25.01.2022 Hi all. I thought I would take this opportunity to put up these 2 images up for the facebook family capturing some special moments where you see the real pleasure that our guests have on the tours. We have been delivering tours close enough to eight years under our ownership. In that time Tropical Horizons Tours has grown enormously in the period from just any other business in early 2006, to a now fully fledged niche professional touring company. This expansion from ea...rly 2006 to November 2013 , included moving into a central , dedicated modern environmentally certified coach deport with modern offices, 24 hours reservation support , opportunities for administration and reservation staff to be TAFE trained in office management , commitment to ensuring the guiding / driving staff had industry accredited training to Certificate IV or Wet Tropics Certification and a program of renewal of the fleet by a suite of safe and modern Euro IV or 5 compliant vehicles , and finally offering new and different tour options and places than just the standard offerings . Tropical Horizons Tours has as some will be aware now been successfully sold to another lead Far North Queensland touring company, namely Down Under Tours Pty Ltd; they will have the full management and control of the business from 1 November 2013. We have every confidence that our past and future clients will be equally satisfied with the Down Under Tours Group management, who also has their focus, like we did, on professionalism, client satisfaction, management accountability, and modernity of operations as their business focus. We wish them well for the future. Thank to you all, for your wonderful support over the years (and ‘friending us on facebook. With a heavy heart, we bid you farewell. Warm regards, Ted & the THT team. See more

23.01.2022 Well looks at this for good luck and a bit of good management Jason (one of our most experienced Tropical Horizons Tours guides) has a real love for nature & a real way with all animals he managed to successfully coax this massive Cassowary inside for a selfie’; and then worried about the Cassowary’s safety, whipped up a sign to protect it from any wayward drivers and pedestrians in case they were not keeping a proper lookout for them. Well done Jason you may be even heading for success as the local Cassowary Award winner this year lol . Keep up the outstanding work- all part of Tropical Horizons and your own Eco Tourism Australia Credentials!!!

21.01.2022 This amazing bird is called the Jabiru, Black-necked Stork or commonly called by its nickname the Policeman bird. It gets its nickname from the way it stands perfectly still. The Jabiru is the largest wetland bird in Australia. It is 1.4m tall, thanks to its long legs, and has a wing-span longer than two metres . It inhabits wetlands, floodplains and areas with large swamps and pools of water. Occasionally individuals will stray into open grass, woodland or flooded paddocks in search of food. The birds are quite secretive nesting in isolated pairs and bond for several years. The amazing Jabiru , can sometimes be seen on our full day tour experiences, where we may be closer to their habitat. So ask your guide to keep an extra close eye out for you.

21.01.2022 There are plenty of birds on the Daintree River at this time of the year ( which can be seen on our river cruise on our Cape Tribulation Tour and our Daintree Tour ) this pretty image of the Azure Kingfisher is a great shot and this pretty little bird can be found regularly on the Daintree River most days darting in and out of the river banks . They prefer shade and overhanging trees where it can fish from these perches, diving headlong into the water. It characteristical...ly bobs its head as it watches for prey. The actual zone where these birds can be found is between the east coast of Far North Queensland, between Cairns and Princess Charlotte Bay, & that of New Guinea. Their Habitat includes the banks of vegetated creeks, lakes, swamps, tidal estuaries and mangroves. Often difficult to see until it darts from a perch above water. They feed on freshwater yabbies and small fish and they nest in a chambers up to 1 metre long in an earthen creek bank. Their singing voice is a high-pitched- we can be sure you will see one of these pretty creatures when on tour. See more

19.01.2022 Hi - thought we would let you know there are some pretty regular and plentiful sightings of wildlife on the Daintree River - particularly as it being our Winter time and all - 26 or 27 degrees lol - yes that's our Winter !! ....... here are some of our guests getting an eyeful of croc coming out of the water to bask in the warm rays of sunshine this week on our Cape Tribulation Tour - come here and share the sunshine rays in FNQ ----with or without the Croc if you prefer .

