17.01.2022 Come check out these lovely fair traders at the Hamilton Clocktower Markets!

15.01.2022 Its great to see so many people keen to support ethical fashion. As someone who is passionate and involved with the fair trade industry, i thought I would give ...my opinion on how to use and not use ethical fashion guides like Baptist World Aid and Good on You. How to use ethical fashion guides: 1. Favor A and B ratings. This may sound obvious but vote with your dollar. Support organisations that are striving to improve worker conditions. Prioritize organisations with A+ ratings, most of these are smaller fair trade companies and need your dollar to keep supporting the good work they're already doing. 2. Read the fine print. Read the reports, breakdown of ratings and check things out for yourself. Learn what ratings mean and look at both positive and negative ratings. Having Policies with an A rating was common in Baptist world Aid's report but most had very little transparency, supplier knowledge and worker empowerment. 3. Remain skeptical If something seems too good to be true it probably is. Buying ethical fashion is never going to become easy and using guides shouldn't make people lazy. Investigate, research and cross reference your brands. How to 'not use' ethical fashion guides: 1. Support Fair Trade businesses https://www.fta.org.au/fair-trade-shopping-guide-2015.html the Fair Trade shopping guide is a little outdated but lists a lot of certified Fair Trade small businesses in Australia, including companies like Etiko. 2. Support local small businesses Go to local markets and support businesses where you can ask the maker themselves how the products were made. Although this isn't considered Fair Trade, supporting local fashion is also important. 3. Buy less clothing but better quality Don't buy into the myth that you need lots of clothes to make you happy or to be more stylish. Try to buy longer lasting clothing and clothes that you feel great in and are comfortable wearing more regularly. 4. PRAY for the people who made your clothes As a christian I firmly believe that God is whats going to make the biggest impact on peoples lives. He is the only one who can bring lasting and significant change to the world. So take a look at where your clothes were made and pray that country and that the people who made that garment will know Christ and the light that he brings. In the end buying ethical clothing is always going to be difficult and there's honestly no right or wrong way to do it. People will probably have different opinions to me and that's totally okay. Overall we need to have open and thoughtful discussion and seek to educate ourselves and build awareness to others.
