25.01.2022 Ive just done the Darling River Run. It is a fantastic trip if you want to travel a dirt road for about 3-4 days on gravel / sand roads. Its about 750 kms in total and about 1,000 kms if you do the Gundabooka NP (just out of Bourke) like I did. You may need to carry extra fuel as Tilpa was basically shut.... My blog and blog will follow shortly. #camp #travel #overland #darlingriverrun #darlingriver #bourke #tilpa #menindee #stoneycreekcampers #ipswichmazda #outandaboutwithdayv www.campandtravel.com.au

22.01.2022 REMOTE ROADHOUSE IN DANGER UPDATE: The Great Central Road is now closed to all traffic for 420 kilometres from Laverton to the border of the Shire of Ngaanya...tjarraku to the northeast. Laverton Shire graders will remain at the Tjukayirla Roadhouse for the time being. The situation will be reviewed tomorrow morning. PREVIOUSLY: One of the states most remote roadhouses is at risk of being destroyed as a massive blaze burning through the surrounding scrub closes in this afternoon. With temperatures soaring to 47 degrees, Tjukayirla Roadhouse managers Adrian Douglass and his wife have prepared to leave at a moment's notice as they monitor advice from authorities. The roadhouse is the only fuel stop for hundreds of kilometres in either direction on the Outback Way, an unsealed road linking WA with Queensland. Mr Douglass said the fire had jumped containment lines and stretched for tens of kilometres down the highway on either side of the roadhouse. Anyone heading out this way needs to be aware of that and probably not head out this way for the next few days. Its a very tricky situation trying to negotiate the road at the moment. We are very worried. [The worst possible scenario is] itll burn down. You just have to hope it stops before it gets here or the wind blows it the other way. If it gets too close were going. The fire has been burning for a number of weeks and the roadhouse has been closed to guests since Thursday.

21.01.2022 136-YEAR-OLD WOOLSHED'S FACE-LIFT The largest woolshed of its kind in the world will get a face-lift this year, thanks to some handy work from training ...stonemasons. The 136-year-old Cordillo Downs Station woolshed, near Innamincka in the state's remote far north, lost part of its roof in a freak storm two years ago. A team of tradespeople will work on the building in June while learning traditional methods of preserving historic sites. HSR Australia Project Manager, Mitch Cleghorn, said it will be exciting to see the start of the sheds restoration. "These places really tell a story about the way we lived in the landscape historically," Mr Cleghorn said. "They can be conduits for knowledge and information, they're a way to interact with our past and they sort of have this unity and identity written into their very fabric." The project is a collaboration between HSR Australia, Construction Industry Training Board (South Australia), Applied Building Conservation Training and Environment SA News. Flinders University heritage conservation students will also journey to the shed to undertake further analysis. 20.01.2022 Greetings to all our Facebook friends! All the very best for 2019. It is becoming evident from the Facebook activity that people are planning their trips to Out...back Queensland during the cooler months of 2019. EULO is a village 67km west of Cunnamulla along the Adventure Way. It is situated on the banks of the Paroo River where terrific camping, fishing, canoeing, bird watching etc is of interest. The river is within walking distance of the town. We would love you to stop a while. Visit Eulo General Store, (Janine Rob & Rhi), where there is a wonderful variety of groceris, fruit & veg, great coffee and other things too many to name here, the Eulo Queen Hotel & Caravan Park where Col is always ready to welcome visitors, Helen & Tom at Paroo Patch, good for a yarn and check out their creations of leather goods, bags, patchwork etc and Garry & Mick at the Eulo Queen Opal Centre. Loads of curios to see. Just around the corner and as you head out of Eulo towards Thargomindah is where the Eulo Artesian Mud Baths are situated. Ian & Nan would be very pleased if you called in to see what all the fuss is about. Eulo is also where the music festival Music in the Mulga is held each year in May. Headlinersthis year are Beccy Cole and Adam Harvey. How good will that be! Further west of us is Thargomindah which is a very active town with lots to see. Continue onto Eromanga, the home of the Eromanga Natural History Museum and where Cooper the largest dinosaur was unearthed. From Eromanga it is out to Innamincka and Birdsville. Ask a local for directions and info. #artesianmudbaths #visitbulloo #Eromanganaturalhistor museum #cunnamullatourism #BRB #redbasher #euloqueenhotel #eulogeneralstore #outbackqld#musicinthe mulga See more

19.01.2022 Can you use a CB Radio in all Australian states and territories while driving. The short answer is yes - but Victoria is a little harder to interpret and you’d best be sure to be sure. 19.01.2022 I have just updated my summary table on my webpage to reflect todays announcement by Queenslands Premier Palaszczuk as it relates to lifting restrictions on travel arrangements at Queenslands borders and what it means for travellers and campers from other states and territories. I take this opportunity to wish everyone in Victoria good health and keep safe during these times. If youre from Victoria, please let me know how youre coping and if youre able to get Out&About.... Although, I did bump into a few of you on my trip to Melbourne a couple of weeks ago - just before all this current situation broke loose. 16.01.2022 Camping Tips and Hacks for 2020 #43 - Travelling in a Convoys Something I introduced young recruit cadets to was the concept of being a good follower.... Just as leadership requires experience and training (perhaps more good mentorship), a good follower needs to be able to support the leader and make the whole experience enjoyable for all. I recently wrote a blog on my webpage about the ‘9 Things Not to Get Wrong When Travelling In Convoy’ (link below). The leader plays a large part in a convoy. But, it’s up to the following cars (people) to contribute to making it a success. Just quickly: * Consider knowing where it is you’re going. This can perhaps be in the broadest sense - but if you don’t have any idea, you could be a burden if you lose contact with the group. * Help the whole group by being at the agreed start point at the time agreed or, at least, let people know where you are or when you’ll get there. * Driving with your headlights on can help those in front keep an eye on you. * Keep an eye on those in front so you don’t miss a turn. * Keep an eye on those behind you to check that they don’t miss a turn. * Slow down so those behind you can see you take a turn. * Know your car number (if one is issued) and keep in any agreed position in the convoy. * Consider carrying a CB and keep conversation polite - and listen. * Be courteous and respectful of other road users. * Have fun. Keep safe and follow the leader. #travel #camp #campingtips #campinghacks #convoy #caravanrvcamping #outandaboutwithdayv @dayvcampandtravel

