22.01.2022 Today is World Prematurity Day. In Australia, every year, more than 48,000 newborn babies require the help of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN), 27,000 of these babies are born premature and sadly, up to 1000 babies will lose their fight for life. Miracle Babies Foundation, Australia’s leading NFP supporting premature and sick newborns, their families and the hospitals that care for them, have launched a ground-breaking evidence-based online ...resource for families of premature or sick children. In support of their vision for ‘better, healthier outcomes for newborns and their families challenged by prematurity or sickness’, Miracle Babies Foundation is launching Nurture ‘E’ an information hub on the newly updated Miracle Babies website, providing new and improved evidence, education and empowerment for families of premature and sick babies, as well as the children themselves as they grow and develop.

18.01.2022 BEST UPDATE WE COULD HOPE FOR! Its time. Time to CELEBRATE! Celebrate our inch-stones, milestones, friendships, virtual hugs, kindness, inclusion and represent...ation. But most of all today, we celebrate HOPE!! One year has passed since our family and the world celebrated the photo of Maren relating to the ever-so-gracious, Steph Aiello, U walk, I glide., in front of Ulta Beauty. They were lucky to celebrate together one month later when Maren and Steph gazed at the representative advertisement and then danced it out at a party with disabled and non-disabled friends and family. It was one for the books. Now our family has even more reason to CELEBRATE, as the scientific community has given us newfound HOPE HOPE that Marens rare disease is treatable! So it is time. HOPE now relies on your support for the newly founded CACNA1A Foundation, to give Maren and all the other families, a chance for a future free of their CACNA1A symptoms that impact their lives every day. #cacna1a #curecacna1a #milesformaren Please DONATE here to help Maren - every contribution will help us reach our goal to find a CURE! https://donorbox.org/website-donations-138 Visit the CACNA1A Foundation to learn more, read patient stories like Marens and get involved!! www.cacna1a.org Follow Marens progress and journey at Miles for Maren! https://www.facebook.com/groups/221883061706067/ Well Ulta, you absolutely stopped my girl in her tracks this evening. It was mesmerizing to watch her stop, turn and gaze at this poster. So thank you

17.01.2022 Sorry for my lack of presence on social media - things have been changing rapidly and Ive been trying to adapt like everyone else in these strange times! I just wanted to share some of the successes of telehealth over the last couple of months. Little Zachary has adapted to online sessions beautifully and his mum has learnt so many new handling skills over this time. I tend to have a very hands-on approach, so online therapy has given me the space to develop some alternativ...e therapy techniques and improve my coaching skills. Although, I have also had a fair few interruptions working from home - as you can see from my little therapy helper! I am back to doing face to face therapy (while still taking precautions) and also offering telehealth sessions for those that would prefer. Still no hydrotherapy at this stage. Looking forwards to catching up with all of my lovely little clients.

17.01.2022 I'm very excited to welcome the lovely Marissa to our team! Marissa graduated from Queensland University of Technology in 2015 with a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology and immediately started her career empowering people to improve their physical function through exercise. Over the past five years Marissa has worked in private practice and community roles where she has gained experience working with children and adults providing exercise programs in a clinic and home-...based setting. She has also worked in community care providing individualised home exercise programs to help her clients maintain their physical function, independence and achieve their desired goals. It was during this time that Marissa further established her passion for working with children and their families. In addition to working as an Exercise Physiologist, Marissa is currently studying Occupational Therapy at Griffith University, where she is further refining and developing her skills as an allied health practitioner. Upon graduation she hopes to incorporate both degrees into her therapy to ensure her clients get the most out of their sessions. Outside of working and studying Marissa loves participating in Pilates and getting outdoors to go for long walks. Feel free to get in touch if you would like to find out more about how exercise physiology could assist your child or book in with Marissa through email ([email protected]) or directly through the website. www.treesphysiotherapy.com.au

16.01.2022 A clinical trial is currently underway at the University of Queensland to test a new early intervention approach, called ENACT, that aims to improve outcomes for parents and babies. Mothers currently pregnant with a baby who has a first-degree relative diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (i.e. baby’s parent or sibling) may be eligible to participate. Families will be randomly allocated to take part in ENACT or to receive care as usual. All families will receive a report from a developmental paediatrician detailing their child’s 12-month developmental assessment free of charge. To find out more, please visit https://qcprrc.centre.uq.edu.au/project/enact, or contact project officer Kavindri Kulasinghe at [email protected] or on (07) 3069 7527.

