07.01.2022 Preparing to play or train. What should I be doing before I play/train? Having been around junior and amateur sports for so long, this is something I see either done wrong, or worse, not done at all, almost everywhere. ... One common warm up modality I see used a lot is static stretching before games/training. One of the main reasons why this is a no no is that static stretching reduces the muscular ability to recruit motor units during performance and if you can recruit motor units, you lose out on strength and power and lose out on performance. [1, 2] Physical preparation is so important pre-game and practice, or if you’re preparing for a weight room session as, done properly, it will increase blood flow, increase intramuscular temperature and by using movement patterns specific to the sport of exercises, improvements in mobility, stability and speed and power will be seen. [1, 3] Don’t forget the mind too! Mental preparation for both before and during play can have a huge impact on performance and wellbeing, so be sure to be find your focus, trust your training and be kind to yourself and your teammates. Creating and using pre-performance routines can help focus your mind on positive outcomes and remove any superstitious behaviours that can affect your physical technique.