09.01.2022 Lois has been faithful, but after feedback and time in service I need to make some changes. She does need work for a new home but would be great for somebody. The question is what to replace her with? An Isuzu, an oka, or an Iveco... or maybe an ex army 6*6!

04.01.2022 Camping Tips and Hacks for 2020 #39 - Loads of Camping Luxuries We all have them - electric kettles; coffee machines; toasters; hair dryers; washing machines; a...ir conditioners and even pop corn machines. But, can you take them camping and run them off your battery? Well.... yes.... ...but.... First, you need to convert (using an inverter) the 12 volts in your battery to the 240 volts that’ll power the appliance. You’d do this through an inverter. Then, it’s a matter of drawing from your battery to provide the amps required to run the appliance. This is where the fun begins. You see a 1000 watt appliance (say) will draw about 4 amps when plugged into a 240 volt supply. But, it’ll draw about 80 amps when powered from a 12 volt supply (like a battery). Amps = Watts / Volts Now, if you have a 100 amp hour battery, you’d be flat out powering that 1000 watt appliance about 30 minutes. This is because you don’t want to draw all the power from your battery - wet batteries, AGM and Lithium will vary. So you can power some high watt appliances for short periods of time through the right inverter. Your inverter size will need to match or exceed your wattage demand. Other factors you need to consider: charging the battery (by solar or while driving) while it’s being used will help to ‘top up’ the battery; the size of your solar panel/s in watts will determine how fast your battery will be charged (replenished); the charge from the solar panel/s during the day will depend on the season, clouds and shade; similarly, if you’re using the appliance at night or in cloudy conditions, you won’t be charging the battery from solar while it’s being used; running two or more appliances at the same time (eg your toaster and coffee machine) will have a compounding effect that needs to be considered; the inverter will not be 100% effective (through design and temperature) and some power (watts) will be lost in the process. So, have a look at the wattage of the appliance you intend using (it’ll be marked somewhere) and how long you intend using it for. I’ll be posting a more detailed blog shortly on my website - www.campandtravel.com.au Keep safe and power on - and perhaps leave the more ‘power hungry’ appliances at home. #travel #camp #inverter #offgrid #offgridpower #12volt #solar #outandaboutwithdayv @dayvcampandtravel
02.01.2022 CALCULATE THE IMPACT OF MOVING CAMPING LOADS Out&About with Dayv’s Load Calculators are up and running on the website. Click on the link below. The four calculators allow you to calculate:... * How the Ball Load translates to the Car’s Rear Axle Load; * The Multiplier for this Ball Load on your Car; * How moving items in the Trailer changes the Ball and Trailer Axle Loads; and * How moving Items in the Car changes Car Axle Loads. With the Christmas / New Year holidays coming up, you can refer to these calculators when deciding where to place the loads (including the family dog and that carton of beer). You could even use these when deciding on your next caravan / camper; tow vehicle; or when building that ‘dream’ expedition trailer. Have fun and drop me a line if you need to. Remember too that while these calculations are very close to the mark, you ought get the rig properly weighed and checked. #camp #travel #caravanlife #atm #gvm #gcm #mobileweighstation #gvmcheck #outandaboutwithdayv www.campandtravel.com.au
01.01.2022 Overlanding Vs Four-Wheel Driving I’ve had a few questions about the idea of ‘Overlanding’ in a four-wheel drive. There’s many that go out in full-blown trucks with camper bodies, but I thought I’d share an introductory blog for this interested in dipping their toes in the sand, mud, gravel and/or water.... Please share your thoughts. Cheers #camp #camping #travel #overlanding #overlanding4x4 #outandaboutwithdayv #4x4 www.campandtravel.com.au
01.01.2022 Another request received the year is a tag along and passenger tour to the big red bash. If we do it it will be full meals and camping package with entry to the concert. Just waiting for the bash officials to get back from the holidays and confirm details for what I want to do. Probably looking at 7-10 days Duration, and Ill take advantage of the early entry option to get us the better sites. #bigredbash Www.bigredbash.com.au
01.01.2022 I’ve started a new Private Group within the Camp and Travel page - quite simply it’s ‘In The Tent’. So it’s nice and easy to find and remember. I had several difficulties with people wanting to register with the old database and there wasn’t much ability for people (you) to share thoughts and stories.... Now we can share the news, chit chat and technical stuff that goes on ‘In The Tent’; in caravans, campers and motorhomes; and even on the road. I even encourage camp and travel related businesses to promote themselves and share special offers for others in the tent. As a heads-up, I’ll be very strict on keeping this a safe and friendly group. Thanks Dayv Carter
