24.01.2022 Stains in your pool must be without a doubt one of the most painful things any pool owner must face. It is extremely important to understand the diverse types of stains and which remover is necessary for that specific stain. Stains broadly fall into four categories. Organic stains (commonly yellow, green and/or brown,) metal stains (yellow through to brown and black spot,) Oxidation of fibreglass/ painted surface as well as scale. If your still unsure on what kind of stain your pool has, feel free to take a photo and come visit us instore. We’ll help you with the correct remover as well as free advice on how we can stop this problem recurring.

24.01.2022 Has your pool cleaner stopped working? Systems running but cleaners not moving? There is a very high chance that your diaphragm has a split or has been damaged in the process of cleaning. It is completely normal and diaphragm breaks can be quite regular depending on what kind of sticks or rocks make their way into your pool. So, check your diaphragm and if its damaged it will need to be replaced. If you’re unsure of how to remove the diaphragm, please feel free to bring the cleaning unit instore and we can change it on the spot for you.

24.01.2022 Pool blankets are an easy yet affordable way to maintain your swimming pool and save money in the process. First things first, pool blankets are awesome at keeping your pool warm and they can even add up to a month extra on either side of the swimming season. More swim time means less time your pool is inactive and less time telling the kids it’s too cold to swim! Having a cover obviously, stop the sun from evaporating as much water from your pool as it normally would. Howeve...r, it also stops all those expensive chemicals you put in from evaporating too, meaning more money back in your pocket! Not only does it keep things in, but it also keeps all the leaf matter you would normally get in your pool, out of the pool. This reduces phosphates getting into your pool, reduces the chance of flow blockages and allows your system to run efficiently and keep your pool clean! See more

23.01.2022 Keeping your pH balanced is a must if you want that enjoyable swim experience for your pool. On the pH scale, zero indicates extreme acidity, 14 indicates extreme alkalinity and 7 indicates a neutral state. For a swimming pool, recommended pH levels are 7.2-7.6. If the water is below 7.2 it is too acidic and will start to cause corroding of metal equipment, etching on surface materials and skin irritation. If the water is too alkaline, it can cause scaling on the pool surface and other pool equipment (i.e. plumbing) and can cloud the water. In addition to this, outside that pH range chlorine starts to become nowhere near as efficient, wasting more of your money. So, if you want to make sure you’re not wasting money or if you have suspicions your pH is out, come in for a free water test and we’ll have your pH back where it needs to be!

23.01.2022 Cyanuric acid is fundamental to reduce some of the harsh costs that come with owning your own pool. It acts like a sunscreen and inhibits the dissipation of chlorine from your pool by coagulating the chlorine particles together. This allows your chlorine to stay in the pool and do its job for twice as long.

23.01.2022 Obviously, a swimming pool has chemical requirements to keep it clean. It’s important to keep all the chemicals within those requirements so that first you’re not wasting money, your pool is staying clean and you have an enjoyable swimming experience! In store, we offer FREE water testing on a sample of your pool water. This will allow us to accurately determine what chemicals your pool needs more/ less of, as well as being able to keep a database of your samples to notice any issues that are trending with your pool.

23.01.2022 Alkalinity is a large factor in keeping your pool unharmed and clean. When it comes to swimming pools we are mainly concerned with bi-carbonate alkalinity which should be between 80-120ppm. Consistent alkaline levels will prevent rapid pH changes and helps to stabilise pH levels. However, if it is too low marbelite and plaster pool walls will become etched, metals will corrode, the pool's walls and floor can stain, the water can turn green, eyes burn and the pH can be much harder to manage. If it’s too high, the pH again is difficult to adjust, the water becomes cloudy and the chlorine loses its efficiency. It is important to regularly check your pools alkalinity, so come visit us in store for a free test of a pool sample. We’ll have your alkalinity back where it needs to be and your pool back to how you want it to be.

22.01.2022 Build up on your chlorinators salt cell over time can seriously affect its performance levels and in turn your pool. If you leave the calcium buildup it will affect flow rates through the cell, severely affecting the electrolysis process and in turn, possibly lead to a salt cell failure (money you don't need to spend.) Cleaning of your salt cell is quite a simple process in which you just need to submerge your salt cell in corrosive/ acidic liquid like our salt cell cleaner product. It only takes a few minutes before you can see the results, but also only a few weeks before you're getting money back in your pocket.

22.01.2022 Making sure that you have safe chemical storing for your pool shed is very important. Pools chemicals are generally either a corrosive, flammable or oxidising liquid/ solid. It is important to understand how storing these together can become an issue for your family’s safety. If not stored correctly oxidising materials, such as chlorine, are likely to easily react to burnable chemicals like your hydrochloric acid or anything like petrol, hydrogen and ethanol. Hydrochloric acid is an example of a corrosive chemical. A corrosive chemical has the capability to chew other materials and break them down. It even has the capability to damage metal, so imagine how drastic it could be if it were to react and spread. So, it’s very important to understand the importance of safe chemical storing so you can ensure your families safety.

