24.01.2022 There's been lots of interest from residents about what is happening at HomeHQ Artarmon with the construction of their new food and beverage offering. The expansion will be home to the new Acre Artarmon (Acre Camperdown is a very popular venue on the other side of the Bridge). It opens at the end of the month with a new restaurant, bar, bakery and brings their concept of actually growing fresh fruit and veg onsite for their menus. Today I popped by to get a sneak preview. ...Check it out in the video. Willoughby Living In the Cove North Sydney Living
24.01.2022 2020 is a very special year for our wonderful local Cammeraygal High School as it graduates its first year 12 students. The school opened in 2015 with year 7 students who have now progressed to year 12. In fact their 2015 end of year presentation day was my first community event as a new MP and I have been every year since watching those students mature and blossom into the outstanding young adults they are today. I caught up with some of the school leaders today and principal Kathy Melky. Good luck to all of year 12 for what lies ahead!
23.01.2022 URGENT ADVICE FOR RIPPLES IN MILSONS POINT AND ARTARMON NSW Health has issued a public health alert for Ripples at the North Sydney Pool in Milsons Point. A confirmed case attended Ripples on Saturday 3 October from 8 pm to 10.30 pm. All diners during this time are considered CLOSE CONTACTS AND MUST IMMEDIATELY GET TESTED AND ISOLATE FOR 14 DAYS even if they have a negative result. In ARTARMON anyone who attended the Mazda Artarmon Repair Centre between 7.30 and 9.30 am on Friday 2 October is considered a casual contact and should isolate and get tested if any symptoms develop.
23.01.2022 studio A is a very special and happy place in Crows Nest. It’s a studio that tackles the barriers that artists with intellectual disability face in accessing the professional development opportunities needed to be successful artists. I love visiting studio A to meet their inspiring artists and this week I went to congratulate Emily Crockford on her incredible achievement in being a finalist in the 2020 Archibald Prize with her Self Portrait with Daddy in the Daises watching the field of Planes. The portrait depicts her father John Crockford who passed away in January. I am thrilled so many of their artists are winning commissions including for some major artworks around Sydney - its incredible work!
22.01.2022 This week is National Recycling Week As part of the federal government's initiative to raise awareness about recycling, I took part in environment minister Sussan Ley MP's recycling challenge to test how much I knew about what products can be recycled. There is a new labelling system which will help make it easier and you can find out more at Planet Ark: www.recyclingnearyou.com.au/arl ... And another tip: most supermarkets now have bins for you to return soft plastics that can't be placed in your own recycling bin. Here's some quick facts about recycling in Australia: In 2016-17 Australians generated about 69 million tonnes of waste. All governments have committed to reducing waste by 285 kilograms per person by 2030 The federal government is driving $1 billion in investment in Australia’s waste and recycling industries we are working to ban Australian waste being exported to other countries Australia’s recycling rate is currently 60%, so there is much more to be done if we want to reach our target of recycling 80% of all our waste by 2030!
21.01.2022 One of the hidden historical gems of the lower north shore is the Gore Hill cemetery. It is particularly spectacular at this time of year with a carpet of coreopsis between the grave stones. Well worth checking out!
20.01.2022 I have been arguing for some time that the current caps need to be raised to allow more Australians stuck overseas to come home through the hotel quarantine system. The federal government is now using a quarantine facility in the NT which will allow an additional 5000 Australians to return over the next six months and things like the NZ bubble are helping relieve pressure on the system. But the biggest missing link in the national effort remains Victoria which is still completely closed to arrivals for hotel quarantine. The Vic government has indicated today that this might change at the end of November - which is a welcome step. But they really need to get cracking if we are to get people home by Christmas. I spoke about this in Parliament today
20.01.2022 One of the issues I have pursued as chair of the Parliament's health committee has been better support for hearing health. So I was really pleased the federal budget has increased funding for the Hearing Road Map, which our health committee helped lay the foundations for in our 2017 report "Still Waiting to be Heard". I spoke about this in Parliament today
19.01.2022 One of my favourite things is judging the primary school Christmas card competition I run - and this year was no exception with a record number of entries. 18 schools participated and the quality of the entries made picking a winner almost impossible! The winning design (to be revealed soon) will appear on my official Christmas card. Thanks to everyone who entered !
