24.01.2022 "This is why your turn does not come from pulling on the rein. Note the riders hand and leg position and hip angle in each sketch. Note the development of the h...orses muscles in each sketch. Note the shape of the horse in each sketch. A truly supple, truly bent horse is working through their entire body. It is OUR job as the rider to guide the horse to become soft, supple, and through in all movements. Rider one is pulling the nose around, and trying to push the haunches in, with a following outside rein offering the horse no balance, and a hardly supportive inside leg to wrap around. This has created a rigid, stiff horse that will surely be back sore, weak in the hind end, with front end bulk in all the wrong places. This horse has every opportunity, and will likely be so uncomfortable that it will try every time, to run out of his right shoulder. Rider two is pushing the horse from his inside leg to his outside rein. The outside rein is providing a balance point for the horse, allowing him to be both comfortable and willing to carry himself. Because the riders rein is supportive and blocking the shoulder, the horse can not blow out the shoulder, and can only become truly bent along the entire length of the spine. In order to build the athlete you want, and to allow your horse the opportunity to have a long, successful, and most importantly SOUND career, it is important to understand how we ride, even in seemingly simple tasks such as the walk or trotting circles, is effecting each muscle in your horses body. Not all muscle is good muscle!" - Ali Hamann South Coast Sport Horses LLC.

16.01.2022 A great illustration of how a horse is knocked off balance by using the inside rein to turn/bend. The right is correct, as the horse is turning with both should...ers, the left horse has been knocked over his outside shoulder, and will fight for his balance beneath the rider by allowing his haunches to fall in. 16.01.2022 Unlike humans, horses are designed to run on a full stomach. Feeding your horse 2-3L of chaff or a biscuit of hay prior to exercise has two benefits : . 1 Th...e chaff will form a ball of feed in the stomach, which will help prevent acid from splashing up from the lower part of the stomach to cause gastric ulcers. . 2 Blood is normally diverted away from the stomach during exercise, which reduces some of its normal protective mechanisms. Research has shown that feeding your horse before exercise actually reduces the amount of blood that is shunted away from the stomach and also increases the amount of blood delivered to the skeletal muscles and muscles of the chest. So not only are you helping to protect the stomach, you also might be improving your horse’s performance. . For more information : http://ow.ly/CfYy50Dmwnh See more

15.01.2022 Is the expression on your horses face telling you that he or she is in pain? One of the most promising and sensitive indicators for equine pain are subtle cha...nges in facial expressions - known as the pain face. A European research team has created and validated this technique for quantifying horse pain based on facial expression. We use this technique in our hospitalised horses to assess treatment response, particularly in our patients post surgery! Evaluating the facial expression of the horse should be done while the horse is undisturbed. Look at the horse systematically, start with the ears, then the eyes, the lower head and finally evaluate the facial expression as a whole. In most cases more than one feature of the pain face is present when a horse is in pain. 1: Backward, asymmetrical ears. When your horse is painful, their ears will rotate backward. This can give the appearance that theres increased distance between the base of his ears across the forehead. (Note: Fear can also result in backward ears, so this component of the equine pain face should be considered along with other factors.) 2: Tightening of the eyes. If your horses upper eyelid is partially closed, he/she may be in pain. If it covers 50 percent of his eye or more, pain may be severe. Tension above the eye. Muscles above the eye tighten, giving his upper eyelid an angled or V-shaped appearance. You might see the sclera (the whites of the eyes) exposed above the inner corner of his eye. 3: Strained nostrils. Your horses nostrils will be dilated on the sides, giving them a somewhat squarish appearance. Wrinkles may appear at the muzzle. 4: Prominent, strained chewing muscles. Youll see increased tension above your horses mouth. If chewing muscles are obvious along the side of his head, this can be a sign of serious pain. (Note: As with backward ears, strained chewing muscles can also be a sign of fear so its important to consider other factors when evaluating this facial feature.) 5: Mouth strained and chin pronounced. Your horses upper lip will be somewhat drawn back, giving the appearance that he has an obvious, more pointed chin. #equinevet #horse @ Ascot Equine Vets Boehringer Ingelheim

11.01.2022 When horses drink cold water during winter, their bodies must expend additional calories to warm their tissues back up from the heat loss that is incurred, so t...hey instinctively drink less. This can cause problems when hard feeding or feeding hay, it is recommended to try to encourage your horse to drink more water. The water requirement is higher if the horse is in training, nursing a foal, growing or pregnant. See more

08.01.2022 To help you understand what the horse feels when you sit crookedly in the saddle "Load a wheelbarrow heavily to one side as in the center illustration. Now pu...sh the wheelbarrow, and feel how it pulls to the weighted side and how you are forced to lean in that direction to compensate. Thats how your horse feels when you sit unevenly in the saddle, as shown in the left image. When you sit evenly, the horse will be centered and balanced as shown in the illustration on the right."