19.01.2022 Looks can be deceiving....... In the eyes of the people of the tropical regions of either the Americas, or Africa, this is a very pretty & beautiful native flower called Lantana. However in Australia, it is considered a noxious weed and is recognised as a Weed of National Significance, because of its destructive impacts on primary industries, conservation, and biodiversity, including the sheer extent of its pervasive distribution. Lantana was introduced into Australia as ...an ornamental plant in 1841, and by the 1860s, it was naturalised in both Sydney and Brisbane areas. This innocent garden plant, has since escaped and thrived under the favourable tropical, sub-tropical & temperate conditions of eastern Australia. This is a great example of the importance of species remaining in their natural ecosystems, (where they have an important and job to do) , but they unnaturally thrive for all the wrong reasons in other ecosystem like here in Australia. Looks can be very deceiving!!!!! See more

19.01.2022 We were all very lucky just the other day on our ‘Waterfalls Southern Tablelands Tour’ to spot the very rare and endemic Victoria's Riflebird- (the bird is named after the British Queen Victoria) at the Curtain Fig Tree section of the National Park on the Atherton Tablelands. This amazing bird is one of only 12 bird species endemic to the Wet Tropics region and is but one of four birds-of-paradise native to Australia. If you are lucky enough to see these birds during the... breeding season from early September to February you may see the male (like in the picture above) doing the mating display. Males attract females by their fascinating display of throwing up their rounded wings either side of their up stretched head and neck, swaying from side to side and bobbing up and down. While they do this, they flick their head from the edge of one wing to the edge of the other. They also make a loud single and explosive ‘yah’ call. They are magnificent so here is hoping he returns to the area soon. See more

13.01.2022 Come and visit our Cairns Highlands (or better known as The Atherton Tablelands). The picture is that of what is known as the Seven Sisters which are a series of unusual volcanic mounds. They are old cinder cone volcanoes and were caused by interaction of rising magma with groundwater, & an explosion of gases. Particles of liquid magma were ejected several hundred metres into the air, cooling during the flight to rain down as very light pebbles. The highest parts of the Seven Sisters and the big brother of them all is Mt Quincan. Ask our driver guide to point them out to you on our Waterfalls / Southern Tablelands Tour and see if you can find all 7 of the Sisters.

12.01.2022 Hi Fives all round on the suspension bridge at Mossman Gorge. Well here you all are ---as promised your 15 seconds of fame on the internet lol . This was a great group on our Cape Tribulation & Daintree Tour this Thursday. They certainly knew how to spell the word FUN when they were experiencing their tour with us. With 28 C degree days, and overnight temperatures around 17 C degrees, why would you not be celebrating!! This is THE best time to visit us in Cairns and Port Douglas areas come and experience this country for yourselves- enjoy the balmy evenings, and the warm days to go out and explore the amazing natural wonders that the region offers. Come on, just 3 hours flight from Melbourne, 3 hours from Sydney and only 2 hours from Brisbane your cold aching bones from Winter deserve it. See you soon.

12.01.2022 The estuarine (Salt Water) Crocodile is the largest of reptiles. They have survived unchanged for over 200 million years. They pre date the Dinosaurs which became extinct a mere 65 million years ago. The pic below shows a croc attempting to capture its prey it has the strongest closing motion of any animal on earth & the highest bite force ever recorded for any animal in a laboratory setting. It was able to apply a bite force value of 3,700 lbf (16,000 Newtons.) WOW. Here a...re some amazing facts about these true surviving Dinosaurs. Rocks & stones swallowed by crocs may aid their digestion, as well as helping them keep balance in the water. When opening its mouth, a crocodile can seal the back of its throat to avoid gulping water. Underwater, a special transparent eyelid covers the crocodile eyes for protection. As much as 50 to 70% of food a crocodile eats is converted into flesh & energy. In humans, this applies to only 3 to 4 per cent. This means crocodiles can survive for months without eating. Opening its mouth while basking in the sun prevents a crocs brain from overheating while its body continues to absorb heat. Crocs have no vocal chords. Growls are made by snorting air through the back of their throats or nostrils. Large Crocs can stay underwater for at least an hour by dropping their heart rate to 2 to 3 beats per minute to conserve energy. Come and see them for yourself in their natural habitat The Daintree River and its estuaries. See more

10.01.2022 Exciting News! The new Tropical Horizons Tours website is now live! Check it out, book some tours, explore our beautiful region!

