24.01.2022 Happy International Literacy Day 2020! Its a day that reminds us of the value of literacy. Knowledge is power, and literacy is an inextricable part of this. In honour of this day, we celebrate Trinitarian Georgia Richter (TC 1989) who, as a publisher and editor, has helped many people achieve their literary dreams. As an editor, Georgia recognises the value that stories possess and their ability to both reflect and change how we see ourselves. ... Many of us will have at least one, if not many, books that have had a profound impact on our consciousness. That, in itself, is a privilege that should be universal. 23.01.2022 It’s been three years since the Australian government legalised same-sex marriage. In this The Conversation article by Trinity’s the Revd Canon Professor Dorothy Lee and Honorary Research Associate at Trinity College Theological School Muriel Porter, they examine the rift that exists within the Anglican Church in Australia, with a recent judgement that supports the right of clergy to bless civil marriages laying bare pre-existing tensions.
23.01.2022 FS:30 | Cíntia Chen | How does someone go from being a newly-arrived international student trying to navigate a new language and culture, to holding a senior position at global consulting firm KPMG in just a decade? Ask Cíntia Chen. After enrolling in Trinity Colleges Foundation Studies program in 2009, Cíntia soon realised she couldnt rely on her natural academic aptitude: she was going to have to work harder to maintain her status as an A+ student. Fortunately, that experience, along with the values embedded into the program of collaboration and critical thinking, propelled Cintia up the ranks at work. Today, she balances both a seat as chair of our Foundation Studies Alumni Advisory Committee (TFAN) with a management position at KPMG.
23.01.2022 Please enjoy Wednesday, hump day: a mood, featuring Trinitys beloved seeing eye pooch-in-training, Urchin.
22.01.2022 Don Markwell | FS:30 | Trinity Colleges Foundation Studies program started as a small satellite unit associated with Trinity College and the University of Melbourne. Today, it is an integral part of Trinity College. Our Pathways School is often the number one choice for international students looking to start their education journey in Australia. Don Markwell, the sixth warden of Trinity College, saw this potential from day one. Upon accepting the role in 1997, Don arrived ...at Trinity and started to really champion our Foundation Studies program both externally and internally. And as a former Rhodes Scholar who attended the University of Oxford, Don recognised the importance of pastoral and wellbeing support for students arriving from afar, and thus ensured support was made readily available for every international student. A legacy that has continued to build year on year. See more
21.01.2022 In the space of eight months, the jobs landscape has been massively altered. So, what will it look like in 2, 10 or even 30 years? Recently, a panel of Trinity alumni tackled this question as part of our Career Connect series for students and alumni. Agility, micro-credentialing and a greater need for multiskilled employees were three concepts that were frequently bandied about. Click the link to read more about what our panel believe employers are looking for today, and the industries that are able to withstand even the harshest external forces.
21.01.2022 Every year, a group of wonderfully talented Trinity students set out to capture the fun, frivolities, amity and achievements of the previous year in a neat little time capsule called the Fleur-de-Lys. This decades-long tradition sums up everything that makes Trinity the special place that it is to our resident students, and etches their reflections and victories in our history. Click the link and take a flick through the gleefully innocent days of 2019 where you could touch your face as much as you pleased and hop on a plane with impunity. https://bit.ly/fleur-de-lys-2019
21.01.2022 Today is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Childrens Day. It's a day to celebrate our Indigenous kids, their culture and heritage. However, its also an opportunity to recognise that too many of our Indigenous children face a disproportionate number of barriers in life. At Trinity we believe strongly in trying to reduce such barriers so these students can achieve their dreams, while celebrating their cultural heritage. ... Meet Kahlee. From Darwin, Kahlee recognised from a young age that despite her tenacity, her potential for growth and success was limited by factors outside her control. After finishing Year 12 in Melbourne, Kahlee was awarded a full Indigenous scholarship to live at Trinity College and study at The University of Melbourne. I loved my experience at TrinityThe main thing that stood out for me is that theres heaps of support for Indigenous kids here at Trinity. The Indigenous support officer really helped us. We had study sessions, where we all came together and worked together, and just knew we could always bounce off each other help each other out. That was really beneficial for us.' 21.01.2022 Events, friendships, clubs, sports, study tutes, dinners these are the things that our Freshers (first year students) look forward to the most when arriving at Trinity College. Its understandable. Many of our