18.01.2022 Really enjoyed talking with the students at Cammeray Public School about our flags this week after I presented the school with new ones. And they passed with flying colours the quick quiz on the significance of the various features of the flags !
18.01.2022 I had this constant feeling of someone looking over my shoulder during Question Time today ....
18.01.2022 Many residents have raised with me their concerns about the possibility of gas exploration and drilling occuring off Sydney's coastline. Today I supported a motion moved in the Parliament by Jason Falinski MP opposing oil or gas drilling off the coast and opposing the renewal of the current Petroleum Exploration Licence when it expires next February. You can listen to my speech ... Surfrider Foundation Northern Beaches
17.01.2022 With NSW Health adding to their lists of venues each day with COVID alerts, it is sometimes hard to keep up. For a recap, here are the ones in our area. First, those where people should test and self-isolate for 14 days from the relevant date even if they receive a negative test:... Crows Nest - Bo Thai Restaurant on Willoughby Road - Sunday 13 December - 4:30 to 5:30 pm Lavender Bay - Kirribilli Club - Monday 14 December - 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm Lane Cove - Hair by Erika on Burns Bay Road - Friday 11 December - 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm Milsons Point - Kirribilli Hotel - Thursday 17 December - 12:45 pm to 3:00 pm North Sydney - Mr Green and Co on Berry Street - Wednesday 16 December - 1:00 to 2:00 pm St Leonards - Charlie and Franks in the IBM Plaza - Wednesday 16 December - 9:00 am to 10:00 am Visitors to the following venue should get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result: Artarmon - Roof Racks World on Reserve Road - Tuesday 15 December - 2:00 to 2:30 pm For regular updates and also to look at public transport journeys which I have not included on this list it’s best to visit: health.nsw.gov.au And please follow the usual advice about personal measures we can take including wearing a mask at indoor venues like shopping centres, hand washing for 20 seconds and using a hand sanitiser.
16.01.2022 Best wishes to the many local residents who will be celebrating the Moon FestIval which is an important time for families with Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese heritage. COVID means that it will be a little different in 2020 but I know there will be still lots of Moon cakes eaten, lanterns lit and time spent with family and friends. While the festival marks mid-Autumn and the harvest moon in the northern hemisphere we have adapted here in Australia to celebrate spring and the moon still looks as good from down under ! In fact this October there will be two full moons !
16.01.2022 SBS Australia recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of SBS television. Its come a long way since its first broadcast in 1980 as Channel 28. It continues to reflect the wonderful multiculturalism and diversity of Australia. As Co-convenor of the Parliamentary Friends of SBS I spoke about this important milestone in Parliament this week ... And I am always happy to have new recommendations of what to watch on SBS On Demand - currently watching The Bureau which is great.
16.01.2022 The outbreak in South Australia is just a reminder of how virulent and fast-moving this awful virus can be. Today I was on Sky News and talked about the outbreak in South Australia and how important it is for states to have a robust contact-tracing system so that Australians can see their loved ones for Christmas. Check it out
16.01.2022 The students at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College in North Sydney have been setting a great example with a commitment to improving recycling at the school. With the support of a grant from the federal government’s Community Environment Program they have put in place a new waste separation system including for organic waste. I checked in on progress today and they are showing great leadership in promoting recycling !
15.01.2022 Australia will start 2021 with a slightly revised National Anthem following a proclamation today: young and free will become one and free from midnight. Good call PM.
15.01.2022 Something a bit different for the usual parliamentary sitting week... Last night members of the Parliamentary Environment and Energy Committee visited Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary on Canberra’s northern outskirts as part of our inquiry into feral cats. Over 2 million feral cats kill millions of Australian animals every day and are responsible for the extinction of many of the native mammals we have lost. The sanctuary is a feral free area due to its sophistical feral pr...oof fencing which keeps out cats, foxes and rabbits and, as a result, it is teeming with wildlife. We were able to see wallabies, the very cute bettong and in a very special moment, juvenile Eastern Quolls. This is the only place on the east coast where you can find the Eastern Quoll in the wild following its successful reintroduction to the sanctuary from Tasmania. With feral cats very difficult to eliminate at this stage and with a range across 99 per cent of Australia, it is fenced sanctuaries like this that will be an ark for many of our endangered species.
