25.01.2022 Something to take the kids too

24.01.2022 Looking for good voice activated apps to reinforce vocalizations? I personally avoid Talking Tom and similar apps due to the unsecured links, in-app purchases a...nd inappropriate content. They used to offer a kid-appropriate Talking Hippo app but sadly it disappeared. Here's the list that I have (a mix of free and paid apps plus a website): * Bla | Bla | Bla by Lorenzo Bravi, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bla-bla-bla/id430815432 * Bouncy Balls (website - can also be used on iPad or iPhone running iOS 11 or higher): https://bouncyballs.org/ * My Talking Dog PRO - Virtual Pet by Peaksel, https://apps.apple.com//my-talking-dog-pro-vi/id1048987261 * Outloud Citymals by Outloud, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/outloud-citymals/id1202245004 * Read Ready Run! by Banana73, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/read-ready-run/id1347560594 (one area included, 2 more available via IAPs, I like this app so much that I bought both) * SoundViz by Tam Nguyen, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/soundviz/id1366922568 (There is also a free lite version. Love that this high contrast app can be activated by voice or touch. Has a fireworks setting. This app is great when you just want the visual effect (no sounds). Great for kids who are sensitive to sound) * Talking Carl by Tayasui.com, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/talking-carl/id417373312 * Talking Turtle HD by FIPLAB Ltd, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/talking-turtle-hd/id464655738 * Voxpix by Milingo, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/voxpix/id627979358 * Yakables by Conversive Experiences, LLC, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/yakables/id1362784646 (an AR panda) * Yap Books - Voice Books by Yap Technology Ltd, https://apps.apple.com//app/yap-books-voice-b/id1398852055 (Higher level. As you read aloud the voice recognition activates animations in the book. Includes several free books, more available via IAPs. The Say & See book has fill in the blank sentences for verbs. The I am Doing book has simple three word sentences with a verb+ing (I am). The Zoo Who book is naming an animal)

22.01.2022 Keep up the good work Victoria.

19.01.2022 To understand Autism better, it's so important to learn from Autistic voices. Here are a few of our favourite videos we've shared this year: From Communicatio...n First "LISTEN", a short film made with and by nonspeaking Autistics (view here: tinyurl.com/ve87z2zy). Video description includes a link to a valuable resource kit and more. From Amythest Schaber, "Ask An Autistic: What Is Autism?" (view here: tinyurl.com/2cbj7c28). From Dr Wenn Lawson, "What It Means To Be Autistic", a "TEDB" talk for Autistic young people (view here: tinyurl.com/w7zk43vn). From Dr Jac den Houting, their 2019 TEDx talk, "Why Everything You Know About Autism Is Wrong" (view here: tinyurl.com/yzetfw7x). 19.01.2022 How amazing is our Treehouse community Bretts Carpet Care has contacted us with the offer to do some carpet cleaning for families who recently reached out for help after our RUOK post.

19.01.2022 I carry him. I know it looks silly, his toes dangle past my knees. He’s getting tall and heavy, too. It sometimes hurts my back to lift his frame, but, I carry ...him. It starts in the morning when waking up is hard. I should make him walk down the stairs, as it’s still something he is working on in physical therapy. But with his sleepy eyes and tired heart, he doesn’t want to start off his day with a task. So, I carry him. He works hard to get off the school bus. One hand on the rail and down three large steps with care. He takes my hand and can’t wait to go inside to play. But I make him go to the bathroom first. He doesn’t want to pause. I kneel down, give him a hug, and a reassuring word. Then, I carry him. At the end of the day, when we’ve worked on manners at the table and holding his utensils with the correct grasp, sometimes he is so done. And there is still the bathing, teeth brushing, and getting dressed to do. From the table and up the stairs we go. Sometimes, I carry him. The world moves fast and demands so much from all of us. I imagine with my son’s age and disability, it is often more exhausting. He’s directed and redirected, pushed and pulled throughout the day. There are times when he’s had enough. That’s when I carry his awkwardly long body against my own short one. Because sometimes, we all need someone to carry us to get us through the next hard thing, to love us through our good, bad, and weak moments. When he’s reached his limit, I’m close to my own. But when I carry him, he somehow carries me, too. This essay by Jillian Benfield is part of her free e-book, "5 Spiritual Comforts for Special Needs Parents." 16.01.2022 Families have been asking us a lot of questions about what is allowed under the current COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria. Here are the answers to some of our F...AQs: 1 Can a relative or friend come to my home to help me care for my child with disability? Yes! 2 Can my child with disability go to a relative or friend for respite care? Yes! 3 My child has complex behaviour support needs, can I take them for a drive to help support their behaviour? Yes! 4 Do I need a permit to do these things? No! These things are allowed under Care and Compassionate grounds. You can travel during the curfew and beyond the 5km zone in metro Melbourne. You can also travel between metro Melbourne and regional Victoria. 01.01.2022 What is a restrictive practise in real life? Post #1 (more to come in the coming days) When someone tells me something is a restrictive practise, the best wa...y for me to understand that is to think If that were happening to me, as an adult, would I be p*ssed off and think You have no right!? The common examples used to explain this for disabled people are things like > Deadlocking a door so someone can’t leave without permission > Locking the fridge so someone can’t eat what they shouldn’t > Giving someone calming medication to make things easier for others or prevent harm to themselves or others These are sometimes necessary to keep a disabled adult safe, but are only allowed with approval and a behaviour support plan in place. But there are a heap of other, more subtle, less obvious restrictive practises that happen, especially to disabled people. Here are some examples I’ve heard recently... > Not being allowed to take their phone outside because it might end up in the pool > Being told that if they don’t have a blood test they will go to hospital and die > Being told to go to the beach with everyone else when you don’t want to, because there’s not enough staff to stay at home and look after you > Being told you only have $50/week spending money (and not knowing about the $17,000 in your savings account) I can hear some of you protesting already! I am talking about adults here, and I’m NOT saying these things shouldn’t ever happen, I’m just saying that they ARE restrictive practises, and should not happen without other things being tried and supported first. If anyone tried to tell *me* I wasn’t allowed to take my phone outside, or I had to go to beach when I didn’t want to, or I was lied to about my health or financial situation, I’d be pretty pee’d off, and so would you. That should be our barometer, I reckon... We need to work harder, as a society, to recognise, and avoid restrictive practises whenever possible. As a parent of a young adult, I recognise I do these things too, and it's hard when you know you're protecting your kid, so this series is helping me work through this stuff as I go. Join me in the discussion? I’ll talk more about this over the coming weeks. Think of this as a thought starter.
