13.01.2022 Lawn armyworms have hatched in plague proportions with the arrival of the monsoon, and are affecting new lawns and old lawns alike. Some eggs have come with new turf, other infestations have come from moths flying in from surrounding grass areas, selecting lawns that are lush and high in nitrogen. Unfortunately the egg stage has no effective control measures, and it is extremely difficult to find the eggs laid deep in the grass.A couple of weeks after egg laying, thousands of... small caterpillars hatch out, hide in the base of the lawn, come up at night and eat the leaves off the grass.AS they grow bigger, they eat more each night until the new leaves are unable to keep up with the feeding.Worst damage is always in the shaded areas where they eat for a few more hours before the sun sends them down again.Lawn looks dead, but recovers quickly once sprayed with a suitable insecticide. There are a number of suitable insecticides that are labelled to kill armyworms, be sure that this application is on the label of the chemical that you are using, sometimes the active ingredient is the right one , but the concentration is too low to kill that particular pest. Suitable active ingredients are Bifenthrin, Chlorpyrifos, triclorfon, carbaryl, pyrethrim. The safest to use is a bio-insecticide called Dipel, which is a naturally occurring bacterium. See more

06.01.2022 Parklands project raises roof Installation of the Munro Martin Parklands stage roof will begin today as the final pieces of the puzzle come together. Constructi...on on the project is more than complete, with the almost two story, 14m x 18m stage one of the major components. Mayor Bob Manning said that the opening celebrations would showcase the full capabilities of this versatile new inner city venue. We will be featuring local, national and international entertainment for the Cairns community as part of the Munro Martin Parklands opening, Cr Manning said. The first community event - A Night in the Parklands - on Saturday 13 August is not to be missed, showcasing some of the best of the Australian performing arts and featuring the very talented Kate Miller-Heidke. Along with a majority of the planned events, this will be a free community celebration, however guests will be required to book tickets through TicketLink to avoid disappointment as space at the park is limited. This will truly be an historic event for the Cairns community, he said. The night will also a great line-up of local acts, activities for the whole family and an excerpt of The Sleeping Beauty performed by The Australian Ballets Dance Education Ensemble followed by a performance by Biddigal Performing Arts developed as part of The Australian Ballet in schools brought to you by Samsung. Governor of Queensland, His Excellency The Honourable Paul de Jersey is confirmed to attend the official opening event on 19 August featuring Opera Queenslands production, Gioacchino Rossinis The Barber of Saville. It will be an honour to have His Excellency Paul De Jersey on hand to help us mark completion of the first in a string of major developments across the city, Cr Manning said. The official opening is also a ticketed, free event and a unique opportunity to enjoy the opera at an outdoor venue. Similar to Carols by Candlelight, guests are encouraged to bring along a rug or chair to sit on, and a picnic with food and drink also available for purchase at the venue, he said. The Munro Martin Parklands project is one of many major projects underway in Cairns, providing a dramatic entry statement to our city and an attractive backdrop to the Cairns Performing Arts Centre, currently under construction. This is a significant time in Cairns, with major international events like the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and Cairns Airport Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns wrapping up, and the NQ Games, Spirit of ANZAC Centenary Experience and Cairns Festival set to explode over the coming months, he said. It is a perfect time to celebrate our flourishing community and continue pushing forward for an economically sustainable Cairns. 02.01.2022 Buffalo is highly suited and extensively used. It loves clay soils , dynamic lifter and regular watering. It has good shade tolerance , is ok for wear and is easy is to mow . Downside is that it is the first to dry out and quickly turns brown from August through to December . However , it responds to rainfall and recovers well , and out competes weeds.
