25.01.2022 Time to get our playground ready for next year Seeking support from our local businesses and families for any materials that will help us create a nature playground! Some inspiration below! Do you have any fallen down or dead trees that need clearing? We love to have them Also needing sand and ‘soft fall’ material such as mulch/wood chips as pictured. Please message me if you have (or know of anyone) that may have something to contribute.

25.01.2022 CHSS had their Winter Solstice tonight (longest day/darkest night tonight) and it was so beautiful! The children sang songs in beautiful harmony as they walked around a large spiral made up of palm fronds towards the centre. Here they light their candle, along with a spiral ground candle. It is a reminder that even on our darkest night, our inner lights shine brightly The handmade lanterns that each child makes are also very special

25.01.2022 What a beautiful, amazing way to practice meditation and mindfulness!!! We LVE your work Jon Foreman: Sculpt The World #incredibleart #art #nature #artinnature #pebbleart

25.01.2022 Here is a fantastic resource to have at home if you have young children!! Love it!! Covers everything! Simple to follow and great, fun ideas to implement in the home. Great timing now it’s the holidays! See if your local bookstore can order before buying online

25.01.2022 The beautiful, passionate and wise Sarah Lees-Barton talking permaculture and the importance of teaching our children from the grass roots. She runs the Kitchen Garden program at the Noosa Steiner School and is also one of my best friends. Her passion is infectious. Take a look! And get inspired!

25.01.2022 A beautiful video from the Island Waldorf School in Hong Kong - providing some answers to the many questions surrounding Steiner education including homework, the curriculum and so on. Thank you to Isla Jacquet who features in this video for sharing :D

24.01.2022 What memories and things are you creating these school holidays! Look at these beautiful photos from Steiner mum @julieanneverri showing the honouring of the Winter Solstice and celebrating the last day of Semester 2 #steiner #steinereducation #wintersolstice #schoolholidays

22.01.2022 "The pressure for children to meet lofty academic requirements years before they’re ready, have all but eliminated playtime from our schools. The opportunities t...o develop the social-emotional skills necessary to become compassionate, considerate and curious problem solvers are disappearing... As educators, we cannot allow this to continue." See more

22.01.2022 A Steiner education fosters the human spirit in children and young adults, allowing them to flourish in a holistic learning environment that is oriented towards moral growth, social consciousness and citizenship. Typically located in beautiful surrounds, our schools seek to nurture each individual and connect them to the reverence and awe of the natural environment, one another, and the world around them. Schools are grounded in working artistically, spiritually, practica...lly and intellectually. As well as being integrated, the curriculum is broadly based, interdisciplinary and culturally rich. We cherish the right of children to childhood and this is reflected in the staging of the Australian Steiner Curriculum which is recognised by ACARA. In early learning, we nurture a child’s development by facilitating creative, self-directed play, as we believe that the initiative, imagination and flexibility awakened underpin later academic learning and are the basis for innovative thought in adult life. 21.01.2022 Recent survey of Steiner/Waldorf graduates, uncovered commonalities of: - valuing the opportunity to think for themselves and to translate their new ideas into practice - practicing life-long learning and have a highly developed sense for aesthetics - seeking out opportunities to be of help to other people... Laurent, who is often knitting during his post-game interviews, is just one example of the many ways Waldorf graduates give back, strive harder, and change the game. See more

20.01.2022 Handwork such as knitting, crocheting and sewing are critical to a child's intellectual and emotional development. Knitting not only energizes children's tactile senses but is also instrumental in intellectual development. Students learn math, spatial and geometric skills when knitting and sewing. 20.01.2022 Big shout out to PDM Pest Control in Port Douglas! When I spoke to Shirl and the team about supporting our up and coming Steiner School in Mossman and current playgroup's pest management, they were only too happy to volunteer their professional services! Our TNSS is run by volunteers and like any new initiative, community support is vital to keep projects like ours going! So thank you again PDM Pest Control for donating your services! Our little school and playgroup are most grateful!

