The exotic pest giant pine scale is putting Australia's $1 billion softwood plantation industry at risk and the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) is conducting a response program. A Restricted Area has been established around the above ...Council areas to restrict the movement of giant pine scale host material. A permit issued by DEDJTR is required for the removal, pruning or destruction of giant pine scale host material (pine, fir or spruce) in the Restricted Area. Training is required to become an Approved Person and apply for a permit, with limited training dates available to the end of the year. To date 472 people have been trained with 28 courses delivered since May. Training dates for 2015:Friday 6th November, Friday 20th November and Tuesday 8th December Harkaway Hall, Harkaway 9am to 11:30am. Contact Anne on 0459 210 031 or please reply to this email. Those who should attend the Approved Person training course include: Professional Arborists, including Council contractors Organisations employed by other Government or private organisations to prune/destroy or remove trees (e.g. electricity companies contractors) Any other Tree Worker who prunes or destroys or mulches trees in the Restricted Area or moves trees outside of the Restricted Area Professional Gardeners or Mowing companies/businesses who may come into contact with giant pine scale host material within the Restricted Area You are advised not to work on giant pine scale host material until issued a permit from DEDJTR. The response is now shifting to project delivery with an emphasis on compliance with permit requirements. People found to be removing, pruning or destroying giant pine scale host material in the Restricted Area without a valid permit will be investigated and penalties may be applied. 13.01.2022 Giant pine scale Restricted Area Permit Compulsory Training and Permit for Arborists who work on or remove Pine, Fir or Spruce Trees in Melbourne's South East Hello ... As of May 2015, all Arborists who PRUNE or DESTROY pine, fir or spruce trees in the Restricted Area in Melbourne's South East, or MOVE pine, fir or spruce tree materials (eg mulch, wood chips or branches) FROM the Restricted Area are now required to hold a Permit.. (See attached map for details of Restricted Area. Includes City of Casey, Cardinia, Maroondah, Monash, Frankston, Bayside, Knox, Glen Eira, Dandenong, Stonnington and Boroondara) Background to Permit - Exotic Pest, giant pine scale In November 2014, the exotic pest giant pine scale was found in large areas of Melbourne's South East. Giant pine scale, suck the sap of pine, fir and spruce trees causing severe damage and eventual death of trees. Due to the proximity of giant pine scale to Victoria's billion dollar pine industry, a Restricted Area and legal requirement for Arborists to hold a Permit now applies. The purpose of the Permit is to stop the spread of giant pine scale out of the Restricted Area. Compulsory Training Program and Permit Application Process. In order to gain a permit , Arborists are required to attend a 2.5 hour training session and complete a permit application form. 05.01.2022 Due to exotic pest giant pine scale, which is putting at risk Australia's $1 billion dollar Pine Plantation industry, a permit is now compulsory for all Arborists, Tree Loppers, Landscapers, Lawn Mowers, Gardeners etc who work on or around giant pine scale HOST TREES (Fir, Pine or Spruce) in the Restricted Area (which includes or is on the border of the following councils: City of Casey, Cardinia, Maroondah, Dandenong, Glen Eira, Knox, Boroondara, Frankston and Yarra Ranges..., Port Philiip and Stonnington. Good afternoon I am pleased to announce new September dates for the giant pine scale permit training program for those who PRUNE or DESTROY/MULCH giant pine scale host trees in the Restricted Area or REMOVE host tree(s)/material outside of the Restricted Area. Please note that having a permit is compulsory and those who operate without a permit may incur a penalty of up to $8000. The reason for this permit is to stop the accidental spread of the exotic pest giant pine scale, which is threatening the $1.16 billion dollar soft wood plantation industry. FYI, we have attached an invitation which lists further information about the exotic pest giant pine scale, host tree species and map of the Restricted Area.
