25.01.2022 Gliding along the Morning Glory

24.01.2022 Sam from Sunrise Helicopters in Mt Surprise, offered to take me for a bit of a spin in his chopper on Friday afternoon. The view of the savannah landscape by a...ir is absolutely breath taking and offers a completely different perspective compared to experiencing it from the Savannahlander and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I tried to add a bit of commentary to the videos as I was filming but I doubt you'll be able to hear because it looks like I have finally found something that is louder than me. Thanks heaps for the trip Sam. If you ever need a train driver to keep you company again during a flight, I'm your man! How many of you would consider a chopper flight around the Mt Surprise area during your visit to the Gulf Savannah? Wil

21.01.2022 Mrs Jo from Bedrock Village has just sent me this pic of Elizabeth Creek, which is the spring fed creek that we cross over first thing on Saturday morning as we... leave Mt Surprise. The Mt Surprise township basically turns into an island during flooding like this with every one unable to drive in or out until the waters subside. Thanks for the pic Mrs Jo and pleased take care! Wil

Well the QR gang has done an outstanding job of rebuilding that bridge. Thanks heaps guys! Without you, we wouldn't be here! Checkout the before and after shots below. Wil

14.01.2022 Last Friday I was invited to stay the night out at the Undara Experience by the General Manager, Kane Bassett. Kane really knew his stuff and went to the nth de...gree to show me a good time. He explained everything from how the tubes were made to the amazing ecology that exists there now. Kane even took me for a walk up a dormant volcano known as 'Racecourse' so that we could stand on the rim and watch the sun set while we listened to 'Great Southern Land'. It was truly one of the most beautiful and uniquely Australian moments I have ever experienced. After that, it was time to return to the lodge, which is mostly made from old refurbished Queensland Rail rollingstock, for a yarn over a few coldies and dinner. I went for the Kangaroo Steak which was delicious! Then an amazing Choc-Lava Dessert followed by some very nice Lava Tawny Port! We then went for a quick spotlight to see what wildlife was out and about. The next morning, Kane had me up nice and early for a Cooked Aussie Bush Breakfast before driving me back in to Mt Surprise to get the Savannahlander back to Cairns. Sir David Attenborough was bang on when he remarked that the Undara Lava Tubes were one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. I can't recommend them enough and I strongly suggest you get out here to the Undara Experience and check it all out for yourself!!! Thanks so much again Kane!! You're a good bloke!! 13.01.2022 One more post before Christmas that has a Christmas theme to it. This is Red Mistletoe(Amyema sanguineum) that grows on the limbs of Eucalypts and some Melaleuc...as. They are parasitic but seeing as how the Mistletoe produces is own carbohydrates via photosynthesis and doesn't steal them from the host tree, it is considered to be more of a half parasite. What I find interesting about Mistletoe is the relationship it has with the Mistletoe Bird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum). Below are 2 pics of the birds. The first being the brightly coloured male, and the second being the female outside her nest.(Full photo credit for the birds goes to my mate, Dominic Funnell. I'm just not quick enough to get an amazing shot like that!) About 85% of the birds diet is Mistletoe fruit. The Mistletoe Bird swallows the fruit whole and it can pass through the bird in as little as 4 minutes. When it comes out, the seed is very sticky and has a tendency to get stuck to the birds bum(We've all been there). The Mistletoe Bird then has to wipe it's bum on the tree branch that it is perched on to get the seed off. So the seed is then deposited on a branch, surrounded in it's own packet of fertilizer, ready to germinate. How cool is that!? I love the Australian Savannah! There is always something to learn! And yes, the train was parked under the Mistletoe so everyone on the train had to get a kiss! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU!!!! Wil

13.01.2022 The Black Orchids(Cymbidium canaliculatum) are in full bloom across the Gulf-Savannah country right now and these pictures are from various specimens that I too...k last week. These epiphytic plants are usually growing high in the trees and can be seen pretty easily from your seat in the Savannahlander. If you're having trouble seeing them and you would like to, just be sure to ask one of us and we'll point them out as we cruise along. Indigenous people used the orchid as a food plant aswell as using the sticky sap as a glue and to make paint. These orchid flowers are exclusively polinated by native stingless bees from the genus, Trigona. They are certainly beautiful and are just one of the many hidden gems that the savannah country has to offer. Wil

11.01.2022 Sunset at Einasleigh last night. Dusk is certainly a magical time across the savannah. Wil
