10.01.2022 To write a great picture book...you need to get the words just right.’ Damon Young, author of MY DAD IS A DRAGON, shares his picture book writing tips in The Australian. University of Queensland Press SCBWI Australia East & New Zealand Before you write a word, ask yourself: What kind of children’s picture book do I want to read? Celebratory? Silly? Poignant? Thrilling? Then ask: What books already do this well, and how is mine better? (Yes, better. You may as well be ambitiou...s.) Put aside at least six months from start to finish. Picture books seem easy because they’re short. And some rely on illustrations more than words. But to write a great picture book (remember that ambition) you need to get the words just right. It’s not a huge impressionist canvas, it’s a Persian miniature. Obviously you’ll have your own style, but my picture books all feature three things: rhyme, alliteration and rhythm. These give the work a musical power. This helps kids, making the books easy and fun for them to say aloud. It also helps parents, carers and teachers avoid boredom, as they read the same books every night. After a long day, nobody wants to be yawning over dull phrases. Who’ll be reading your picture books? If your answer is lots of different people, then try to include lots of different people in them. If you’re not an artist, your publisher will usually find an illustrator for you. Think of them as your partner, not as your hired help. Your picture book will be better when you work together with the editors, tweaking as you go. If this all seems overwhelming, remember this vision: a child sitting on someone’s lap, enchanted by your words. Damon Young is an author and philosopher.
