25.01.2022 While all the Magazines are going on about what to cook for unexpected guests this Christmas season, I’m more concerned with where these unexpected guests are going to sit since my Indoor Plant collection kind of took over the house this year.... To help me out I got in some beautiful plant stands so I can collate some of my collection.... maybe or I could just buy more to fill the stands
25.01.2022 Today I am celebrating all the men in my life who have loved me and cared for me. Happy Fathers Day I may not have a dad to have a beer with this year but I can definitely raise my glass to the men in my life. ... To all the men out there that show up every day and love us just the way we are! Thank you! I hope you all enjoy your day no matter where you are and what you are doing.
25.01.2022 When you support one small local business you support another. Yesterday we hosted another Crooked LittlePotter workshop. The sounds of laughter and fun filled the garden centre. It was a great bunch of people.... Thank you for once again supporting my epic vision of turning Trevallan into a place of learning and discovery

24.01.2022 I have a habit of not sleeping well. This bad habit of mine works well for you as I spend many hours searching for new localish artists to grace the shelves of Trevallan. Little Tort Creations pots arrived on Friday and they are so perfectly beautiful. They almost didnt get into the show room. I wanted to take them all home by me. ... She creates pots with saucers and hanging planters and the cutest little cow bells. Cant wait to get more into stock so I can take some home. Boss Lady rules if its a one of a kind has to be in the shop for at least two weeks before I can take home! Silly, silly rules!

24.01.2022 So Im not sure at what point it happened but I think it was at some stage between the 100 odd plants being delivered today and the notion that over 100 more would be delivered tomorrow... thats the point Boss Lady quit! She just basically threw her hands in the air and simply stated ... you deal with it! Well we all know when I deal with it complete chaos ensures. ... So please save my butt and visit Trevallan over the next few days and buy all of the new plants I have ordered HINT HINT I may have limited stock of the new Zanzibar Zanzi available tomorrow.... Plus some special Bush Tucker plants Just what ever happens dont let Boss Lady quit ...
24.01.2022 A common statement I hear is I don’t have a green thumb, I even kill succulents and cacti Here’s the simple truth.... so did I before I went to a The Mountain Man cacti and succulent workshop! Did you know that some cacti and succulents come from dry, arid areas and survive out in full sun with very little protection and there are some cacti and succulents that grow in rock crevices in rainforests? ... So you can imagine if we put the shade, moist loving ones outside in full dry sun they’d die and if we put the dry arid loving ones in shade they’d probably die too! So how do we learn what cacti like what? How do we know the proper care and attention to give our plants... All of this plus more will be spoken about at our cacti and succulent workshop on Sunday. Who’s coming? I have attended this workshop a few times now and every time I learn something new.