alumni count their days at Trinity College as some of their happiest. Underpinning each of these highlights is Trinitys strongest asset its community. Its the meaningful conversations between peers, the support, the experiences shared and learned that truly enric...h a students university experience. And, its the alumni network. When Evan Sinclair arrived at Trinity College after graduating from Ballarat Clarendon College, he was oblivious to the fortuity that was about to unfurl. He had a vague idea of what College life was like. But with each turn, he was pleasantly surprised by the sheer volume of opportunities that were available, from sharing impactful conversations with new friends, joining the seconds footy team, to making the most of Trinitys extensive alumni network via online platform My Trinity Connect. I have a pretty big running debt with the Trinity alumni network given the amount of coffees that Ive had bought for me! Ive been blown away by how generous people are with their time, and Im definitely keen to repay it all in the future. With a network of supportive, generous alumni, Evan managed to arrange internships, part-time jobs, and most recently, a full-time role. This network never disappears. Its there to support you, every step of your career. To read all of Evans article, click here: http://bit.ly/Evan-S-TC
21.01.2022 FS:30 | Cathy Symington | Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Its an old adage that remains true. For biology teacher Dr Cathy Symington, it is solid advice that shes been following for her entire career. A much beloved biology teacher in Trinity Colleges Foundation Studies program, Dr Cathy has loved all things biology since she was a child. Driving her through university and a PhD, Dr Cathy loves to share her passion for the natural world with students. And her enthusiasm is infectious with students often completing the subject with a renewed sense of environmental responsibility that flows from the classroom to every day life. To read Cathy's story, click here: http://bit.ly/cathy-fs30
20.01.2022 This Sunday marks the beginning of Advent. Normally, around this time of year we'd be preparing for special Advent services and our yearly carols event. The need for continued social distancing however, means we've had to go digital. So each week leading up to Christmas, we'll be sharing a beautiful piece of music from The Choir of Trinity College, University of Melbourne, a reflection, a prayer and a poem. This week, our reflection comes from Trinity College chaplain The Revd Dr Colleen O'Reilly.
20.01.2022 R U OK? Today is the day to check in with your mates, your family, your colleagues, even yourself. And given the year weve had (are having), this question is more important than ever. Its a question that should be asked today, tomorrow and any old day, because mental health is important every single day. We think today is a fitting time to celebrate a recent initiative by Trinity Colleges Outreach Committee. Trinity College residents both on and off campus have been making... a bold fashion choice as part of an outreach initiative in support of the Black Dog Institute. On the first day of spring, 27 residents on and off campus cut their hair into mullets. Yes, mullets. Business in the front, party in the back mullets. Over the course of September, these students will be growing out their mullets with the aim of raising funds and awareness for mental health. All proceeds raised will go towards the Black Dog Institute's work in the early detection, prevention, and treatment of common mental health disorders. (So far, they have raised over $3,500!) An amazing effort. Its incredible to see the way our students have supported one another during this very different year. If you'd like to support their cause, you can find their page here: http://bit.ly/glorious-mullets-TC-fundraiser
20.01.2022 From Trinity College, to Harvard Business School, New York Toy Fair and finally a private investment firm that focusses on emerging markets, Phyl Georgiou (TC 2003) has forged a career path unlike any other. Hear from this entrepreneurial shining star on how his journey led him to the position of Head of Strategy at LeapFrog Investments, a company where its profit-with-purpose mantra has seen it go from strength to strength.
19.01.2022 Despite leaving the Mornington Peninsula for Noosa at a very young age, Finn Blakes heart belonged to Victoria. Or, more specifically, to AFL. His love for the game didnt diminish with age nor distance. It grew into a passion, then an ambitious goal and now, a reality. And it was a chance encounter with another footy fanatic in Noosa that led Finn to Melbourne and working for McGuire Media. Rather than rest on the knowledge that he had a foot in the door, Finn wanted to ex...pand his knowledge of both broadcast and business and set himself up for limitless success. In true Trinitarian style, Finn enrolled in tertiary study at The University of Melbourne (and moved in next door). Between College, uni and working life its a fine balancing act. But rather than detract, Finn says its because hes living at College that hes able to juggle everything at once. Trinity has motivated me to get the most out of all aspects of my life, as the College provides me with the academic support, pastoral care and sporting opportunities that I need.
