24.01.2022 Anyone wanting to know how caffeine works in our system? Guest post here by my sis (who is generally wayy more interested in animals than people) - enjoy. Whenever my clients are having issues with anxiety or sleeplessness, I always check in on caffeine intake. It may seem obvious, but for many people, the habit of coffee/ energy drinks/ tea has become second nature and they often aren't aware of the effects this caffeine is having on their central nervous system and their ex...periences. A simple reduction in this habit may be worth trialling. Consider replacements like warm water & lemon, decaf tea or coffee, cacao (some cocoas have caffeine added to them so cacao is better). If you need a hit still, try some therapeutic grade peppermint oil - it has stimulant effects similar to caffeine but messes less with your nervous system (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30087294). Sleep hygienists recommend no caffeine after 12pm for anyone having difficulty with sleep. For my clients with anxiety trouble, I encourage reducing caffeine to a minimum, whilst at the same time becoming acutely aware to its individual effects and using this awareness at times of distress. Having caffeine as an explanation for negative bodily sensations for example, can be helpful instead of feeling like your body is out of your control.

23.01.2022 Reflection place this afternoon. Even if it's not by a camp-fire in an idyllic location like this, find your space to reflect. Not to overthink. .. To reflect is to drift yet focus on something that has been gnawing away at you. You may not find resolve or a concusion on the issue. This is okay. ... 22.01.2022 Social comparison is evolutionarily preprogrammed into us to drive us to be better and outperform potential mating competitors. But this ain't a mating game any more... Humams have applied this to everything from our salaries, to our body shape to the likes we get on Insta from. a. photo!!! Comparison is unavoidable. ... Embrace it but in a healthy way. Let go of perceptions. Look up to peers and be inspired by them not define yourself negatively in their shadow. Accept yourself the way you are.

21.01.2022 Get them started on the mindful tasks early... Anyone know the number of beads on a mandala necklace, a simple mindfulness tool? ... . . .... . . . . . . . . . So, according to traditional Buddhism, 108 represents the number of mortal desires of mankind which one must overcome to achieve Nirvana. This guy has got no idea about any of that. 21.01.2022 "What could you dream yourself doing if you didn't set a negative narrative to the life you are creating?" I'm in this process at the moment... creating and building some programs that are going to be accessible more broadly outside of the therapy room. These words leapt out to me as I enter the challenge of facing my own limiting beliefs...

17.01.2022 "make sure you proactively resent yourself for not living up to your own potential"... (please don't)... I'll put this is not-sarcastic presentation form for those of you who don't like JP or don't like sarcasm: Don't get up in the morning and..... - check your phone - eat sugary breakfasts - don't drink water - replace breakfast with crappy coffee - check your phone - resent yourself for staying up late the night before watching something you don't really care about - start your day with disharmony in your relationships - check your phone - avoid your partner - watch the news - focus on what you don't have.

16.01.2022 To continue along the anger topic... This is a well used and valuable CBT mindhack. Should- statements can create cognitive pressure and emotional distress. They are often automatic, and are quickly relied on in times of stress when the brain is seeking shortcuts to balanced Wise thought processes. Though not always, should- statements also are often seen in those who had strict upbringings or religious beginnings where definitive rules to life were applied. "He should want ...to spend more time with me" "They should look in the wing mirror!" "I should be able to be do x y z by now" "I shouldn't feel x y z" "I shouldn't have said that" Instead, try replacing the 'should' with 'I would like' and notice how that feels today. Be kind to yourself . . . . .. . . . . . . #psychologytricks #psychologytip #psychology #CBT #shouldstatements #counselling #frustration #anger #compassion