23.01.2022 Epiphyllum monstrosa AKA Curly Sue Epiphyllums are what we commonly coin jungle Cacti. ... They are often found growing up in trees alongside orchids. This one is believed to have come from Guatemala, where it is believed it morphed its normal foliage into this spectacular curly nature in an effort to capture more light and moisture. The foliage isnt the best part. It has scented white flowers at night that are pollinated by moths and bats and if pollination happens you get red edible fruit .... loving this plant already Being a jungle cactus these plants prefer more of a shade or indoors position. I have found they grow best in orchid bark which you can keep moist but its very free draining so no over watering. I think theyd look great as hanging basket specimens or tumbling down from a high shelf. I would be spraying the leaves with a liquid fertiliser like Triple Boost every fortnight. Allow Curly Sue into your life. She may be slow to get going but give her a chance and she will be a conversational piece with her twisted, curving limbs. We have some small Curly Sues available for sale now.
23.01.2022 Boss Lady thinks sometimes we are just an indoor plant garden centre with all the indoor plants I order. So I surprised her this week and got in some of her favourite flowers (she wont admit it but she loves them!) Geraniums are back! We have ivys and bush and a combo of both! Pots and seedlings. So many beautiful flowering types and colours.... Brighten up your world with geraniums
22.01.2022 Native Wednesday Podocarpus elatus, commonly know as the plum pine is native to east coast of Australia These majestic trees can grow over 30m tall and close to 2m in diameter in the wild. This slower growing tree in a normal household garden would reach about 8-10m after about ten years. You can keep it lower, if you choose and I have even seen them growing in large pots. Dont let size deter you from this beautiful tree. ... These trees can be slow to get going but once established will become your favourite tree. Like most dry rainforest trees they can handle full sun to part shade and are susceptible to frost in early years. They can usually handle any soil when planted out from a young plant but love free draining soil. Fertilise every three months with Organic Link for healthier growth. During March to July you will be rewarded with juicy, pulpy fruits that have a grape-like texture and sweetish, mild pine flavour that is enhanced by cooking. Tucker Bush suggests when cooking with Illawarra Plums, stainless steel utensils are recommended over aluminium to prevent bitterness. Podocarpus elatus are dioecious. This means you have male and female plants. Youll need both to get fruit. Dont despair though, a few of these trees tree would look amazing as a wind or sun break down western side of your home. Better still, ask your local council to plant some as street trees near you. Councils used to use it in their street plantings years ago. This is a beautifully elegant tree with long thin leaves and a two toned bark. As well as being a beautiful ornamental tree, the timber was prized for furniture, joinery and boat planking. While this glorious native may not be suitable for very small house blocks it has many uses and I think should be incorporated into a lot more plantings around the place, especially by people I know, so I can enjoy the fruits of your labour!! We currently have some of these available in tube stock at Trevallan Dont forget to check out Trevallans events page as I have just uploaded a new Native Edible Plants Workshop in October. Link in comments Thanks to Tucker Bush for the photos and information
21.01.2022 I love cymbidium orchids. I have tried very hard not to jump on the orchid collecting bandwagon. Its a wagon that would lead me to bankruptcy and the need for a larger shade garden... property with lots of large trees! But every now and then I just cant help myself. ... I adore all orchids but cymbidiums are flowering right now so they are capturing my heart. These beautiful orchids are like the most rewarding bunch of cut flowers. These flowers will last at least for another two months as long as it doesnt get too hot inside. Once its finished flowering I can continue to enjoy its long strap leaf foliage inside or I can find a nice shady spot outside, in the fork of a tree. I can even put it in a terracotta pot and sit it under a tree and enjoy its beautiful strap like foliage outside. These orchids are incredibly easy to care for. No overwatering, dont over pot, always use orchid bark, liquid fertilise fortnightly and keep in a cool shady spot. Doesnt sound hard does it Its Tuesday. I think its the perfect day to treat yourself with a living bunch of flowers!
21.01.2022 Native Wednesday Diploglottis australis I love saying this Australian Natives botanical name. It has such flow and yet the weirdest set of letters together. ... Say it slowly the first time helps Dip..lo..glot..tis Aus..tral..is This beautiful plant is commonly called Native Large Leaf Tamarind. In its natural habitat along east coast of Australia anyway from Proserpine (QLD) to Brogo (NSW) it can grow to over 35m tall. In cultivation, our backyards, its mainly used as a large shade tree. It will usually grow to about 10m high and 3-5m wide. There are so many things to love about this tree but honestly the thing I love the most is its leaves. I love trees with large leaves and this one has these large leaves that are covered in velvety golden brown hairs. Adding a bronzing effect to the overall Greeness of the tree. Added to that the leaf veins are easy to see and the midrib is slightly raised. Its truely a visual and textural leaf. So it has these amazing leaves AND it flowers! Flowers are like hairy cream flowers that form in the Spring. From about January fruit starts to drop to ground when ripe. These fleshy yellow-orange fruit are often sour to taste, but like the Asian Tamarind, may be enjoyed raw or processed into jams, jellies, sauces and drinks. Diploglottis australis can be grown in full sun or part shade. It doesnt like frosts or windy positions. It does prefer to have moist fertile soil but beggars cant be choosers and can grow in a wide range of soils and conditions. A good feed with a complete slow release organic fertiliser every three months would be greatly appreciated. A beautiful small tree that would be an added bonus to any garden. We currently have some large pots of this and some small tube stock. Dont forget to check out our events page for our next Edible Native Workshop
21.01.2022 Hippeastrums are in flower now and we have some in stock. Some are yet to flower and some are in full bloom. This would have to be one of my favourite flowers and the second picture Is me in my happy place lying under my flowering hippys years ago. That house has been long sold and unfortunately so many of my hippys went with it. The joys of gardening at a new house is that I can start again! ... I have no idea why Hippeastrums make my heart sing. I sometimes think its because my mother hates them and as a child would be constantly thinning the Hippeastrum clump. I think even as a child I just had to have that one thing that would annoy her and it seems its my love of Hippeastrums. So much to her disgust you will always find Hippeastrums in my gardens! Do you have a plant that others dislike but you love?