19.01.2022 Our Rusden Curator of Arts and Archives has put together an in-depth look into the genesis of the Juttoddie Cup. It's a great body of work, looking at how this frivolous event in 1931 grew into one of Trinity's most beloved and long-lasting traditions. Head to our website to check it out.
19.01.2022 Five current and former members of our Trinity College choir recently collaborated with 35 outstanding choral singers from around the country to create this beautiful performance. Trinity College's Director of Music Christopher Watson, Peter Campbell, Janine Harris, Andrew Fysh and Kristy Biber lent their talents to this virtual choir for a special one-off performance of Thomas Talliss Spem in Alium. Like many others, The Choir of Trinity College, University of Melbourne has been forced apart (temporarily) by this ongoing pandemic. Listening to this moving and powerful piece is a somewhat sombre reminder of what we're currently missing, but also a joyful instance of what's to one day return.
18.01.2022 Eleanor | Its so phenomenal to think that I was in the same place, the same age as my grandfather, who had the exact same experiences as me. The Trinity community has been growing for over a century. Once youre a part of our community, no matter where you end up, youll always be a Trinitarian. If you know someone who is planning on studying at The University of Melbourne next year, tell them to head to our website to learn more about living on campus in 2021: http://bit.ly/tc-meet-eleanor 2021: Bring. It. On.
18.01.2022 A great result: 30 Trinity College Foundation Studies graduates have been awarded a commerce #scholarship at The University of Melbourne which is twice as many as this time last year! This is a fantastic result and testament to the dedication and excellence of our Trinity Pathways School graduates.
18.01.2022 Our residential community at Trinity College is filled with brilliant, talented, kind and creative souls. Izzy Hollingdale is one such soul. Originally from Perth, Izzy moved to Trinity when she started her history degree at the University of Melbourne. This future historian also happens to be an established musician. With a voice thats both exciting and comforting, Izzy has been writing and performing her own music for years. And once life starts to go back to normal, she cant wait to share her new music with audiences around Melbourne. Click the link to read Izzys story, and to find her music on Spotify: http://bit.ly/Izzy-QandA
17.01.2022 We won! Project 100, our newest residential building, was awarded the Best Overend Award in the Multiple Housing Category of the Vic Chapter - Australian Institute of Architects Awards last Friday. A massive congrats (and thanks) to Hayball and Harris HMC, for bringing this concept to life! Future residents, take note: you could be living in an architectural award-winning building in 2022!
17.01.2022 Very cool to see our 2019 FS Alum of the Year Red Hong Yi featured in the new LONGINES campaign, The Pioneer Spirit Lives On. As a renowned international artist who continues to make her mark on the world, it’s fitting that she has been chosen for this ambassadorship. Congrats, Red!
17.01.2022 Less than 24 hours until our Freshers arrive on campus and start rockin’ their academic gowns! We're just a little bit excited!!
17.01.2022 It is not uncommon to struggle with your identity as a teenager, but when youre gay and attending a sports-obsessed, all-boys school, finding your place in the world can be even more challenging. The feeling of not quite fitting in can take an enormous toll on your mental health and it can take years to find peace with who you really are. For first-year Trinity student Hugo Hart, this was an all-too-familiar experience, and there would be many highs and lows before he felt c...omfortable being himself. Now, Hugo shares his story as the first instalment of a Q&A series with some of our current students. In this heartfelt piece, Hugo speaks of his experiences with bullying and self-doubt, his family history as an Indigenous Australian, and his ability to slowly build a tight knit, supportive community around him back in Adelaide, as he became more comfortable embracing his identity. Upon arriving at Trinity earlier this year, Hugo discovered that his identity wasnt something to hide, but to celebrate, saying that Trinity is the first environment where I have been able to come out to all of my peers and I think this is a true reflection of the accepting and progressive culture it possesses.
17.01.2022 For student Charlie Sutterby, getting into The University of Melbourne was grand, but securing a place at Trinity that was the ‘golden ticket’. It was her path to finding a new community, new friends, and growing in an environment where everyone wants to become the best versions of themselves. And it couldn’t have come at a better moment, after enduring one of the toughest years of her life.
