02.01.2022 The TV series Seachange launched in 1998 was pitched perfectly. Divorced high-flying lawyer 'escapes' the city to find healing and romance in Pearl Bay (aka Barwon Heads). The idea caught on and prosperous 40-something baby-boomers bought weekender retreats. Some did a treechange. The movement lost momentum after the GFC and the coming of the inner-city hipster/knowledge-worker ascendancy. But perhaps the #coronavirus will change our thinking. Maybe crowded cafes aren't ..."oh-so-European" and "sophisticated"; maybe they're just spaces that are filled with contagion? In this world, an escape-the-city life change looks quite attractive and especially to cute lifestyle towns within striking distance of the CBD. Negotiate work-from-home with your employer. Make sure there's local broadband access. And off you go to reinvent yourself in your own version of Pearl Bay.