20.01.2022 Look what just arrived Can you tell? It’s one of my most favourite plants and also the plant I have the most patience for!... I am slowly coming to terms with my garden may never look like a Victorian cottage but it won’t ever stop me from having those style plants. I just have to accept they won’t grow like they do in Victoria and I’m all good! Want more information on Hydrangeas? Check out my phenomenally exciting blog post with the oldest picture of me I could find http://www.trevallan.com/vintage-garden-plants-hydrangeas/

19.01.2022 I love begonias and I dont discriminate between them. If its got begonias somewhere in its name its on my adore list! So if course when I saw Top Hat begonias on a plant list I knew I had to have them. They were described as a simple large bedding begonia. When they came in I was blown away by the size of the leaves. Many were as big as my hand and the flowers are large or huge as I like to say. ... There is nothing simple about these guys! If you want to make a statement in the shade these would be my go to plants. Pots or garden I dont think it would matter. White and pink flowers available
19.01.2022 Boss Lady has warned me I really need to learn to have some spacial awareness .... supposedly the 100 odd cacti and succulents That just arrived wont fit in the cacti and succulent area ... I explained to her it wasnt a spacial awareness problem I told her I am a build it and they will come, type person except the plants came before I had a chance to build it
18.01.2022 My spirt signs have arrived! Who could you gift this too... pretty sure I could just gift it to myself!
18.01.2022 We are a little excited to say we finally have some Low Chill Nectarines in stock. Sunnybelle Nectarine is a medium sized fruit with white flesh. It’s skin is bright red with light sugar speckles. It has been said to have one of the best flavours of a low chill nectarine. The best thing about this guy is that it can start to fruit as early as October.... It can get to around 2-5m and can be grown in large pots with excellent quality potting mix or in the ground. If planting in the ground make sure your soil is excellent quality. For fruit trees I tend to dig my holes at least two to three times as big as pot in comes in and backfill with excellent quality garden soil. These guys tend to be deciduous, this means they drop their leaves in colder months. So Don’t panic if during cooler months your tree doesn’t look fantastic. The best thing about this guy is that he is low chill variety, so perfectly suited to Ipswich’s climate When We talk about some fruit trees we need to talk about chilling hours. Chilling hours means number of hours a fruit tree needs to be exposed to effective winter temperatures for flower buds to break dormancy. This varies between varieties. Most nectarine varieties need 700-900 chill hours but there are some low chill varieties available that need about 150-400 chill hours. To check your chill hours you need to determine the average temperature for the coldest month (usually July). I found this great chart on Heritage Fruit Trees website that gives us an indication of chill hours to average temperatures. Ipswich’s average temperature for July 2019 was about 15C (2018 was 16 and 2017 was 17). So this means that if our average is between 17-15 degrees this means our chill units sit around 300. So we should be able to grow these nectarines without any hassle .... Nectarines are really susceptible to fruit fly so I would also buy a fruit fly exclusion net so you can not only grow yummy nectarines but actually enjoy your nectarines! The other day Claire Bickle Gardening for the GoodLife posted about her amazing stone fruit she is growing https://www.facebook.com/282813145107253/posts/3417921551596381/?d=n

Trevallans fairies are so excited, we have Claire Roe Wellness Witch joining us for two days in a row for Sigil Workshop and Moon Mates While Claires workshops may seem a little woo woo she is all about the practical manifestation of goals. ... 17.01.2022 I had the absolute pleasure of being on radio with this gentleman last weekend. I was excited but really nervous when I was asked to be a guest on the show. As many of you know I do not have a voice for radio, I talk too much, I'm passionate and can sometimes be a little obnoxious (I know, many of you are surprised!) ... Unfortunately Deb was sick so it was just Bill and me but Bill was so fun to work with, lots of giggles and because I don't take instruction well my voice fades a little at some points ... This was one of the funniest interviews I've done and I can't thank West Bremer Radio for this opportunity. Plus tick off the bucket list - appear on radio and not sound like a complete dork! I can't wait to work with Bill again! If you are interested have a listen to the recording and switch your radio to a local station - West Bremer Radio https://westbremerradio.com/goin-feral-29nov2020/
16.01.2022 Creative Ideas so you can have more hanging plants! When I saw this large herb drying rack I knew I had to have it. Its absolutely perfect for hanging plants on inside. I can now hang 8 small plants in one area.... So many possibilities.... oh and I suppose you could use it to dry herbs too!
16.01.2022 This morning I said goodbye to the man I have loved the most, my grandfather. Edward James Robinson, Ted, My Poppy! I chose him the day I decided that his cranky ways were far more enticing than a shopping trip with my mother and grandmother. Even at five I knew that hanging out with my grandfather was going to be more fun than shopping! ...Continue reading