16.01.2022 While we patiently make our way through this strange year, its wonderful to see signs of progress. Our future home for Trinity Colleges Foundation Studies program is coming along nicely! Well be occupying six floors of this beautiful new space, located on Elizabeth Street, just down the road from the Trinity College main campus and The University of Melbourne. Our new Elizabeth Street campus will be purpose built and will include extensive formal and informal teaching spaces, a library, student common areas, kitchen facilities, and indoor and outdoor activity spaces.
16.01.2022 Last week some of our very talented Foundation Studies students (and staff!) put forward their VMA-worthy submissions for the first ever Trinity College Virtual Lip Sync Battle. There were too many stellar performances to squeeze into this 60-second clip. Congratulations to all who participated, and thanks to our judges: Karen Thomas, Heather Cetrangolo and Louis Clay.
16.01.2022 What a difference a year makes. It’s been a year since we broke ground on what will be our Foundation Studies program’s future home 611 Elizabeth, part of the Elizabeth North educational and biomedicine precinct project. It’s fantastic to see the progress that’s being made. An outstanding achievement, especially given this project began just as the world began to suffer the consequences of COVID-19.
15.01.2022 While were all aching for life to return to normal, virtual gatherings and live-streamed sermons do possess their own benefits This weekend, our Dean of Trinity College Theological School, the Revd Canon Dr Bob Derrenbacker, is simultaneously preaching at three different churches across Melbourne. St Aidans Anglican Church Strathmore, Holy Trinity Williamstown, and St Pauls Cathedral Melbourne will all hear from Fr Bob. You can head to their respective websites to tune in, or click the link below to watch the live stream from St Pauls Cathedral, commencing tomorrow at 10am.
15.01.2022 Its World Friendship Day! Every year at Trinity College, new friendships bloom in our Foundation Studies program, in our Residential College and our Theological School. Friendships, and relationships, that last a lifetime. Just ask Stephanus Hieronymus. He shares how Trinity helped him build long-lasting friendships, and even find his future wife.
13.01.2022 Big news: the 2020 edition of our annual magazine Trinity Today has been released! An interactive digital version can be viewed online. In this edition we are celebrating the members of the Trinity community who have made, or are making, a positive impact on the world as a result of their big ideas and dreams. This includes an Indigenous alum who has his eyes on the country's top job; actor, comedian and director Rob Sitch, who created some of Australia’s most iconic on-scree...n characters (this is going straight to the pool room); Dr Brendan Murphy, who helped steer us through the COVID-19 pandemic; funny man Ronny Chieng, who starred in the Hollywood blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians and now has a plum correspondent gig in New York City; Chloe Buiting, who's on a mission to save our wildlife and fragile ecosystem; Jeanine Hourani, who is helping to share the stories of refugees in Australia; and Simon Griffiths, the entrepreneur who sat on a toilet for 50 hours to kickstart his highly successful social enterprise Who Gives A Crap. Suffice to say, there are a lot of big ideas in there. Happy reading!
13.01.2022 Our Trinity runners are at it again! Our runners are pounding the pavement for charity. The Trinity Connors Run team are more than 75% through their 12-hour relay. Every half hour between 6am and 6pm, one or more members of the team will be stretching their legs for a good cause. Their goal is to try and raise $5,000 for brain cancer research, care and development. This is a great initiative helping to change the odds for young people with brain cancer!... Big shoutout to the Melbourne participants for slogging it out through single-digit temperatures and rain! If you'd like to donate, you can find their fundraising page here: http://bit.ly/team-trinity

11.01.2022 Networking is a powerful tool that can open doors and reveal hidden opportunities. But in this era of extreme virtual fatigue, is it possible to network effectively online? According to our recent panel of experts: yes. Cíntia Chen (TCFS 2009) was joined by Berlin Liew (TCFS 2007) and Chris Yong (TCFS 1997) to discuss the tips, tricks and benefits of virtual or remote networking. Click the link to see what our experts had to say.