14.01.2022 First time at a play in nine months ! For the slightly delayed Hunters Hill Theatre production of the Mousetrap. And pleased to see they didn’t let the programs from the postponed March schedule go to waste !
14.01.2022 The Sydney Institute of Marine Science(SIMS) is doing incredible research for our marine environment. Many residents may have come across their living walls which are creating new habitat on Harbour sea walls - but that’s just one of their many projects. I met with SIMS today at their headquarters on Chowder Bay to discuss their work - it’s a great collaboration between our universities and different levels of government.
13.01.2022 Back to work today with the North Sydney electorate team on deck to help residents. But as has become the Christmas tradition for so many people in NSW, we all stop at 11:00 am for Dr Chant’s update!
13.01.2022 This little fellow shouldn't be hard to miss. But if you live around Riverview or Lane Cove keep on the lookout. Hopefully he can be returned safe and sound.
12.01.2022 Most of us have been enjoying streaming services more than ever over the last few months. But many may not realise streaming services are not required to broadcast Australian content in the same way as our commercial free to air or pay TV services are. This needs to be fixed to ensure a level playing field; promote Australian stories and culture and support our screen industry which has been doing it particularly tough during COVID-19. The federal government is looking at th...is issue at the moment and I have been contributing my thoughts as Co-chair of the Parliamentary Friends of the Screen Industry. I expanded on this an an oped published in the Guardian. https://www.theguardian.com//netflix-has-been-getting-a-fr
11.01.2022 The federal government is providing more funding to local councils to help with local infrastructure as part of our COVID economic stimulus. I joined Mayor Jilly Gibson to check out one of the projects North Sydney Council will be using the funds for - the replacement of the existing steps and footpath from the McMahons Point ferry wharf to East Crescent Street. It’s one of the busier pedestrian routes in the area and in need of some work to replace the cracking and uneven stairs and pavement.
11.01.2022 Good luck to all the students starting their HSC exams today. It’s been an incredibly tough year for all those in our school system but I know that our great local schools and their teachers have prepared year 12 with their usual dedication. It’s a particularly big year for Cammeraygal High School who are seeing their first HSC students graduate this year.... And I am also sure that there are also lots of relieved but very proud parents as well!
11.01.2022 Lest we Forget. The poppies at the Australian War Memorial for today’s national Remembrance Day ceremony.
10.01.2022 Merry Christmas ! I hope it is a very special day for you and your family.
10.01.2022 Great news for our Harbour with the federal government announcing $40.6 million to help repair, restore and protect the sites managed by the Commonwealth's Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, including more funding for Sub Base Platypus on Neutral Bay and the Woolwich Dock in our area. These are precious sites and are part of the government's plan to ensure they stay in public hands in perpetuity. And if you are looking for something to do on the weekend, you can't do much better than exploring some of these areas.
10.01.2022 Blues Point Road would normally be teeming with revellers by now on their way to vantage points by the Harbour. This is what a pandemic NYE looks like. Quite surreal. Stay safe and enjoy the evening however you are celebrating !
10.01.2022 Today the nation will pause for Remembrance Day as we reflect on those who fought and those who lost their lives for Australia. 2020 is also the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and recently I caught up with 99 year old Greenwich resident, John Ulm, to present him with a special medallion for the anniversary. The son of legendary aviator, Charles Ulm (who flew with Kingsford Smith), John was to serve as a Spitfire pilot during the liberation of Italy. He served th...e final months of the war as a POW in Germany. Its just one part of an incredible career including as a journalist and war correspondent in Korea. He is also Qantas's oldest living former employee! I had a long chat with John about his war service and you can watch his reflections at https://tinyurl.com/y3v62h2r. It is an incredible story. Lest we forget.
