14.01.2022 Surrender: We are born with a flight or flight mechanism. It’s purpose is a response on the sympathetic nervous system due to a dangerous or life threatening situation. You can imagine the dangers early and developing mankind has had to face in order to survive, the decisions that have been made, etc.... In the modem world, a lot of us a lucky enough to not even have to face a life threatening situation more than a handful of times, and when needed, it sure has worked - obviously - we are all still here. How many of us carry this primitive but powerful tool with us in in our everyday non-threatening experience of life - are we that driven by the need for survival that control becomes the essence of every decision made? I like to think that in modern life, in a non threatening situation, we avoid the situation, apply our personal Will to the situation, and we can ‘surrender’ to the situation. Surrender is the only choice that can be made that removes ‘your Will’ from a situation. When you surrender to a situation, you are experiencing True Will. That experience maybe positive or negative, but it will lead to a growth, in accordance with True Will, a step on the journey to the knowledge of the Self. In Tantric Hatha Yoga, control of the breath, specifically the exhale, is a key element in gaining control of the flight or flight response. By breathing into the belly, and lengthening the exhale, a nervous response can be calmed down and controlled. Fight, Flight or Surrender ? We have this choice in every moment; Now. Discernment is the key, and control of breath is the first step in the way.