16.01.2022 The year was 2006 and I was heavily pregnant with my first child. Mavis, the then president of Glebe Garden Club - Ipswich asked me if Id give a gardening talk to the club. Now you all know me... I can talk but talk as a professional to other gardeners ... what did I have to share that they wouldnt already know!! ... Mavis told me talk from the heart and not to worry about the rest. I put nerves aside and talk I did.... pretty sure David was tapping his watch at the end as Im pretty passionate and I can talk That speech that day started me on a career path I had no idea I could take. I could just Talk to people about gardening!! Over the years I have travelled far and wide to Talk Gardening with people. From Gympie to The coast and up the ranges. I have spoken at gardening clubs, specialist societys and special interest groups. Tonight I got spend time talking to one of my favourite groups of ladies VIEW Clubs of Australia - Voice, Interests and Education of WomenIpswich Branch. September Marks their birthday month and its always a special night as it also heralds the beginning of Spring. This group of women is an amazing group of women that do great things in society. They mean a lot to me as I will never forget a talk I did for them while I had a teething, breast fed baby attached to me.... I was so concerned, I almost cancelled my talk but I was told oh honey, we all had babies. We understand So talk I did. With a baby in a sling, crying and fussing and feeding. All while I spoke about a topic I am passionate about. This group of ladies are amazing. If you are unsure about what View Club does for our society go check out just the great achievements of our Ipswich Branch here http://view.org.au/find-//clubs/ipswich-evening-view-club/ Now days I can go to talks alone and enjoy some adult conversions but I still get to be passionate about my subject. I still get supported as an individual and I am Still making amazing connections and friendships through gardening. I cant ever thank Mavis and Glebe Garden Club enough for allowing me to spread my wings all those years ago. And if you need a speaker at your next monthly meeting give me a call. 13.01.2022 If you are looking for a living Christmas Tree this year, you really can’t go past the Phyllanthus cuscutiflorus or pink phyllanthus. This is a glorious native with the softest most delicate foliage and dainty flowers. At the moment ours are all coming into bud and it looks like dainty fairy lights hanging off the stems. ... This plant has soft green foliage and pink new growth that has a slight weeping habit. It’s not an exceptionally dense grower but that’s so you can see the little flowers that form like tassels along the stem. I adore this plant and was very excited to use it as a lose hedge in my last house. It grew into a lovely Christmas tree shape naturally but as it was near the trampoline so I trimmed it occasionally and it looked denser and more fantastic than I originally thought it could. These plants can grow to around 3m high and wide. It can grow in full shade to full sun and can handle most soil types. I found it can stress if left for a long time without water (may suffer leaf drop) but it can handle some neglect once it’s established. It can handle humidity well and it doesn’t like heavy frosts but can handle the cold. I think this would look amazing on Christmas Day on someone’s patio all ready to go with presents underneath Living Christmas Trees don’t have to be conifers!!

11.01.2022 Some mornings you just have to put on one of your favourite blends and go with the flow. My to do list is long this morning and I feel like I’m already not achieving. Perfect Potion says that the Mindfulness Blend helps to bring you back to the present moment and enhances our awareness. It contains the nurturing aromas of lemon, lavender and Australian sandalwood pure essential oils This is a beautiful strong blend and I find I only need about 3-5 drops in my diffuser. I can then put my diffuser on the 30sec on 30sec off function and when I come home tonight my house will still be smelling delicious.

10.01.2022 Native Wednesday This afternoon I have a great native that can easily be grown and harvested quickly. A great alternative to its European counterpart. Native Parsley, Sea Parsley is Apium prostratum. ... This is a coastal native that was considered a survival food for the European newcomers as it was believed to prevent scurvy. Growing like Italian parsley with long stalks and flat leaves. It prefers part shade and prefers free draining soil but can grow in full sun if proper care is taken. This fellow is great for sandy soils and can even handle the dry. Perfect gap filler. A Fertilise with a slow release complete organic fertiliser about every three months would really make this guy happy. Angus Stewart recommends growing it in pots and even hanging baskets as it has a slight drooping quality. It only gets to about 30cm high and would be a perfect accompaniment to any herb or vegetable patch. Both leaf and stems are edible and the dried leaves are commonly used in store bought native Australian spice mixes. This beautiful edible native self seeds readily and its flowers attract loads of beneficial insects. A real must have I think. We currently have some of these available in tube stock at Trevallan. Dont forget to check out Trevallans event page for our upcoming native Edible plants workshop Thanks to Tucker Bush for the picture
09.01.2022 She’s back making mats again .... these would be a great Christmas gift for those far away friends as they are light and easy to post.... All machine washable and the bags have so many uses ... Supporting a local handmade crafter helps make your Christmas and theirs a little brighter