Parents and providers can post photos and updates so that everyone is on the same page. You can also track goals and progress. Please go and check it out - it is completely free to join and simple and intuitive to use.

15.01.2022 Ipswich meet up for families of children with a disability to discuss inclusive education.

15.01.2022 You must love him differently, she said. I looked at her curiously when she said that. Why? I asked. Because he needs you so much more than the other two.... Because of the autism. I didnt know what to say at first. She went there. Without fear. Without hesitation. I smiled and said, I love him because hes mine. I dont love him any more or less or any different than his brothers. Autism has never changed a thing with my love for him. I love him because he made me a mom. I prayed for him. I spent 9 months imagining him. And good god he was perfect when he arrived. I love him because he loves me so much. I love him because he may be my little boy forever. I may wash his feet and scrub his hair long after a mama should. We may grow old together. And accepting that almost broke me. But now, I know there is beauty in that. I love him for showing me how to be his mom. He showed me the way and was patient in my journey to get here. I love him because he smells like the wind. And dirt. I love him because Im pretty sure he sees and hears things you and I dont. He sees sounds. He hears colors. He feels love and mad and happy and sad so much more than we do. I love him because he wakes me up every morning by putting his hand on my cheek. And than my glasses. And then he waves. He acts like he hasnt seen me for days or weeks. I love him because hes says M-O-M 350 times a day. He shows me his trains. He grabs my hand and forces me to dance and twirl. He follows me everywhere. And waits for me at the window. I love him because he loves paper. And photos. And cookies. And Capri suns. And elephants, tractors and license plates. I love him because he can negotiate and bribe with no words at all. I love him because he is more himself than any other person I have ever met. I love him because every single day is the best day of his life. I love him because he works so hard to be part of a world that makes no sense to him. And doesnt always give him a chance either. I dont love him differently because of autism. I love him exactly the way he needs me too. Its as simple as that. Click here to join our community of amazing people: https://www.facebook.com/becomesupporter/772295979579532/

14.01.2022 Check out adorable little Zachary trying out the explorer mini! Watch how quickly this little guy figures out how it works. This powered mobility device encourages self-initiated movement for young children with mobility impairments. Zachary is working on his head and trunk control, bilateral propping as well as bringing his hands to midline, grasp and release, visual development and receiving vestibular input through movement. There is a significant body of research to support early introduction of powered mobility in children with physical disabilities and it’s exciting to have this new device to help our little ones explore their world.

09.01.2022 Wanted to share this gorgeous video of Keira laughing at splashing her mum and brother during our hydro session! Our therapy goal was for Keira to tolerate sitting up in her wheelchair as she was in quite a lot of pain following hip surgery. This video was taken earlier in the year and Im excited to report that Keira sat all by herself for the first time during our therapy session this week! For 5 whole minutes!