20.01.2022 Backwashing regularly is one of the most important things to remember when It comes to pool maintenance. Backwashing a filter automatically uses your pool water to cleanse all the sand/ glass in the filter. This subsequently removing any dirt or debris from the filter out your backwash line. Failing to backwash regularly will result in a large amount of dirt/ debris accumulating within the filter, which can lead to lots of silt circulating your system and a loss of pressure i...n your flow rate. A combination of these will make it almost impossible to keep your pool clean. When backwashing, make sure you turn off your system before rotating the multiport valve (on top of the filter) to the backwash line. Once there you may turn the system back on and let it run for about 60-90 seconds. You are then required to turn the system off, adjust valve to rinse and turn on for a further 30 seconds. Once complete, turn the power off and flick it back over to filter. Keeping on top of this and backwashing once a fortnight will keep your pool sparkling! See more

17.01.2022 Each state in Australia has its own fence regulations that need to be met depending on the state in which you live in. Not complying with these regulations can not only incur fines but also bring serious safety hazards to your pool that could affect you or your children’s health.

16.01.2022 Salt in your swimming salt-water pool is an essential if you want to keep your pool sterilised and swimmable. The salt you put into your pool goes into a salt water chlorination process that uses those dissolved salt as a store for your chlorination system. Your salt cell uses a process called electrolysis to produce chlorine for your pool. Not enough salt means not enough chlorine which consequently turns your pool green. It is important to understand the system you have. All chlorinators have a different ppm salt requirement. So along with correct system knowledge and regular salt addition when required, you will be able to keep your pool disinfectants doing their job!

15.01.2022 There are a variety of different algaecides on the market all of which have a different purpose for different algae. It is important to make sure your using the correct algaecide otherwise it could harm your pool. For instance, if you already have high metals in your pool and you were to use a metal based algaecide, depending on the quality of your chlorine, it could turn all the walls of your pool black. If you’re unsure of which algaecide to use, please come visit us instore for a free water sample and consult!

14.01.2022 Trevors Tuesday Tip, Vaccum the floor and Brush Walls Regularly to keep your pool looking pristine.

14.01.2022 If you’re not lucky enough to own a sand filter then, unfortunately, you’re going to have the unrelenting hassle of having to clean your cartridge filter. Sand filters have the ability to backwash, which allows them to automatically clean their filter using the pool water. Unfortunately, cartridges need to be removed from their filter position and hosed down to be cleaned effectively. Regular cleaning, about once a fortnight, will mean that your cartridge filter will perform affectively and keep your pool nice and clean.

13.01.2022 Chlorine is the main agent that efficiently acts as a disinfectant for your pool. When it is added to water it breaks down into two chemicals. One that kills bacteria almost instantly and the other stays in the water killing any bacteria that might later enter the pools (from bathers/ runoff etc.) This Is why it’s so important in any pool, because it keeps the water clean and kills any harmful bacteria. Harmful bacteria that if your chlorine is too low, could cause your pool ...to start going green, murky, cloudy and seriously speed up algae growth. High chlorine will make a very uncomfortable swim for the bather, causing skin irritation, eye irritation and possibly asthma. It can also lower the effect of the pH, making it more acidic and possibly affecting the pool. If your pools looking a little bit green or cloudy, that’s okay it might just need something to sterilise the water. So come in and see us, we’ll have your pool sparkling again in no time. See more

12.01.2022 Pool chemicals can be very harmful if not used appropriately. Unfortunately, to maintain a clear and sparkling pool, we are required to use a variety of corrosive and flammable liquids. Don’t let these chemicals get the better of you! Make sure when you're adding chemicals to the pool that you take care and use P.P.E if necessary.

12.01.2022 Plenty of pool chemicals are either corrosive, flammable/ explosive, oxidising and/or toxic. As a result of this, it is very important to make sure that you are storing all of your chemicals safely and securely. Not only is storing them safely a requirement, but you also have to make sure that you have appropriate distances between chemicals whilst they’re stored. Chemicals stored too close together, i.e. chlorine and Hydrochloric Acid, can have a serious reaction in the right environment. Your pump room is the perfect environment, so make sure you store your chemicals safe!

11.01.2022 Unfortunately here in Australia, we are faced with some tough weather conditions. Conditions that really mess with our swimming pools! Large rain and runoff will not only mean you need more chemicals but also might leave the bottom of your pool with a sediment so fine it can’t be filtered out. To fix this issue we must initially ensure that the water level is above the skimmer box. After then turning your system off, you can rotate the multiport valve on your filter to waste. After turning the system back on, you’re ready to vacuum straight out the waste line. You will need to vacuum slowly to ensure you don’t stir up all the sediment. If your pool still isn’t how you would like it, you may need to repeat these steps a couple of times until you get the desired result.

10.01.2022 Some products that you add into the pool can also cause a reverse reaction to some of your other pool chemicals. The main one that people don’t understand is in relation to pH buffer. When your adding your pH buffer to raise your alkalinity between 80-120ppm you need to be careful with the affect that could also have on your pH. So be careful when adding chemicals and don’t forget every action has a reverse reaction.

