24.01.2022 Tinea! What is it?! Tinea is a fungal infection caused by dermatophytes, which grow and spread in dead keratin on the skin, nails and hair. Tinea pedis commonly known as... athletes foot thrives on hot and sweaty feet, making athletes prone to the condition, however the hot climate in many regions of Australia makes tinea pedis common in the general population as well. Like Townsville!! Fungal infections are spread by contact. Sports changing rooms are one of the main breeding grounds for tinea as the flooring is often wet and people walk around with bare feet. The moisture on the floor carries infected patches of skin from one foot to the next. Symptoms: Tinea can be confused with dermatitis and other fungal infections, so close examination of the rash and microscopy of skin and nail scrapings is recommended to confirm diagnosis. In very severe cases of tinea that is not responding to treatment, external lab analysis may be necessary to confirm the fungus involved and provide targeted therapies. When it affects the skin, the condition is often referred to as ringworm due to outward growth that creates a ring-like pattern. Tinea pedis usually affects the skin between the toes and the plantar surface of the foot, and will be macerated and erythematous. The skin between the toes may become dry and cracked or scaly, and in some cases, vesicles and pustules can form on the sensitive skin. Tinea pedis can lead to tinea unguium on the toenails, which will usually make the nails appear thick, discoloured, and they will become crumbly and breakable. Tinea unguium can cause onychomycosis. Symptoms may be prolonged in immunocompromised patients, however as dermatopytes confine themselves to the dead layer of skin and do not lead to deep tissue infection, it is unlikely that tinea will cause any serious complications. Secondary bacterial infections are more likely to cause complications than the initial dermatophyte infection. If your concerned or worried call in to make an appointment and we can help you with treatment options

18.01.2022 Meet the Podiatrist! My name is Teresa Matai. I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand and finished my schooling and university studies there. I flew to Townsville in 2012 to kick start my career as a Podiatrist and since then the help and experiences I have been exposed to throughout the last 5 years has led my husband and I to open a podiatry clinic here in Townsville.... I graduated with a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Podiatry. Learning is continuous so I am quite passionate and committed on ongoing studies and courses in providing patients more treatment options. I understand the importance towards the quality of life in relations towards the lower limb and feet and how much they can do for us. Everyone are at different stages of their journey through their health So if your having problems from the hip down to your feet and are causing you limitations through daily activities come in and we can assess this and discuss a treatment plan for you

17.01.2022 Diabetes Diabetes is a condition in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high because the body is unable to use it properly. This is because insulin is lacking, or the bodys way of converting glucose into energy is not working properly. There are two common types of diabetes Type 1: is an auto immune disease where the bodys immune system attacks the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. As a result people with type 1 diabetes can not produce insulin an...d rely on insulin injections to survive. Type 2: Which is the most common type of diabetes, and is usually a result of hereditary factors and lifestyle risk factors including poor diet, insufficient physical activity and being over weight or obese. How diabetes can affect your feet Your feet are supplied with blood to keep them healthy. They also have lots of nerves that act as a communication and warning system. For example if you have a stone in your shoe, the nerves in your foot will send a message to your brain letting you know they are in pain or discomfort. However if your diabetes is poorly controlled for a long period of time this can lead to nerve damage. Nerve damage may mean that you no longer notice a stone in your shoe, due to loss of feeling in your feet. This can result in an injury or wound you cant feel and possibly an infection. If you have poor circulation, any injuries, wounds or infections to your feet such as cuts, burns or blisters will take longer to heal. This is due to less blood flowing to your feet to assist in healing any damaged tissue. When you have nerve damage and or poor circulation, you will need to take extra care to protect your feet from injury and wounds. Many foot problems in people who have diabetes occur when injuries and wounds, as well as infections go unnoticed and untreated, or when healing is delayed due to poor circulation. This can result in serious ulcers and in sever cases amputation of parts of the foot. Take the next step for prevention of diabetes foot related complications. If you or anyone that you know has diabetes - Come in or call us for a full Diabetic assessment

17.01.2022 Elite athletes have a high risk of injury while participating in sport and the most common sports injuries can all be attributed to podiatric complications. Professional and elite athletes push their bodies to the limit and will often risk injury for a better performance. That being the case, as a group, elite athletes will... often mask the symptoms of injury and can make difficult patients by playing down symptoms in an effort to get back on the playing field sooner. Podiatric treatment is recommended for elite athletes for the prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries and a podiatrist should be a key player in any medical team. It is important for any elite sports physician to recognise the patients desire to continue with the competition and, with this in mind, to work closely with the athlete to help prevent injury in the first place; to provide immediate return to play (RTP) treatment if the nature of the injury allows immediate RTP; and to provide more comprehensive treatment for serious injury. RTP readiness should be tested and only granted if the patient has regained full range of motion, strength, and if functional motor skills such as running and jumping have returned to normal. Treatment will most often fit with the PRICES acronym: protect, rest, ice, compression, elevate, stablise, with compression and stabilisation techniques used to prevent injury as well as to treat it. Compression stockings and braces have been proven to be effective in providing sufficient support to reduce the risk of injury during sport and can be important aids in injury prevention, as can the right sports shoes and the fitting of orthotics.

