16.01.2022 Great Australians... David Gordon Kirkpatrick, AKA Slim Dusty.. David Gordon Kirkpatrick was born on the 13th of June 1927 in Nulla Nulla Creek west of Kempsey..., New South Wales, the son of a cattle farmer. His childhood home, named "Homewood", still survives and is now heritage-listed. Kirkpatrick wanted to be known by his middle name, Gordon. His father introduced him to music and Gordon wrote his fist song "The Way the Cowboy Dies" at the age of 10 in 1937. He soon adopted the stage name "Slim Dusty", and in 1938 at the age of 11, wanted to be known as 'The Singing Cowboy'. He married singer-songwriter Joy McKean in 1951, and, with her assistance, achieved great success around Australia. In 1954, the two launched a full-time business career, including the Slim Dusty Travelling Show. Joy McKean was Dusty's wife and manager for over 50 years. Together the couple had two children, Anne Kirkpatrick and David Kirkpatrick who are also accomplished singer-songwriters. Slim Dusty became a legendary Australian country music singer-songwriter and icon, with a career spanning nearly eight decades. He was the first Australian to have a No. 1 Hit song which was 'Pub With No Beer'. He was known to record songs in the legacy of Australian poets Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson that represented the Australian Bush Lifestyle, and also for his many trucking Songs. He received an unequalled 37 Golden Guitar and two ARIA awards and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the Country Music Roll of Renown. At the time of his death at the age of 76, Dusty had been working on his 106th album for EMI Records. In 2007 his domestic record sales in Australia surpassed seven million. Slim Dusty died at his home in St Ives, New South Wales on the 19th of September 2003, aged 76, after a protracted battle with cancer. Photo courtesy of hachette.com.au See more