20.01.2022 Are you looking for something to do with your 1-3yr old? We are looking for families to begin playgroup Term 3. Tuesday 9:30-11:30am Please share with your friends and networks

19.01.2022 NEWS We have much positive news to share as well as announcing that our recent fundraising event (a stall at the Carnivale Beach Day) was a huge success - we raised over $900 to help make this school a reality for the community and although it was a time effort for the small team involved, it was also lots of fun!! News 1: The lease is now officially in the TNSS name!!! This puts us in a privileged situation as we can now progress with our Development Applications to ap...prove further building structures to grow our school. News 2: Tuition fees have been revised and reduced by almost half! $550 per term - $2200 per year with sibling discounts. Please visit the website to view the policy: https://www.tropicalnorthsteiner.org/media News 3: Interest for TNSS is growing, expression of interest is already being collected for the years 2023 - 2025. News 4: the kindy aged playgroup has started successfully and the 1-3 year old playgroup is set to start soon! Email Amber here to register your interest: [email protected] DEADLINES - THE NEXT 3 MONTHS ARE CRITICAL! The Board has established the 15th of September as the census date for enrolments for 2022, with a minimum of 10 and a max of 15 students to start in 2022. A teacher contract will need to be finalized by the 30th of September. In order to get TNSS over the line, the TNSS community needs your support over the next 3 months in the following areas: Help with marketing. We still have a couple of enrolments to fill for 2022. This can be done via word of mouth and if you have social media, sharing our TNSS page wherever possible. Achieve urgent funding for running costs (lease, rate, utilities, insurance). Without this money TNSS cannot pay the bills for the building and other fees involved to start. Please be aware that our team of volunteers including the Board/Management Committee are working hard behind the scenes to continue with Development Applications, Council requirements, policy development, social media presence, etc. They simply cannot do this without the support of all families looking at a Steiner education for their child/children in the Douglas Shire and donations of time and/or dollars from the community. Other help that is appreciated is Grant finders and writers. For those who have Registered their EOI please check your emails for important information. If you would like to register your EOI please do here: https://www.tropicalnorthsteiner.org/media Let’s work together to get our community school across the finishing line for our children and families!

19.01.2022 It’s all happening! Very exciting time for our local and surrounding communities

19.01.2022 What a beautiful day it was for our first Community Open Day! We planted our first of many trees together as a symbol of ‘new beginnings’ and learnt a little about Bio Dynamic farming! The children engaged in a story with our new teacher Isla as well as some crystal digging in our new sand pit, baking & wet felting with pure sheep’s wool. Even our local Mayor, Michael Kerr learnt some new skills! And it was lovely seeing our Deputy Mayor, Lisa Scomazzon there too! Isla gave ...a great overview of the curriculum for each year level providing some time for Q&A’s. The organic lemonade along with the massive bake sale using organic, plant based, locally made treats was also a huge success and we were able to raise money to put towards our playground Thank you to all who attended!! Thank you to our wonderful & supportive volunteers and amazing committee! Thank you to the Douglas Shire Council for their Micro Grant which made this day possible and to Jessie Goetze @Port Douglas Wedding Photography & Designer Portraiture Australia ! It was a magic day! #newbeginningsahead #steinereducation #steinereducationaustralia #portdouglasdaintree #holisticeducation #lifeskillsforkids #biodynamicfarming

18.01.2022 "Kathy Sylva, Professor of Educational Psychology at Oxford University, concluded after studying over 3000 children aged three to five that 'when children hav...e a large number of toys there seems to be a distraction element, and when children are distracted they do not learn or play well.' Her research shows that children with fewer toys whose parents spend more time reading, singing or playing with them surpass those from even more affluent backgrounds." See more

17.01.2022 We absolutely love this idea from @wildwattlefolk See repost below #Repost @wildwattlefolk ... Mindful Wand Over the last couple of weeks my little Nora has been riding some big emotional waves. Like a boat in the ocean we have been going with the natural flow of them. Rising and falling. While she feels and let’s go of all her inner frustrations. Collectively deep breathing. Today I made this little mindful wand for her to use, to help with her breathing practises. She will breathe in deeply and exhale, making the ribbons dance. Allowing the waves to gradually dissipate until she is ready to communicate with us what she wants, feels and sees. Where she will be met with open arm, heart & ears. These are very simple to create, you just need a wreath, a stick and some ribbons. I tired them all together, however you can also use glue. 17.01.2022 It is the time of the year when Steiner schools across the country celebrate their winter festivities and have their beautiful lantern walks. This is a time when we can reflect upon our own inner light to guide us during the darker, cooler, shorter days and longer nights, with the candles in lanterns symbolising the light from the sun during the warmer, longer days, and shorter nights. Celebrating festivals is a big part of Steiner education, we engage in reverence, beauty an...d it is an opportunity to connect with the seasonal ebb and flow of nature. These are the highlights of the community calendar, and the joyful memories resound thereafter. Happy solstice to all!

