19.01.2022 This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. They are the First Nations people who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. But for them, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. They were Australia’s first explorers,... first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Managing the land - the biggest estate on earth to sustainably provide for their future. Theirs is the world’s oldest oral stories. Theirs is the true history of this country. 15.01.2022 Bigger, Better and Reimagined? Tourism Post-Covid Here we are, November 2020. Without the ability to travel, gather and celebrate important milestones together, it’s unbelievable to think the year of 2020 is so rapidly coming to an end. It feels like only yesterday our team was meeting on Waiheke Island New Zealand for our annual retreat celebrating our 2019 milestones together and passionately planning for 2020, ‘let’s make it our best year yet!’ The year started with bus...hfires across many parts of Australia including in our own Head Office community of Jindabyne NSW, flooding in parts of New Zealand, followed by the ongoing challenges presented by the global COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges have been especially difficult for destinations around the world and the tourism industry. The effective shutdown of our international visitor markets across Australia and New Zealand, paired with border closures across states and territories have translated into a dramatic decline in visitor movement and spend, impacting the performance and viability of many tourism enterprises. For many, it’s been difficult to plan for the future ‘where to next?’ We have heard much messaging from federal government, industry bodies and academics in Australia and New Zealand about the need to build back bigger and better and use these crises as an opportunity to ‘reimagine tourism’. As an Australian and New Zealand tourism consultancy, we’ve also been thinking a lot about what this means, for us as a business and for how we can best support our clients and the people, places and cultures they represent. How do destinations handle the ‘bigger’, what does ‘better’ look like? What are we ‘reimagining’ our industry to be? More importantly how do we get there? https://www.trctourism.com/bigger-better-and-reimagined-to/

11.01.2022 Sustainable tourism is now an imperative focus for operators and communities. Major disruptions such as pandemics, climate change and new technology are influencing the way people feel about tourism, the way visitors are making decisions and the way industry responds to these changing expectations. As connected global citizens, we are much more likely to seek out experiences which positively contribute to the people and places we choose to visit. How is your community taking notice of the shift toward sustainable tourism and making the most of what it has to offer? https://www.trctourism.com/sustainable-tourism-planning/

07.01.2022 For a long time, TRC Tourism has been advocating, educating and providing environmentally and socially sustainable solutions for tourism, recreation and conservation projects way before it was the cool (and right) thing to do. Recently we have been reviewing our own company values assessing how well we practice what we preach. TRC’s mantra is about making a difference for people and places, so we have joined the net zero movement to enact this philosophy. We are excited to announce that with the discovery of an easy to use, cost efficient online platform and some small changes, we are now 100% carbon neutral! 06.01.2022 Rail trails are a powerful tool in (re)connecting community and energising local economies, writes TRC Associate, Chris Ord. The loss of a railway was much more than a transport inconvenience to countless communities, more than the destruction of something that brought people together, wrote Anthony Lambert in Lost Railway Journeys: Passenger Journeys that Time Has Erased. He was, of course, musing on the loss of the engines and carriages that rolled seamlessly along iron r...ails, connecting countless towns and cities across the world, including across Australia’s vast landscapes. He was also musing on the cascade of losses that the disappearance of railways seeded loss of connection, of economies, but also of an important social and recreational experience. Practical connection and recreation had coalesced on rail and in doing so, the economic boom that railways delivered evolved from something based purely in the economics of delivering goods, to one that doubled down by delivering visitors spending money in places it may otherwise never have reached. As the sixties rolled around, a boom in motor vehicle sales and an ever-expanding network of roads meant that the demise of many train lines was inevitable. The deletion of train timetables heralded the disappearance of an inbound economy for many places, and with it the disconnection of towns and communities that once were linked by that iron corridor. But what if the disappearance of trains and iron rails didn’t necessarily precipitate such losses? What if an alternative use for dismantled and often scenic railway routes was employed? What if leg-power rather than steam, diesel or electric was the fuel that re-invigorated the value of railway routes to communities? https://www.trctourism.com/community-on-the-rails/

06.01.2022 Last week some of Australia’s leading trail experts, came together to share, listen, and learn about all things trails at the Sustainable Trails Conference in Alice Springs. Industry, government, Traditional Owners, trail planners, designers and builders talked about what it takes to make great trail experiences, the benefits and challenges and why trails matter. We heard how trails have the power to transform communities, generate jobs, and connect people with country. W...e learnt about the importance of sustainability and trail quality and connecting products and services for trail users. We shared stories about walking tracks, MTB trails, wine trails, pump tracks, urban tracks, aquatic trails and we learnt about funding models, ambassador programs and maintenance regimes. We were taken to Scotland, UK, Africa, New Zealand, St Helens, Derby, Creswick, Dwellingup and many more trail destinations. We got out on country with the Yeperenye Traditional Owners and experienced their hand-crafted trails linking Emily and Jessie Gaps. We hit the MTB trails in Alice and got the red earth of the Larapinta under our feet. We learnt about plans for the Red Centre Adventure Ride and how the Traditional Owners are involved. Thanks to all the delegates and presenters - you made it happen! See more
