14.01.2022 Well here we are, Spring has sprung and all our slithery friends are awakening from their Winter slumber. We have a large variety of snake species; A couple of ...them are regarded dangerous to humans but many of them are also quite harmless. Many people are shocked when they find that there is a snake in their house, which is something I find quite fascinating. You see, the fact is there are snakes in all parts of Australia, and here in the Blue Mountains I can guarantee there are snakes in almost every street! But stop there! Don't panic! You're going to be ok; the snakes aren't going to come out and ambush you as you walk down your garden path. They are actually really afraid that you're going to eat them, so they try to hide from you as best they can. They see you coming and they curl up as tight as they can under a log or rock or in some thick undergrowth, hoping to be passed by without being spotted. While you can't stop snakes from coming on to your property entirely, there are some things you can do to prevent them from taking up residence. 1. Keep gardens tidy - don't have excess leaf litter or messy undergrowth around garden beds etc. 2. Keep lawns mowed - snakes love to move about unnoticed in long grass. 3. Keep rubbish/log piles/building materials up off the ground - snakes love to hide under all these things. 4. Keep rodent populations under control - bird aviaries and chook pens attract mice and mice attract snakes. 5. Beware of snakes in retaining walls and around fish ponds - now, I'm not saying you should rip out your retaining wall and fill in your fish pond. These things are nice to have in our yards but just be aware that snakes appreciate these too. -Basically, a tidy yard with nowhere for a snake to hide and nothing to eat means that any snake that comes through will most likely move along and won't hang around. If you have a snake in your yard the best thing to do is to leave it alone. Watch it from distance and even take a photo if you like. If you have children, this is a good opportunity to teach them that they should leave snakes alone and just watch from a distance. Never try to approach, catch or kill a snake as it may act defensively. The snake will almost always move off in its own time. If there is a snake inside your house or in a garage the best thing you can do is call a professional snake catcher. This way the snake can be removed safely. Again, you should never try to approach a snake yourself. More often than not, people who get bitten by snakes are trying to catch or kill the snake. Attached are a few photos for identification purposes .

09.01.2022 Good news from Annastacia Palaszczuk MP: From 1am on Thursday, October 1, we’re increasing the number of people who can gather at venues and events, as long as it’s outdoors. It means businesses like outdoor dining, beer gardens, theme parks and zoos, can increase the number of patrons outdoors from one per 4 square metres to one per 2 square metres. The maximum number of attendees permitted at events with a COVID Safe Checklist will increase from 500 to 1,000 per day. Sea...ted capacity at outdoor stadiums, amphitheatres and outdoor performance venues with a COVID Safe Plan can increase from up to 50% to up to 75%. This is another safe, measured step to support Queensland businesses and ensure the economy rebounds - not the virus. See more

02.01.2022 Remembrance Day 2020. Join us tomorrow from 10.30am as we feature a special tribute program - "The Unknown Soldier" to remember those who have fought for us. On the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 11th month of the year, we stop to remember those who have fought for us in armed conflict, and is the day the First World War came to a close a hundred and two years ago. The Unknown Soldier 10.30am -11am... On the second anniversary of the armistice following the end of the Great War, the remains of a single Unknown Soldier were brought home from the battlefields of the Western Front. Given the scale of the carnage and the fact that so many of the fallen were simply unidentifiable, the idea to commemorate the dead through the remains of one anonymous soldier - that would represent them all - was more than just pragmatic. As an idea it had a symbolic, almost poetic, resonance. In this moving feature marking the centenary of Armistice Day, Moira asks whether the Unknown Soldier is finally an icon of war or peace; of sorrow and mourning or is he a warning to us still?