17.01.2022 At Marin Waldorf School, we very deliberately do not accelerate academic learning in our nursery or kindergarten programs. With ample play in these early years, students learn betterand show greater enthusiasm and confidencewhen our academic program begins in the first grade.

16.01.2022 I love watching my boy knit! In Steiner/Waldorf schools, they begin with finger knitting in Kindy, then French knitting in Prep followed by using traditional knitting needles in Class 1. There is so much brain development taking place during this process and science to support it. Crossing the mid-line of the body with the hands develops both left and right sides of the brain just to name a few! And they enjoy it!!

16.01.2022 New holistic school opening next year in Mossman. Taking enrolments now for Prep to Class 3 students (growing each year to Class 6). Small classes. Hands on learning. Sophisticated curriculum providing a multiple intelligence approach. Visit our website tropicalnorthsteiner.org and fill out the Intention to Enrol form today. Family interviews taking place this month!

15.01.2022 Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives. The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibilitythese three forces are the very nerve of education. Rudolf Steiner #steinereducation #steiner #growth #imagination

15.01.2022 A great article describing some of the highlights of Steiner Education. We are so blessed to have Cairns Hinterland Steiner School, our sister school, only 1.5 hours drive from our up and coming Tropical North Steiner School

14.01.2022 During this weeks Playgroup for Kindy-aged children the friends spent part of their indoor playtime drawing on what will form their lanterns for next weeks Winter Solstice Lantern Walk. Traditionally each season is learned about, honoured and celebrated in Steiner Education. The Lanterns represent hope, inner light and warmth. We can’t wait to share the photos of this walk next week!

13.01.2022 The most important thing is to find the routines and habits that work for you and your family and focus on those. Follow your instincts. You are the most qualified to know what your child needs to become who they are meant to become.

12.01.2022 Education is all around us And nature provides the best resources for learning. Make the most of these beautiful wonders surrounding you & your children

12.01.2022 If you are thinking of enrolling your child/ren... don’t miss out on our INTRODUCTORY OFFER for the enrolment fee! Usually $110, now $55 until end of this month. Family interviews taking place NOW! Don’t miss out on meeting our teachers!

12.01.2022 Some recent research to encourage families to limit the amount of screen time for children. An understandably very challenging task during these present times and we need to be gentle on ourselves whilst still creating balance. From my personal experience as a mother of two young boys, audio books are a wonderful alternative and allow the child to use their imagination whilst listening and further developing their inner eye. They can be purchased or borrowed for 'free' on yo...ur local library app. Eg. Borrowbox. My eight year old son began this process at age five starting with the Enid Blyton classics. There are many audiobooks out there aimed at 3 year olds plus. Drawing pictures, painting, constructing with blocks, boxes and so on are some other ideas in creating this mental imagery. Good luck friends! One step at a time x https://nachrichten.idw-online.de//smartphone-tablet-tele/

12.01.2022 Another special sneak peak into #steiner #learningfromhome in Julie’s home I love the quote she is calling on The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination #alberteinstein #steinermum #creativity #adaptation #isolation #nature

11.01.2022 Couldn’t resist taking a photo of my son’s blackboard today The amount of love that jumps off the board is evident with the efforts put in by each teacher. It’s a no wonder the children take so much pride in their writing, drawings and presentation of their work. Beautiful

11.01.2022 Very often we will see it in the way children play too! Credit: Pathway 2 Success

09.01.2022 Repost from @Rudolf_steiner_a2 (thank you) photo credit Cairnshinterlandsteiner At #rudolfsteinera2 art is as important as math. This is not because we want all of our students to become great artists, it is so they may become the most artistically creative engineers, computer scientists, doctors, etc... To think like an artist is to bring to life possibilities that weren’t there before. #cultivatinghumanity #creativethinking #artineducation #headhearthands #waldorfeducation

09.01.2022 Our Open Day is tomorrow! Come along to meet our teacher, participate in fun and educational activities and enjoy our healthy homemade bake stall!

09.01.2022 Against a background of tests and targets, unscripted queries go mainly unanswered and learning opportunities are lost. We should be encouraging spontaneous questions from our students because curious children learn better.

