13.01.2022 We dropped in on trainees during day 2 of their training in digital voice transcription. The Children Court will be the first users of digital voice transcription technology in the CARICOM region. It is expected that the adoption of the technology will improve efficiency in producing court transcripts. Court transcripts are usually requested by attorneys and other officers of the Court for different reasons and at different times. For example, attorneys may request transcrip...ts during preliminary enquiries, and for complex matters. The Director of Public Prosecutions may also request transcripts when an accused person is acquitted and the Court usually requires them when a notice of appeal is filed. At present, the Judiciary uses rapid text entry and Computer Aided Transcription. Sourcing CAT reporters is particularly difficult since the process of becoming a CAT reporter is an expensive undertaking with a high failure rate. The training of digital voice transcriptionists widens the pool of professionals from which the Judiciary can select. Fifteen persons are currently undergoing the training which is being facilitated by COSTAATT .

For the last 3.5 years the Trinidad and Tobago Juvenile Court Project--alongside many many stakeholders in the justice sector--worked to develop a new Children Court System for Trinidad and Tobago. This entailed among many other things, new facilities to house the operations of the Children Court. The facilities located in St. Clair, P.O.S. and Fyzabad became operational on February 28, 2018. An official opening ceremony was held one week later on March 6th and 7th, 2018. Here a just a few photos from the opening of the North and South Children Court Facilities