10.01.2022 Thomson Oval in Artarmon is one of our busiest local sporting grounds and this weekend we opened a wonderful new amenities block for residents, students and sporting clubs. The new facility, which has been jointly funded by the federal government and Willoughby City Council replaces the shabby and rather ancient former building. With new change rooms, toilets, canteen and storage for sport equipment Thomson Oval now has 21st century facilities!
09.01.2022 The government's Modern Manufacturing Strategy will invest $1.5 billion into developing new manufacturing jobs and opportunities right here in Australia Check out my interview on ABC
09.01.2022 After six months of COVID hibernation, beautiful Carisbrook Historic House in Lane Cove has reopened and every third weekend of the month is open for homemade Devonshire teas and tours. So something to do this weekend! And little Simba loved exploring the gardens. Congratulations to the Lane Cove Historical Society and their volunteers for maintaining this wonderful property.
09.01.2022 Exciting news for Sub Base Platypus on Neutral Bay with the federal government's Sydney Harbour Federation Trust opening consultation on a proposal to create new parkland by demolishing the Harbour-facing front of the old Torpedo factory. Check out the 'before and after' images of what is being proposed. To have your say and to see more images of what they have in mind visit: https://www.harbourtrust.gov.au//torpedo-factory-renewal-/
08.01.2022 It's National Week for Deaf People and the Deaf Sociey have asked MPs to send a message of support in Auslan, Australia's own sign language. Thankfully I was able to call in my good friend, Dave Brady, who is chair of the Australian Deafness Forum, to give me a hand. Still needs some work - you can check out my efforts in the video. The week coincides with the UN International Day of Sign Languages, which is on Wednesday. There are actually over 300 sign languages around the world!
07.01.2022 It’s Armenian Independence Day which I know is an important occasion for many in our very strong local Australian-Armenian community is it marks the day on which Armenia was freed from the Soviet Union. As Chair of the Australia-Armenia friendship group in the parliament, I joined with my co-chair, Joel Fitzgibbon MP, to convey our best wishes to our counterparts in the Armenian National Assembly.
06.01.2022 Normally at this time of year 1000s of residents would be enjoying the Crows Nest Festival. COVID has meant the traditional festival is not possible. But we can still support our local small businesses: this weekend (17 and 18 October) the Crows Nest Mainstreet Committee have organised Back to the Nest. Festivities will include deals from local businesses and entertainment like live mural art and music. I met with the Mainstreet Committee to talk about their plans recen...tly and it should be a great COVID safe way - spread out over two days - to celebrate our local community. So support our local businesses by shopping local and enjoying all that Crows Nest has to offer (including great food at local restaurants from every corner of the world).
06.01.2022 This weekend is an important one for those of the Hindu, Sikh and Jain faiths with the start of Diwali. Its a vibrant celebration of light over dark and good over evil. I spoke about its importance to the Australian-Indian community in Parliament this week. Like everything, the pandemic means thats many of the usual vibrant celebrations will not be happening this year. So no Bollywood dancing ! (I say with a sigh of relief - I did get conned into trying my hand at it last... year). But organisations like the Lane Cove Indian community will be undertaking some activities in our area worth checking out. Shubh Deepawali!
06.01.2022 Choosing a winner from the 1500 entries for my school Christmas Card was a challenge! But there was a standout and today I presented the first prize to young year 3 student, Polina from North Sydney Dem School. She submitted a beautiful Christmas image - actually painted on canvas ! Congratulations Polina!
05.01.2022 How good is the newish cafe at Blackman Park. Pet nutritionist Naoka Okamoto runs the Puppy Tail Cafe as well as the Chew Chew pet cafe in Wollstonecraft next to the station. Her Blackman Park cafe is more about the sustenance of pet owners although their a few doggy treats for those walking or visiting the dog park. PS: Before you wonder if I ever wear anything else, I don’t normally go walking along the Lane Cove River in a suit ! I was down at the park to talk to an outdoor meeting of the Lane Cove Probus Club!