11.01.2022 Resilience is often earned, rarely gifted. When youre born 13 weeks premature, endure 16 operations and constantly move as a kid, becoming resilient and adaptive is inevitable. For Meg Thompson, this experience taught her how to adapt and accept change. Resilience is embedded into her. So when faced with a daunting task or opportunity to grow, theres no stopping her. Today, Meg splits her time between martial arts, uni, and her greatest love dance. Sometimes, these world...s collide, as was the case when she took on a role as a performance coordinator for MUDC (Melbourne University Dancesport Club). It was a demanding role for someone juggling so much. But as Meg says, It was an amazing learning opportunityIm glad I did [it]. For someone who is always keen to learn and be challenged, this is the perfect environment: learning and taking every available opportunity at The University of Melbourne, while living in a warm and supportive collegiate environment like Trinity College. 11.01.2022 FS:30 | Jack Migdalek | Jack has a world of experience when it comes to performance and expression. Literally. Working in the performing arts and education, Jack went from Australia, to the UK, to Japan, and back home again, to begin his tenure as a drama teacher for Trinity College, 24 years ago. It is an incredibly rewarding role for Jack, who stresses that drama isnt (necessarily) about discovering new acting talent, but rather about helping students to develop their confidence with presenting and collaboration skills. Often students come in very confused as to why [its compulsory], he says. But usually within a few weeks, they really embrace it and you can see it. It's really a vital thing to do with their social and emotional wellbeing.
10.01.2022 From the moment you step through the gates of Trinity, you realise you're becoming part of something special. That's because Trinity College is a community that's been building for almost 150 years. And we have some unique traditions that hold the culture in place across generations. We have formal dinners where everyone rocks up to the dining hall in their academic gowns (so fancy!). Then there's Juttoddie, which has been around for almost 90 years. And then there's 'Tige...r WOO!' which...is hard to explain. But after your first year at Trinity you'll understand. Click the link below to apply, or book a tour, and take your first step towards becoming a Trinitarian TIGER WOO! https://bit.ly/TC-culture #tigerwoo22
10.01.2022 Today is Shrove Tuesday. Or, you may be more familiar with its nickname, ‘Pancake Day’. Shrove Tuesday is immediately followed by Ash Wednesday and Lent, a significant and important date on the Christian calendar. Butwhy ‘Pancake’ Tuesday? And what’s the story behind the ash?... Trinity College Chaplain the Revd Dr Colleen O’Reilly AM is here to explain!
10.01.2022 We often say that living at College provides students with a more enriching university experience. Trinitarian Charlie Baylis is proof of this ideal. After graduating from Geelong Grammar School, former boarder Charlie was initially drawn to Trinity on a practical level: he needed somewhere to live and wanted to make new friends while at uni. But once he got to College, his overall experience was far greater than he couldve imagined: from making new friends from a whole rang...e of backgrounds, to leading the 1st Eight rowing team to victory in the intercollegiate race, to receiving stellar academic support that saw him excel in his studies. Put simply: Trinity College was the best three years of my life. Click here to read Charlies story: https://bit.ly/meet-Charlie-B-TC
07.01.2022 Priyansh Parekh (TCFS 2017) used his downtime while living in Melbourne to perfect his culinary wizardry. Using beautiful, seasonal produce from places like Queen Vic Markets, he would create plant-based dishes that would convert even the most devout meat eater. And now, he’s taken his vegan pop-up restaurant to the people of Dubai, aiming to save the planet, one vegan dish at a time.
07.01.2022 Joe | One of the biggest surprises to me about college were the amount of sporting opportunities availableit really helps with making bonds & friendships. If you live and breathe sport, or even if youre not much of an athlete, Trinity College has a wide range of sports that you can participate in. Form close relationships with your team-mates, and get involved in the long tradition of the University of Melbourne intercollegiate sport. Know someone planning on studying at The University of Melbourne next year? Tell them to check out Trinity: https://bit.ly/tc-meet-joe
06.01.2022 Jed Van Din Thang | FS:30 | Staff and teachers at Trinitys Pathways School are always encouraging students to get involved and make the most of the opportunities available to them. Its advice that former Foundation Studies student Jed Van Din Thang took to heart. From joining Trinity clubs and societies and the Young Christian Leadership Program, to recently working as the publicity director for the University of Melbournes Myanmar Student Association, Jed is always ready to get involved, to listen, to learn and to share. Its a quality that he hopes will serve him well in his future career working in social enterprise, or, perhaps, politics..? Watch this space!