05.01.2022 CRACKED HEELS? (fissures) Here in Townsville, I see this every week! Our weather here doesnt help either, however there are other causes to deep, sore, cracked heels! SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS:... Very dry and cracked skin around the heel of the foot. Causes Use of inappropriate footwear Hot, dry weather that removes moisture from exposed skin Diabetes with onset of autonomic neuropathy Lymphoma Thyroid problems Downs syndrome Kidney disease or use of diuretics Dry skin conditions such as venous stasis or contact dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. RISK FACTORS: Genetic predisposition. Weight: overweight patients are at increased risk due to added pressure requiring increased elasticity in the skin. 03.01.2022 Bunion!? A bunion is a bony bulge or bump on the outside of the base of the big toe joint. When a bunion is present, the big toe will usually angle in toward the second toe and there is often bursitis at the base of the big toe. This condition is also sometimes called hallux valgus or hallux abducto valgus (HAV). Bunions are a common cause of pain in the big toe joint!... There are stages of bunion development. Without effective treatment, bunions can be quite progressive. Common causes for bunions? They can be hereditary, secondary to a chronic condition e.g: Osteoarthritis and or Rheumatoid arthritis. Trauma or ill fitting footwear. How are bunions treated? Bunions do not generally get better if left untreated. The condition usually only gets worse; bunions get bigger and big toe joint arthritis can develop. There are quite a few conservative treatments for this! To assess this we will go through a thorough assessment involving a biomechanical analysis, tissue structures surrounding this will also be examined. One of our famous positive responses so far have been our mobilisation, manipulation techniques and our secret specific exercises to which our previous patients had to be quite religious with! However, bunions that have reached the tertiary stage of development are more difficult to treat and may require surgical intervention. In addition to orthotics, well-fitting footwear is essential to reduce irritation and we will be able to provide advice on footwear to meet your needs. So come in! and see us! we will happy to assist!

02.01.2022 Footwear Our feet bear the extraordinary burden of our day to day living, they support all the weight of our body and allows us to be mobile. Its important our feet are well supported and protected, so shoes play a vital role in this. The Ideal Shoe... There is no such thing as the one perfect shoe. Feet come in many shapes and sizes, and undertake a range of different activities depending on your particular lifestyle. Generally though, when you buy new shoes, its important to make sure; They fit properly They are supportive for the kind of activity you will be wearing them for They do not cause damage to your feet or hurt you in anyway The Importance of a Good Fit Choosing shoes that fit well is an important part of caring for your feet. Finding the right fit may mean you have to look at a few different styles to accommodate your particular foot shape. Because feet are rarely the same size it is important that you fit your shoes to your larger foot. An experienced footwear sales person can help you with this. Since most shoe manufacturers have their own size range, you should make decisions on what feels best for your feet. People who have misshapen feet from an injury or medical condition such as arthritis or diabetes, may require shoes with extra depth or width, Some people may require orthoses (inserts). Occasionally, a custom made shoe will be the most suitable. Shoe Buying Tips When buying new shoes keep in mind the following; Materials: Leather is generally preferred for shoe uppers, however synthetics developed with specific beneficial properties,eg stretch may be preferable for some foot deformities. Synthetic or rubbers are best for the sole as they are often more durable, shock absorbent and provide better grip. Security: Shoes should be secured on the feet with laces, straps or buckles, especially walking shoes. If your feet have to work to hold your shoes in place you foot muscles may end up strained. Shape: Pointy shoes can make your toes "claw". This may affect overall body posture. Clenched toes can also cause rubbing, leading to corns adn calluses. broad toe shoes allow the toes more room and can help prevent pressure injuries Also check the following: The heel of the shoe is less then 2.5cm high, high heels increase the pressure on the ball of the foot. Your shoes have a well padded sole, a cushioned sol absorbs shock and reduces pressure on the feet Your shoes are made from a material that breathers, fungal infections such as tinea love a warm, moist environment, absorptive socks can help draw moisture away. Your shoes protect you from injury, your feet must be protected from your immediate environment. People with reduced sensation or circulation need to be especially careful they do not injure their feet. (Podiatry Qld Asso) BACK TO SCHOOL AND WORK? - It will be ideal to have shoes checked before your year starts! so call in and book an assessment!