14.01.2022 People!!! I dont get much political. I hold views but I dont often feel the necessity to share. Then I fell into a thread this weekend on the #BREONNATAYLOR and #BLM commentary.... in a group of psychologists. Oh. My. God. Ok, I'm out of the loop I'll admit. I dont watch the news. Some of you may have been neck deep in this vitriole for a while. I haven't... ... I'm horrified by the outcome of the Breonna police fake trial as I'm sure everyone here is but that's not what I'm here for. Right now. People! Whether you are a brown Jesus, a white sheep, a black sheep, a rainbow sheep or would prefer to identify as a fucking pizza get your shit together! Stop fighting and bickering over who in the world is worse off and how everyone isn't doing enough to support your cause. Get on your soapboxes people, please! Raise your fist and be the change. Drop your expectations though that everyone will and should do the same. Some might. Some might not. Everyone stands for their causes differently... some give a dollar to a homeless person, some build houses for them. Accept and embrace this difference as we can embrace every. Single. Living. Human. Being. On. Earth. Peace people. Love your neighbour already - even if they're only a social media neighbour.
12.01.2022 push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the ...sun rise. push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable. lie in your garden, feel the sunshine on your skin. get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else. stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything. buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice. buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small. strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. wash, then hang them in the sunshine with care. make your bed in full. dig your fingers into the earth, plant a seed. see your success as it grows everyday. organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle. breathe. practice your deep breathing. ground yourself. have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck. push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog. message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through. think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything. become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. help an animal. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends. lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you... 11.01.2022 Connection to Country... What does this mean to you? Maybe it has cultural meaning to you- maybe personal. Mine is wherever ocean meets the sand. ... This guy just spent 2 hours crying and sickly through a car trip and as soon as his feet touched sand and he breathed the ocean air, his perky self is back. Find those places that ground you. That make you feel implicitly 'home'. And surround yourself with them whenever you can.

We'll be ch...atting about all the things, but expect some of this... - How I discovered that I needed to fix myself and work on my healing first and foremost - Rebuilding trust with myself, and listening to my intuition once again - Discovering that my children's behaviour was often being mirrored from my own unhealed and unprocessed pain - Consciously changing learned behaviours and patterns from own childhood - Breaking free from fear, conditioning and 'what others think. - Using the triggers as guides to heal my inner child - Healing my co-dependency with my husband and becoming more deeply connected than ever before - Learning to 'do the work', but still live in joy and happiness - Finally making peace with me and unbecoming everything I thought that I was supposed to be... And all the incredible wisdom and teachings that will come from the awesome Dr Nicole LePera. I will be sharing some info on my upcoming book too and some exciting things I have in store for you! Come and say hi - I can't wait to hang with you! Susy x

03.01.2022 The last stand of a narcissist losing his power. "Narcissism can be described as a grandiose sense of self-importance. A healthy dose of narcissism can be an integral part of a mature adult’s psyche. It can foster positive traits such as confidence, creativity, humour and wisdom. These are of course important qualities thatmany of the world’s genius artists, business people and scientists possess.... But there’s a flip side to this coin, since pathological narcissism may leave people extremely isolated, distrustful and lacking in empathy. Perceived threats can easily cause pathological narcissists to fall into fits of rage." Applebaum, 2021 Concordia University

01.01.2022 As racial tensions rise around the world, as a caring and reflective white therapists I've begun wondering, "How do I help more? Where do I start? How do I not make things worse?" We mental health professionals have a fundamental responsibility to support equality, but many white clinicians don’t know what or how to make a difference. Do I bring politics into the therapy room? Will I trigger a client if I ask about how world events are affecting them right now? Am I missi...ng a valuable therapeutic opportunity by avoiding such questions and conversations? The reality is that we have a duty to have these conversation and dive into them whenever the client wants to. To avoid the undercurrents and influences of the stolen generations on our own First Nation people is an injustice in itself to the work that we do and the clients that we serve. I have been priveleged to work with so many Australian Indigenous clients over the past years, most recently here on the Gold Coast with close ongoing ties to Kalwun Health Service. I created my private practice on a business model designed to create access for everyone, regardless of their race or financial status. I uphold my pledge to do this delving into the murky waters of privelege and pain as I do so. #psychology #psychologyinpractice #firstnations #aboriginalaustralia #blackhistory #equality #equalityforall #socialjustice #blackmonday #soapbox #stepup #goldcoast #australia
