09.01.2022 This time last year, my family was in Lebanon. It was the first time for our children who were able to see where their grandparents were born, meet new relatives and piece together the root of the culture we weave into their Aussie lives. They also had a hands-on history lesson..seeing the Phoenician ruins, historic towns, effects of modern war, unrivalled mountains and sweet smelling cedars. Another purpose of the trip for me was to make contact with travel suppliers in Leb...anon so that Travel Time could capture a niche market in Australia; of holidaying in Lebanon. A rarity here where its featured no more than a quarter page in any travel brochure. Wholesalers stay clear of the place, sadly understandably. And there is a general lack of knowledge and confidence in the industry. I was warmly welcomed by @citysightseeinglebanon and @nakhalandcie. I updated our website to feature Lebanon and highlight just a drop in the Mediterranean ocean of what Lebanon has to offer; and hoped my firsthand experience, enthusiasm and passion for the country would open the eyes for, in particular, travellers of non-Lebanese background to break through the fear and give Lebanon a go! I was extremely excited last year to have a handful of bookings for non-Lebanese travellers who had Lebanon on a bucket-list or were inspired by social media posts and website; Lebanon became desirable but more importantly doable! I was as proud as a parent! This added to the steady rise in bookings for second-generation Lebanese families taking their kids or young travellers heading to the famous nightlife. Ironically Covid may have saved the lives of thousands of Australian and international tourists this year who would have filled the city. It is our busiest destination year on year and was only gaining momentum. I have been in the industry for 25 years now and have never felt so disheartened for Lebanon. They have been reduced to rubble but I have no doubt they will rise again, that is the spirit and resilience of its people. My passion has always been to challenge the perception and open the doors to a country that deserves to be seen, experienced, felt and tasted. It seems unfair that a country that offers so very much, that rivals the world in its uniqueness, history, culture, food, warmth and beauty needs to fight to be taken seriously by travellers. I know it will take time to rebuild the confidence of Lebanon as a holiday destination and I look forward to the day when it is.