09.01.2022 The research team at the University of Queensland is trialing a promising new parent-mediated very early intervention program called ENACT for families of infants at risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (i.e. infants with a parent or older sibling with ASD). ENACT commences antenatally and incorporates approaches targeting social reciprocity through everyday parent-infant interactions, as well as strategies to support parental mental health and wellbeing and coping with pa...renting challenges such as infant sleep. The aim is to improve parent-infant social communication and reduce emerging autism symptoms at 12 months of age as well as reduce parenting stress. Women who are aged 18 years and over and are currently pregnant with a child who has a first-degree relative with ASD will be eligible to participate in this randomised controlled trial. Participants allocated to ENACT will be offered the program, which starts prenatally and continues with clinician support until the infant is 10 months of age. Those allocated to care as usual will receive normal postnatal care. All participants will be asked to complete assessments (questionnaires and/or developmental assessments) when signing up and when their child is 3, 6 and 12 months of age. All infants, regardless of group allocation, will receive detailed developmental assessments at 6 and 12 months of age conducted by our developmental paediatrician and a report will be provided to their nominated medical practitioner for follow-up free of charge. The ENACT program (including clinician support) and the majority of assessments are conducted online for participant convenience. However, families will need to visit the Child Health Research Centre in Brisbane twice, when their baby is 6 and 12 months of age, for an in-person assessment. To find out more, please visit https://qcprrc.centre.uq.edu.au/project/enact, or contact project officer Kavindri Kulasinghe at [email protected] or on (07) 3069 7527.

08.01.2022 Look who smashed their goal of taking 10 steps unaided!!! (This is 16 by the way!) We did a lot of work last year working on building C’s balance and strength in the pool and it’s amazing to see the translation onto land. So proud of your hard work and determination!

08.01.2022 Exciting research which may lead to new therapies for touch hypersensitivity in Autism. "One of the central challenges in treating touch hypersensitivity stems from the fact that current GABA-modulating drugs sometimes used to treat the condition cross the blood-brain barrier and cause sedation and, at times, cognitive problems. The researchers needed a way to precision-target peripheral nerves without affecting the brain. Indeed, a series of experiments showed that treatment with isoguvacine normalized touch sensitivity in animals with features of autism-spectrum disorders and even attenuated anxiety and abnormalities in certain social behaviors."

08.01.2022 I wanted to formally introduce you all to our wonderful physio Eliza! Eliza brings her bubbly personality and astute observation skills to each therapy session. She is available for Thursday and Friday appointments which can be booked directly via the webpage or email - [email protected]. Growing up, Eliza always had a desire to work within the paediatrics field. Throughout her years of study, Eliza was a primary-school, high-school, and first-year university a...cademic tutor and learnt first-hand the power of working with children and young adults to achieve their goals. Eliza completed her Masters of Physiotherapy Studies at the University of Queensland, after completing her Bachelor of Science studies. Upon graduation, Eliza went on to work as a physiotherapist within the Department of Education, assisting students with disabilities to access, participate, and achieve within the school curriculum and environment. Eliza joined the Trees Physiotherapy team at the start of the 2020, and is very passionate about connecting and working with children and their families to achieve their functional movement goals. Outside of physiotherapy, Eliza is an avid lover of the Performing Arts. Eliza is the Queensland Music and Production Coordinator at the Australian Girls Choir; a performing arts education organisation catering to 6000 school-aged girls nationally. Additionally, Eliza has also volunteered with the not-for-profit organisation, Girls from Oz, which delivers music and arts education programs to schools in remote Indigenous communities around Australia.

07.01.2022 Lucas had surgery on his legs at the start of the year and had a goal of learning to stand up. He has been doing lots of daily standing practise in his standing frame and we have been working hard in therapy both at home and in the pool to get his legs strong enough. I am bursting with excitement to see this little guy stand up and the look of pride he gives his mum in this video is just precious! Well done Lucas, all your hard work is paying off

07.01.2022 How great are these adaptive jeans that go over AFOs?!

05.01.2022 Today I had my last session with a special little client. I first met Lucas as a little pre term baby in the special care nursery and it has been such a privilege to watch him grow, sharing in the triumphs and set backs and watching him master new skills along the way. Good luck on your journey Lucas and I hope you find a super awesome physio in NSW! It really makes me reflect how lucky I am to have a job where I get to work so closely with children over a long period, watching not only the child but the whole family unit transform on their journey to be amazing special needs parents and siblings