09.01.2022 Dear families interested in a Steiner education for your children, We have been invited by Dr Alex Bernhardi to present at the next ‘Think Tank’, which is a community platform to share ideas and projects, up and coming for our beautiful Douglas Shire. Please join us! Information below - https://douglaswonders.com//repository/community-meeting-s At this event, I will be discussing the school’s progress and what is required in order for us to move forward. Whilst everything... is in place to open our school including our recent approval to take over the Girl Guides lease, as the African proverb suggests If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. To ensure our school opens with the integrity to go far and strong, it requires the help of our community to drive it. We need a strong school committee with a committed group of families / individuals to brainstorm and action ideas for marketing etc. We have had to defer our opening until 2021 to allow for this to occur. If you are wanting a hands-on, sophisticated education which develops ‘life skills’ and well-rounded happy children, please get in contact with me or come along to the ‘Think Tank’ event THIS SATURDAY. I will be presenting at 12.10pm. So many hundreds of hours have been put in, to create this opportunity for the Douglas Shire community and our children. If we don’t have the support, we simply cannot open our doors. Lastly, if you are wanting to be on our mailing list, or expression of interest list, please let me know. Warmly, Julie Verri 0406 486 487 School Director

However, due to Covid restrictions, only families from the school could take part. Here are some examples of work and play

08.01.2022 Kids have not always needed to pass trigonometry to successfully transition into adulthood, but they have always needed time. Time to learn who they are. Time t...o explore their surroundings. Time to figure out how to enjoy their own company and how to structure their free time. Time to think, and to dream, and to dawdle, and to wonder. Kids need time. And as the school day, homework, and adult-directed activities take over much of childhood, we are left with lost children. #neurochild #letthemplay #childdevelopment

If you are seriously considering a Steiner Education for your child/ren, we strongly encourage as many parents as possible to attend, and we look forward to seeing you there! Please RSVP via PM to Julie Verri or contact 0406 486 487

06.01.2022 An enormous thank you to Alan Drysdale for sharing his enormous experience and knowledge re literacy delivery in Steiner education on Friday. We enjoyed learning about ‘Wet on Wet’ water colour technique inspired by a Grimm’s fairytale you delivered by heart Some notes from what we learnt... The story telling aspect in Steiner not only builds the child’s imagination but also develops the child’s rich aural literacy development, comprehension and the ability to ‘sit and ...focus’ for a lengthy time while listening in awe and wonder to these verbal stories, creating vivid pictures in their own mind. (In early childhood/Prep), a puppet show is also demonstrated of the story (but not before story is done verbally). A lengthy story (from a fairytale in the early years), repeated for a few days containing purposeful & sophisticated language, delivered in context (so the child naturally understands the meaning behind each word) allows compression to further develop in the child. The story is told with no pictures to begin - allowing the child to further develop their own imagery/imagination, where they will illustrate their own version of how they see a scene. The first day, the teacher will tell the story, the second day, the children as a class will be asked to reflect and re-tell the story from memory (all sharing different parts that they may remember) further developing their comprehension skills, along with an artistic component and drawing. The third day they will do the written component along with another artistic component from the story (perform a scene, do a watercolour painting or create a character with beeswax or clay. The story is living within the child via this process along with the variety of deep literacy skills gained along the way. (Sight words, spelling etc will also come out of this process). The first two hours of the day is called ‘Main Lesson’ and is combined with body work/movement/brain gym, verses/song & the theory component (each thematic unit lasts approximately 3-4 weeks). Hope that provides you all with a picture into one element of Steiner education

06.01.2022 Exciting opportunity for families. We are offering four scholarships for the 2021 school year. Seeking children turning 6 or 7 next year to apply. Don't miss out. Applications close end of this month! (30th November, 2020). Indigenous families encouraged to apply

04.01.2022 #Books are such a powerful tool for parents they are a way to connect, a way to calm down, and a way to teach life lessons. Here’s a list of books that teach... #children about self-control strategies and that are great to help children reflect on their own ability to self-#regulate in various situations. A second list includes books that teach children to breathe through emotions, to be able to pause before acting, and to be #mindful of their bodies, so that they can learn self-awareness and self-calming strategies that will become life-long skills for handling stress and emotions. And finally, a last list includes #fun picture books that show characters in laughable and relatable situations. Enjoy! #neurochild #bookworms