05.01.2022 The COVID-19 recession is the most severe economic downturn Australia has faced since the Great Depression. In response, the Morrison Government has committed unprecedented support to respond to both the health and economic impacts of the pandemic. The Australian economy is fighting back and the Budget delivered last night deploys a range of strategies to create jobs, support businesses hit by the pandemic and rebuild our economy to get Australia back on track. ... At the same time we are delivering record funding for essential services like education, health and the NDIS. For a full recap of the budget, click here: https://www.liberal.org.au/budget
04.01.2022 One area that I'm really passionate is the work that we're doing to support science, technology and innovation in Australia. In my regular sitting week wrap, I talk to industry and science minister Karen Andrews MP about some of the things we've announced in the Federal Budget that will support science, innovation and modern manufacturing. These include:... an extra $2 billion to boost R&D throught the tax incentive program $1.9 billion in new funding for the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to support the development of low emissions technology and renewables $459.2 million to support the great work of the CSIRO and an additional $1 billion for research funding to our universities more support to encourage women into STEM careers For more information check out my video below
03.01.2022 Happy birthday Premier for what is a big one ! Knowing your incredible work ethic you will pause for about 50 seconds (there’s a hint) today to celebrate but I hope you can just a little bit - you deserve it. You have so many incredible achievements you can reflect on across those (short) years.... We are very proud of you !
03.01.2022 Today I was on Sky News to talk about NSW's response to COVID-19 and the Northern Beaches cluster. Check it out
02.01.2022 Happy 150th birthday to Hunters Hill Public School which was opened by Sir Henry Parkes on this day in 1870. Sir Henry told the opening ceremony he was confident about the quality of the education that would be bestowed on the students and he was right. Congratulations to principal Kim Dudgeon and the wonderful teachers for continuing the tradition particularly through this challenging year and very active P&C which gives tremendous support to the school. COVID-19 has meant the celebrations have been delayed but I caught up with Ms Dudgeon and school captains Sophie and Benjamin to extend my congratulations on the sesquicentenary.
02.01.2022 It was a huge weekend for Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club with the Club taking home both the Barraclough and the Stockdale Cups. I caught up with Club president Luke McCormack and Captain Steve Morton to congratulate them at Boronia Park today. Great effort all round !
02.01.2022 Absolutely fantastic scenes at the opening of the new Lane Cove Olympic Pool! Today I joined Pam Palmer Lane Cove Mayor and Ian Thorpe to talk about how important the pool is for the community! Armed with support from the local community I was able to secure $2 million from the federal government to help Lane Cove Council rebuild the pool and the results speak for themselves!... Check it out!
02.01.2022 Today is International Day of Older Persons and also the inaugural Probus Day, to celebrate the contribution of Probus Clubs across Australia. I caught up with members of Lane Cove Probus and Club president, Judy Carroll this week. The Club usually meets monthly (a bit different in the COVID world) at the Lane Cove Bowling and Recreation Club. They are an enthusiastic and fun group of local residents who come together for fellowship and to participate in a range of activities. If you are a retiree or semi-retired its a great organisation to get involved with!
01.01.2022 This is such an important plan from my friend Matt Kean. Hopefully other states will emulate this approach which will harness the private sector with government support to transform the electricity sector in NSW. The federal government is working with NSW on their plans with financial support for renewable energy zones and upgrades to key transmission links - one of the key enablers of the significant growth in renewable energy we are seeing. https://www.smh.com.au//nsw-s-ambitious-plan-to-become-ren
01.01.2022 A great addition to the network of Men’s Sheds in our area today with the opening of the new Greenway Men’s Shed in Milsons Point. Congratulations to all those involved including the Greenway Tenants Group. They play such an important role in our community. I even had a go at this impressive wood cutter (they made sure it wasn’t plugged in before they let me near it!).
01.01.2022 Today I took Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, to Artarmon to meet with the team at Millers Tripods. Millers is a family run business that revolutionised the technology behind film and camera tripods - and now exported across the world. Like many businesses they have faced a hit from COVID and have been supporting their employees with Jobkeeper.... But they are optimistic about the future and the role of advanced manufacturing in our recovery.
