02.01.2022 Extremely heavy rain from an east coast low pumped a lot of precipitation onto the region over the last couple of days. When these storm events happen Shoalhav...en Heads is suseptible to flooding and to try to reduce the impact of the elevated water levels, Shoalhaven Council open the old river mouth once the water levels hit a specific trigger point at Nowra Bridge. Its a fairly rare event and everyone gets very excited when the river mouth is opened because it renews the backwaters of the estuary that flow alongside Shoalhaven Heads. As to why the river mouth needs to be opened by humans, well you can thank Alexander Berry for that. He was the Scotsman who settled at Coolangatta Estate about 160 years ago and used the river to ship goods to Sydney and Queensland. He got frustrated by the shoals of the river which impacted on his ability to sail freight whenever he wanted, so he came up with a solution. He decided to dig a canal (using convict labour) between the Shoalhaven River (and his estate) and the nearby Crookhaven River which was a much more navigable waterway. And thats what he did. What he didnt know was that he would forever alter the river flow in the Shoalhaven River, by reducing the volume of water flowing through it and leading to the complete silting up of the river mouth. Henceforth the mouth only ever opened in times of flood. In more recent years the council give the process a helping hand to reduce the impact on residents and deploy an excavator to dig a channel. On several occasions residents have taken matters into their own hands and dug a channel by hand. The mouth will not stay open for long - usually only a few weeks - but its always nice to see it happening.