06.01.2022 On World Refugee Day, we share the inspiring story of Jeanine Hourani (TC 2013). We follow her journey from being born stateless in Bahrain, to arriving in Australia, coming to Trinity College, and being inspired to dedicate her professional life to amplifying the stories of refugees and asylum seekers through Road to Refuge.
06.01.2022 Congrats to The University of Melbourne on maintaining its position as Australia's #1 university. Our next door neighbour has risen six places in the internationally-recognised Shanghai Rankings Academic Ranking of World Universities. Were incredibly proud of our strong symbiotic relationship with the University of Melbourne thats continued for over a century.
05.01.2022 Jeanine || 'I didnt even know what a college was when I appliedmy years at Trinity helped me to get to where I am today.' From a stateless refugee to director of her own not-for-profit, Jeanine embodies the Trinity College community spirit a welcoming warmth that youll feel from day one. If you're planning on studying at The University of Melbourne in 2021, why not move in next door?! Click here to learn more: http://bit.ly/TC-Jeanine
04.01.2022 Happy Year of the Ox! We chatted to three Foundation Studies students from China to learn about how they celebrate Lunar New Year with their families and how they carried on the tradition when in Melbourne.
04.01.2022 Min Thant Aung | FS:30 | It’s fair to say 2020 didn’t quite go as Min Thant Aung [Tony] had planned (or anyone else for that matter). When his cohort started in February, it was all face-to-face classes, in-person events and no social distancing. Then COVID hit. Despite the technical hiccups and Zoom fatigue, Tony and his peers found ways to adapt. Through virtual social clubs, socially distanced meet-ups (when restrictions were relaxed) and connecting digitally with the wide...r Foundation Studies alumni community, Tony was able to firmly set roots down in Melbourne. Freshly graduated and with restrictions easing, Tony is ready to fully immerse himself in Australian culture and his next challenge a Bachelor of Design at the University of Melbourne.
04.01.2022 Happy Wear It Purple Day! Today we crack out our finest purple attire and demonstrate to our young LGBTIQA+ community that they are loved, accepted and supported. While wearing the colour purple is the order of the day, its purpose and meaning goes well beyond the superficial. We chatted to two representatives of Trinity Colleges Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA), Jasper and Rose, to find out about their role in facilitating a safe and uplifting environment for members of ...Trinitys LGBTIQA+ community. From running events as part of Wear It Purple Day and IDAHOBIT, to educating and fostering a safe environment for honest conversations, Rose and Jasper provide us with insight on what it means to be a queer representative, and why occasions like Wear It Purple Day are so important for the mental and overall wellbeing of our LGBTIQA+ youth. #wearitpurpleday #wearitpurple2020
03.01.2022 Congratulations to Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs on her recent win at the 2020 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards. At just 18 years old, Siena, a member of the extended Trinity community, is one of the youngest ever NATSIAA award winners. Siena's work, 'Shinkansen', is a beautiful piece, reflective of a period of deep change in her life. This artwork was created when I went overseas to Japan. I actually left home three days after my grandma died and it was a shock. So, I guess this video was a response and how I was feeling in this moment, sitting on that bullet train in Japan.
03.01.2022 If you're thinking of living at Trinity College next year but are worried about missing your pet: heres a good boy who is going to help ease you into College life. This is Urchin. Hes our seeing eye puppy in training. He will likely be graduating from guide dog school next year, but hell be around for most of first semester. As you can see, he is a fluffy ball of love.
02.01.2022 In Vino Veritas! Shoutout to our Wine Cellar club for a) timing their wine tour *seriously* well before lockdown and b) for being one of the best dressed clubs on campus.
02.01.2022 The annual TISC Night Markets are not only an opportunity for our Trinity International Students Committee to celebrate the different cultures that make up our diverse community, it’s also the oak’s time to shine.
02.01.2022 Happy Valentine’s Day! Maybe it’s the beautiful, almost romantic grounds, or the happy, warm spirit that emanates from our community, but countless couples have met and fallen in love at Trinity College over the decades.