09.01.2022 I received the best note the other day. A lady who attended one of Dimensional Chakras wire work workshops at Trevallan told me shed finally found her passion! I have tried so many crafts and they are not for me. Theyre not in my heart...... thank you for opening my eyes and heart up to this......This is my outlet that I have been desperately seeking.... This is the reason I hold Workshops. Its so people can escape their everyday life and discover themselves again. It doesnt matter if you dont know what your passion is, Trevallan may help you discover it. This month we have Some really interesting speakers (I will get to uploading all events ASAP). Some events have already sold out but there are spaces left in a few others. One I am particularly interested in is Sassy Owl HQ workshop. This workshop is all about Mothers learning to reconnect with ourselves, if not for our sake our daughters sake. When were happy, clear, calm and connected to our needs and desires, everyone benefits. Our daughters learn that its important to connect with themselves with compassion, trust and happiness. 08.01.2022 Native Wednesday Today I have one you all probably know but maybe you are a bit like me and didnt know it was a native! Coleus graveolens, synonym Plectranthus graveolens ... Commonly called Bush Basil or the Five Spice Herb! This plant is native from Cape York all way down to NSW. Bush Basil is a very strong herb and is said best to use with Mediterranean flavours like tomato and garlic. You could use fresh leaves on a pizza or blend for a pesto. It also has many medicinal qualities and can be steeped into a tea to help with coughs and colds. Its a vigorous growing herb and can handle full sun or shade and will grow in pots or the garden. It doesnt mind the heat, dry or cold once established. It gets covered in pretty mauve flower stalks in the warmer months. These are great as cut flowers and if you cut the leaves off with the flowers it will work as an aromatic bunch of flowers. Scenting the house nicely. The flowers also attract all different types of beneficial insects. It can get to about 1.5m tall if let go but I find its best to trim after flowering otherwise it can get rather scraggly. As with all my natives I would be fertilising my bush Basil with an organic complete slow release fertiliser like Organic Link every three months. Thanks to Tucker Bush for the photos and information. These plants will be arriving tomorrow afternoon. If you want more information on creating a Native Edible Garden come along on Wednesday night the 9th September https://facebook.com/events/s/edible-native-plants/648268895796233/?ti=icl

06.01.2022 Native Christmas Tree suggestion number three Casuarina glauca 'Greenwave'. Strangely enough this is a favourite of mine. I’m not really sure why. ... Sure it’s hardy and robust. It’s evergreen. Has a really nice natural habit that doesn’t need a lot of trimming. Works well in most soils. Can handle the dry as well as the cold once established. Can grow in a pot or the garden Works well as feature tree or a wind break Only gets to 2m so great for small allotments Really is a lot that’s awesome about it but honestly I think it’s the smell that emits from the foliage. When rubbed it makes me think of pine forests and snow and exactly what Christmas should smell like! Really perfect tree for Christmas We keep our living Christmas trees sitting in a planter so you can even water it and water won't go all over the floor and ruin the Christmas wrapping. PS don't leave any living Christmas tree inside for too long with our horrible stinky hot humidity it may not respond to love... patio is fine and bring inside the week leading up to Christmas ... then get it reaclimatised by putting it back out on a shady patio and moving it slowly back out to the sunshine #trevallansnativechristmastree

02.01.2022 Native Christmas trees are definitely the way to go this year if you are after a living tree. We have some beautiful native conifers available this year and first choice on my native conifer Christmas tree list is Callitris rhomboidea It’s a bit of a mouthful... so many people call it the Oyster Bay Pine. ... This tree is only found in Australia and can reach up to 12m in its native habitat. In cultivation (your garden) it doesn’t tend to get over 6m but it can be kept a Little smaller. This is a glorious feature tree that can be grown in pots or the garden. If you fall in love with it, it will also work as a loose screen or wind break. As it’s native to most states of Australia and has naturalised in Victoria and WA. So this plant will basically grow any where in most soils. Once established it can handle dry and the cold. Like all natives it will Benefit from a Fertilise with Organic Link once every few months and Small Trim in spring. This Christmas why not try a living native Christmas tree. #trevallansnativechristmastree

Its about Mothers/women learning to reconnect with ourselves, if not for our sake our daughters sake. When were happy, clear, calm and connected to our needs and desires, everyone benefits. Its the age old saying put on your own oxygen mask first! When we connect with ourselves and put ourselves first Our daughters learn that its important to connect with themselves with compassion, trust and happiness. We are their role model. If you cant do this workshop for yourself, do it for the younger female generation that looks to you as their role model! ..... obviously we all need it as there is only four spots left! So While Im exhausted already just thinking about my week. I am pumped and ready to do it. Hows your week looking?
