16.01.2022 Today I took a collectivo bus (small van holding upwards of 16 people) from Oaxaca city over the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca mountain range to Puerto Escondido The drive was nothing short of incredible! Imagine the road to Hana in Maui...only minus the coast. It was 256 kms of non-stop winding roads twisting up and down the mountain range. The 3 lads I was traveling with constantly groaning about how sick they felt and how this was the worst day of their lives. Pfff! 's...!!! We passed thru tiny villages, perched on mountainous peaks. Cows donkeys or goats were often on the road around the bend. Locals would either get on or off the van in these villages and instantly fall asleep. Mothers would sleep with babies on their lap who were mesmerized by my blue eyes and blonde hair. The boys cuddled and tried to sleep to pass the time. Not me! I spent 7 hours with a death grip on the handle above my head just trying to keep my ass in my seat!! Mid journey, the road became less of a road and more of a guessing game as to whether or not the next turn the road would even be there!! Chunks of the road had disappeared into the abyss! One turn even brought us to a make shift toll - presumably by the cartel - where our driver Steve McQueen happily paid the masked bandits who then lowered the wires set up to stop traffic who didn't comply! A Mexican boarded our small bus was holding a 3 foot long machete! Don't worry mom, it was very dull and a bit rusty 8 hours to travel 256 kms and I loved every minute of It! #travellikealocal #collectivo #sierramadredeoaxaca #mountaindriving #mexico #oaxaca #livelifetothefullest #gypsylife #wanderer #mexicolife See more
