.2022 I’m excited to announce a new TG venture: the Geology Podcast Network! We have an amazing team of people working on our first two shows, the Geological Expeditions of Yore and Backyard Geology. Our first episode of GEOY is coming out next week where we will learn about the amazing life and work of Alfred Wegner. Thanks so much to our amazing team: @jannelieb @bryantware @mikaaaday @geo.gill @noellelin22 @corailxiw See the link in the profile and stay tuned for our first episode and the ultimate geology giveaway next week.
16.01.2022 Who are your GEO-hero’s? In the first season of Geological Expeditions of Yore we will explore the life and discoveries of six of my heroes including Alfred Wegener, Marie Tharp, Arthur Holmes, Alice Wilson, and John Tuzo Wilson. Who should we discussion in season 2?
15.01.2022 Crocoite was first recognized in ores from the Berezovsk gold district near Yekaterinburg, Sverdlovskaya Oblast, Central Ural Mountains, Russia. It is an uncommon secondary mineral formed in the oxidized portions of lead deposits contiguous to or hosted in chromium-bearing rocks. It is most commonly seen in iron-manganese gossans developed within 3040 meters of the surface. Don’t eat it. #Crocoite will kill you twice. Once from the hexavalent chromium and again from the lead.
14.01.2022 New Backyard Geology episode is live! https://podcasts.apple.com///backyard-geology/id1539293058
13.01.2022 Here’s a sneak peek of the Geology Podcast Network! New episode coming on Tuesday!
11.01.2022 Zeolites are the class of minerals about which I know the least but the more I learn, the more I am amazed. Zeolites can be use for so many exciting things including water purification, gas separation, heat adsorption, cryosorption, laundry detergent, and blood clotter. I now have a greater appreciation for this group of minerals. I found this sample of stilbite deep in the archives of the Miller Museum @queens_geol.
10.01.2022 A friend once told me that biotite allows one to look rationally at one's environment and any potential issues involved. Biotite creates a vision "seeing" farther than the issue. It allows one to discard insignificant, irrelevant details and provides a clear picture of each issue. They also said that biotite is the "stone of life" and may be used in diagnosing disorders associated with disorganized cellular patterns. Biotite may also be helpful in the treatment of the eye...s, to release and wilt growths, and to regulate the secretion of bile. I wonder if the size of the biotite is proportional to how much bile it can regulate. If so, I’ve probably got all the bile regulation I could ever need. Do I have to eat it now? Now forgive me while I troll all the crystal healers with a billion hashtags... How big is your biotite? I almost tripped over these massive lathes of phlogopite in the Miller Museum archives. Once corona is over, I’m hoping I can find a way to get these beauties on display! @queens_geol #biotite #phlogopite #cristal #crystalhealing #crystals #healingstones #healingcrystals #crystalsofig #chakras #crystalreikihealer #vibratehigher #astrologysigns #zodiacastrology #energyhealing #crystalmagic #crystalwitch #mercuryretrogradeinscorpio #crystalenergy #witchyvibes #chakrahealing #chakrabalancing #crystalreikimaster #crystalreiki #crystalhealer #crystalvibes #geology #minerals #geologia #biotita
10.01.2022 There are many amazing historical figures in the field of geology that deserve our adoration. Many of them have been carved in stone or cast in bronze as a symbol of their long lasting contributions to the field. However, all of the statues I am aware of are white dudes. If any female geologist is deserving of a statue it is Mary Anning. The amazing folks over at @maryanningrocks are petitioning the scientific community to donate money for a statue of #MaryAnning to recognize her tremendous contribution to the fields of geology and paleontology. I can’t think of a better way to highlight the historical contributions of women in science. Side benefit is that such a statue may just inspire some little girls to pursue their dreams. #representationmatters #whatascientistlookslike #womeninscience @mary_annings_revenge
09.01.2022 Fire season is continuing through the autumn in #Utah. Here’s a #DC10 dropping fire retardant near Provo Canyon. #provofire #utahwildfire #wildfire #dc10tanker #firefightingplane #firefighting #McDonnellDouglas #aviationphotography #aviationgeek Video by Russ Franklin.
08.01.2022 Amazing new discovery at @pompeii_parco_archeologico! Two victims of the 79CE eruption of #Vesuvius were recently unearthed showing amazing detail even preserving the facial features and clothing impressions. As #archeologists were excavating this particular room of #volcanic ash, they found voids in the hardened ash. These voids represent the space created as the humans were volcanically cremated. The archeological team filled these voids with a special type of plaster and let it harden before removing the rest of the ash revealing the molds of these unfortunate souls. Based upon the clothing impressions, it is hypothesized these represent a rich man and his slave who were seeking shelter from the falling pumice only to be caught in an ignimbrite cloud. #pompeii #archeology Photos from @pompeii_parco_archeologico
06.01.2022 It’s just another #migmatite Monday. @ Aus, Namibia
06.01.2022 Did you know that frozen butter fractures similar to rock? Twist hackle provides a useful way to see the direction of fracture propagation. At high stress, the fractures twist towards sigma 2 (intermediate stress) as the fracture propagates along sigma 3 (minimum stress).
04.01.2022 From a Triassic ocean to Jurassic sand sea to a Miocene laccolith to Pleistocene gravels. This road cut overlook has a lovely story to tell. Near St George Utah.
01.01.2022 Today is World Nacho Day! To celebrate I made stratigraphic nachos. Thanks to @mattymatheson for the recipe. #geologizeyourfood #worldnachoday