09.01.2022 Unfortunately in Australia, our pools can face some pretty tough conditions. In conjunction with irregular water balancing and pool maintenance, over the years our pools can become susceptible to damage. If you notice your pool water constantly dropping and you’re regularly topping it up with the hose, there is a very high chance it’s damaged or cracked. This can be quite an expensive process if you're regularly adding water and subsequently more chemicals. So, it’s important to fix it quickly. If you’ve noticed your water levels dropping rapidly please give us a call so we can get leak detection on the job!

07.01.2022 Unfortunately the chemicals that are used to keep a pool clean, even once diluted can be quite damaging to a bather with sensitive skin. Yes, generally if you have your pool balanced correctly, it shouldn’t irritate your eyes or skin. But unfortunately for some with sensitive skin this is not the case. Fortunately, there is a way around this. There is a product called lithium hypochlorite, which acts as a substitute for chlorine. Lithium Hypochlorite is much softer on the skin and allows a much more comfortable swim for a bather with sensitive skin.

07.01.2022 As most pool owners should know, the salt cell on your chlorinator is what produces chlorine for your pool. In the process of doing this, it also creates that lovely calcium build-up on the cell that needs to be constantly monitored and removed with cell cleaner (unless you have a self-cleaning cell.) If you have just got your cell out ready to clean only to notice you’ve run out of cell cleaner, don’t worry Trevor has got your back. A perfect temporarily substitute is some hydrochloric acid! Just leave your cell submerged in some for a minute and it’ll be completely clean and ready to rock!

06.01.2022 Air leaks anywhere in your pool maintenance/ cleaning systems can play a large factor in why you might be spending lots of money on keeping your pool clear. Air leaks can not only affect the system from doing its job correctly but also bring serious harm to a system as well. So make sure to regularly check your entire system, including hoses, pumps, chlorinators etc. Listen out for unusual noises and beat the issue before it beats you!

06.01.2022 Phosphates in your pool can come from several various sources. It can come from vegetation (leaves/dirt,) other water runoff, fertilisers and animal droppings. It is detrimental to keep your phosphates below 400ppm because the phosphates act as a food source for algae. The higher the phosphates the higher the chance your pool will go green. Making sure you regularly remove leaf matter from your pool, minimising any run off and solving any animal issues (i.e ducks) will also help you heavily reduce your phosphate levels.

06.01.2022 If you're not making sure that your pump/ skimmer baskets are empty, you're creating a lot of efficiency issues for your pump. Making sure they're clean, means that there's no obstruction in the water flow and your system is running as it should. So make sure to check your baskets regularly!

06.01.2022 For a swimming pool, the calcium content is referred to as calcium hardness. It’s detrimental to the protection of your pool to keep calcium hardness within its 200-400ppm requirements as levels outside this range can be extremely unstable. High calcium levels can cause problems with cloudy water and cause scale issues on the surface of your pool. However, low-calcium in your pool water is also of great concern. Low levels make the water quite aggressive, to the point where i...t will remove calcium from plaster in order to satisfy its need for the mineral. If the pool is vinyl or fibreglass, the low calcium water will attack metal fittings and heat exchangers resulting in corrosion of the fittings or pinhole leaks in the heater. In exchange, you may also be left with some additionally unattractive stains. Don’t let these levels fluctuate and your pool will be your best friend! See more

04.01.2022 Pools are much easier and more affordable if you look after them, keep them clean and prevent from going green! Maintaining a pool regular will mean that you will only use chemicals as required and you will be adding insignificant amounts at a time. Adding substantial amounts to rapidly sterilise a pool can be quite a daunting and pricey process. Dumping chemicals in a big mass can affect other pool chemicals and could end up causing you to put more chemicals in to rebalance it again. When adding chemicals, it’s always best to do it slowly and spaced out so you can capitalise on the chemicals, remove as many variables in the water balancing process as possible and keep your money in your pocket as opposed to in the pool.

04.01.2022 Metals can be present in your pool water and can play a detrimental part in the downfall of your pool. Metals can be brought into your pool by runoff, pool filling and metals in the plumbing/ old pipework. The copper and iron specifically, are known to be caused by the corrosion of metal fixtures, pools pump, heater and any old metal pipework. Spotting metals in your pool is quite easy because you’ll notice the colour go either green, brown or purple/ black.

03.01.2022 Leaf debris in your pool, can and will impact your pool if you don't remove it regularly. Leaves and sticks can block up all of your equipment and stop it from working correctly. It can cause loss of suction, stop your cleaner from working and cause your pool to go green. Leaf matter also excretes phosphates into your pool which will feed the algae and cause it to go greener quicker. So don't forget to get your pool scoop and remove any unwanted matter in your pool.

02.01.2022 Queensland has a large list of regulations when it comes to pool safety. These regulations include new, old and modified old regulations all of which are important to keep up to date. One of the most important regulations that people don’t even know about is that you must obtain a CPR poster within your pool area, for obvious reasons. If your regulations aren’t up to date, or if you just got a pool and you’re unsure of the next step, get in touch with us and we’ll link you up with a pool safety inspector.