09.01.2022 A fascinating part of visiting Cairns & Port Douglas are to see the sugar cane farms and the extremely narrow gauge cane railway - one of the world's most exciting variety of modern narrow gauge railway systems [nineteen 610mm (2ft) gauge, and one 1067mm (3ft 6ins) gauge only ] that connect the processing sugar mills with where the cane is grown. The mills are to be found as far north as Mossman area south of the Daintree River. The railway systems is to transport the freshl...y harvested cane to the mill for processing as soon as possible, preferably within 12-18 hours and definitely within 24 hours. The work goes on 24 hours a day and 7 days a week during the crushing season which runs for around 20 weeks or so each year. The scale of the railways is remarkable. There is approximately 4,000 kilometres of track, 3,000 kilometres is main line, transporting 36 million tonnes of sugar cane each season. The season runs from about June/July to November/December. The longest run to a mill is 119 km !! and the average distance is about 35 km. Trains run at 40 km/h and can haul up to 2000 tonnes and be up to one kilometre in length. These trains are regularly sighted on our tours at this time of year. Ask our guide to pull over for a photograph next to one when you are on tour with us. See more

07.01.2022 Hi THT Facebook friends we hope to see you soon in FNQ land these good looking guests were all having such a knock out time at the new Mossman Gorge National Park, a few were even knocked off their feet ---- and were still all smiles I think seriously one or two of them just liked the camera actually lol !!!!! Our excellent sunshine at the moment, and really warm days now 30 C , are peaking right now so get to it real quick and make the most of the reliable Spring sunshine thorough to late October (and the calmer blue waters on the Reef when not on the land) Come and say hi to us friendly folk in Far North Queensland we are waiting with a nice smile for you too and icy cool beer if that is your thing at the end of the day .

06.01.2022 Australia’s World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforests boasts some of the most beautiful and perfumed flowers in the world- like this amazing pencil orchid, which we have been seeing regularly on the Daintree River Cruise ( either the Cape Tribulation Tour or Daintree Dreamtime Tours) . Orchids are hardy plants, which flourish in both the lowland and highland rainforests of Tropical North Queensland. In fact, these rainforests are home to over 230 different orchid species which represents approximately 30% of Australia’s total orchid population. Now that's pretty impressive, so come and see some of them soon for yourself .

03.01.2022 The Wet Tropics is not only rich in natural diversity, it also has an amazing history in a wide range of areas like the Historical town of Yungaburra, located on the Atherton Tablelands. This quaint town has 18 national heritage-listed buildings, which makes the town the largest national trust village in Queensland. The picture of the church is called St Patrick's, built in 1914 , and also The Lake Eacham Hotel ( called a pub in Australia ) and is one of many heritage listed buildings you can see when we drive you around the town showing you some of these amazing quaint buildings, outlining the rich history of the town on our picturesque Waterfalls Tour. Ask your guide to stop for a quick picture of these quaint relics from the Aussie past.

03.01.2022 There are some nice times to be had with the folks, Richard and Peter, at The Daintree Tea House just near the Daintree Village on our Daintree Dreamtime Tour ( Tour 2) . Richard is shown here doing his thing with his fruit talk and presentations it never fails to impress- our guests all compliment him on his knowledge and the way he takes time to share it with you . There are so many wonderful tropical fruits (capotes, dragon fruits, rambutans , jack fruit , mangoes etc) and varieties- some of which are grown on their own orchard on the property. They provide small samples of tastings during the sit down lunch as you can see here more of the special place we call home on FNQ

03.01.2022 Hi we thought you would be interested in this story about a man called Cameron Buchanan. Cameron is both a guide, and also a resident artist at the Mossman Gorge Centre. You can meet Cameron on our full day tour called Daintree Dreamtime Tour (Tour Code 2ND) see http://tropicalhorizonstours.com.au/site/daintree/. Cameron is a man who has experienced an interesting journey in terms of finding his ‘feet’ and after many attempts has now found a special place in being one of th...e chosen story tellers at the new Centre . Cameron is member of the Kuku Yalanji tribe- the Indigenous inhabitants which stretches from Cooktown in the north to Chillagoe in the west and Port Douglas in the South. In their words,‘ Kuku Yalanji are true rainforest people who live in harmony with the environment. They are part of it and it is part of them. Their culture has always involved a deep respect for nature and an intimate knowledge of its cycles. To them Mossman Gorge is a very special place...its water, its rainforests and its mountains hold many stories...Traditional dance performances and artefact displays portray their rich cultural heritage. Cameron’s story is one of perseverance, courage and a glowing example of how much impact a support network can have on an Individual’s success. Come and see the new Mossman Gorge Centre on our tours and the other Kulki Yalanji team who you will discover there. See more
