23.01.2022 Pyrus calleryana (Chanticleer or ornamental pear). The growth at the bottom of the tree is stress related. Producing growth below the graft. The root stock is usually Prunus (Plum Tree) and can produce long thorns. The regrowth below the graft is useless for the trees development. It requires removal.

21.01.2022 This little Quercus rubra (Red Oak) has been a great little project of mine. I have now eliminated codominant stems and for the time being have one central leader. The lower limb have been reduced by 50% as they are sacrificial limbs. They will be removed spring next year. 17.01.2022 A very interesting day yesterday. Inspected an Arbutus unedo (Irish strawberry tree) planted approximately 130 years ago. Up a snowy mountain in spring. Back to inspect a fantastic Quercus canariensis (Algerian Oak) and then brought this beautiful little Hakea bucculenta (red poker) from @plantsdirectaustralia for my own collection. Trees trees and more trees. Love it.

13.01.2022 This Eucalyptus cinerea (Silver Dollar Tree) was one of my favourite juvenile trees. It had been attacked by pest and had structural root issues. An intensive water program to encourage lateral root growth out wider to stabilise the tree had definitely worked until a big storm 4 weeks ago. External forces (wind) were to much for this little tree. 10.01.2022 This old beautiful Eucalyptus camaldulensis failed a long time ago. But just kept going by producing epicormic growth straight off the trunk. I would love to see if any advantageous roots have grown on the under side of the trunk.

09.01.2022 Eucalyptus cinerea (Argyle Apple or Silver Dollar Tree). At the end of last summer this juvenile tree was attacked by skeletoniser caterpillars defoliating the top half of the tree. The tree has lost apical dominance which means the main leader was affected by this attack and other branches are taking dominance. I have reduced all lateral branches with minor pruning cuts to reduce further stress to the tree. This will focus growth to the new main leader I have chosen and by using tape straightening the new leader. I will monitor the tree, water and fertilise and soon enough I will have the dominant leader I require to create the full tree I want.

02.01.2022 Tree 1. Eucalyptus melliodora (Yellow Box) planted as an advanced tree in a 40cm pot 3.5 years ago. Tree 2. Eucalyptus spathulata (Swamp Mallet) planted as a seedling 1.5 years ago. They are now the same size. I understand the need to plant advanced stock as I have done so myself for years. But if you are on a budget planting the right seedlings you can get amazing results thats for more often that not, in 2-4 years will out perform advanced stock.
