25.01.2022 JCU’s TropWATER Senior Researcher Katie Chartrand is leading the science coordination on the ground to help ensure the newly launched Great Reef Census has real impact to better manage this natural icon and for engaging the world as part of the journey. The team hopes to highlight both the real challenges the Great Barrier Reef is facing while also highlighting the vibrant life still thriving. Stay tuned as the Census gets underway. #greatreefcensus

24.01.2022 Researchers from JCU: James Cook University, Australia’s TropWATER are currently conducting Seagrass Surveys in Townsville. The team has been monitoring seagras...s in Cleveland Bay annually since 2007 and stepped it up to twice-yearly surveys last year as part of the marine monitoring for our Channel Upgrade project. The seagrass surveys are undertaken from helicopter at low tide (pictured) for intertidal seagrass meadows and by boat for subtidal and deep water seagrass meadows. The research team looks at multiple factors including the biomass, spatial footprint and number of seagrass species present. Stay tuned for our annual Townsville Seagrass Report which will be released later this year, once the research team has completed their surveys and crunched the numbers.
23.01.2022 This week's Ask the Expert Q&A with Coral Restoration expert Katie Chartrand is now LIVE! We received so many questions this week for Katie, a Senior Research...er at JCU: James Cook University, Australia and TropWATER Katie has answered them all, from the role of climate action, to the results of her work, the species of coral most resilient to bleaching and much more An important message from this really insightful video is that coral restoration will only work in tangent with urgent climate action and is not intended to alone 'save the Reef', but it does have a role to play. Thanks Katie and thanks everyone for your questions!
19.01.2022 Today is World Water Monitoring Day. You’ve probably heard how important our water monitoring program with JCU: James Cook University, Australia TropWATER is. ...But did you know about the scale and capacity of this key piece of our ambient monitoring program Measurements are taken by high frequency water quality loggers which record water depth, root mean square water depth (RMS), temperature, turbidity and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) every 10 minutes. We have 17 permanent loggers in total across #NQBP’s four ports. These return about 900,000 individual marine water quality records collected every year. #MonitorWater
17.01.2022 Say hello to Ingrid JCU: James Cook University, Australia student Ingrid Naschwitz is the first of three students to intern with our Environment Team in 2021.... Ingrid is completing a post-graduate Master of Science degree. Hear all about her time with us at our Ports of #Mackay and #HayPoint http://bit.ly/36u3G6p This was all part of our partnership with JCU and TropWATER Also, head over to our story to see more pictures and videos from Ingrid’s week on the job.

12.01.2022 World Wetlands Day holds special significance for Cairns Airport this year with a Fish Habitat Connectivity project kicking off on airport land The project a...ims to improve the water flow through the mangrove wetlands alongside Ellie Point Road by opening up large areas of fish habitat that have been restricted for over 35 years. With over 80% of fish species found in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park spending some part of their lifecycle in the mangroves, the long-term health of the reef is very much dependant on these wetlands The Australian Government’s Fish Habitat Restoration Fund has enabled the project to commence with a grant jointly awarded to OzFish Unlimited and Terrain NRM with support from Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporation and Cairns Airport. 12.01.2022 FRESH CREWS TRAINED IN TOUR OPERATOR WATER QUALITY SAMPLING PROJECT A fresh round of training was carried out last week for tour boat crews taking part in the W...hitsunday water quality monitoring citizen science project, Blueprint for Tourism Operators after COVID impacts on the tourism industry led to loss of staff trained earlier in the year. JCU: James Cook University, Australia scientists trained seven staff from tourism operators Ocean Rafting, Red Cat Adventures, and Southern Cross Sailing Adventures in water quality monitoring techniques. Extra trained crew now means four operators can participate again in the project, helping to take water samples and maintain data loggers at two sites in the Whitsundays. Dr Shelley Templeman and Dr Jordan Iles from JCU TropWATER delivered the training. Part of the training included taking the fifth set of water samples for the program. Despite the challenges the tourism industry faces, there is still strong support for the project, with new assistance being provided from South Pacific Yachting, who have donated equipment crucial to the project and Coral Sea Marina providing new space for operators to work in to process water samples once they are collected. Jan Claxton, Principal at Ocean Rafting said: Water quality monitoring has been on our Ocean Rafting wish list for many years and it is so exciting that we have an opportunity to be involved right now. These uncertain times are filled with challenges for tourism and it has been such a positive for our passionate team to get involved in this project which is so important for understanding our environment and the places we visit daily around the Whitsunday Islands. Data so far has highlighted the increased wave action and turbidity that occurred in the Whitsundays as a result of TC Gretel that was offshore in March. North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation CEO Nicolas Fertin said the port authority was delighted to support the program and assist tourism operators to learn new skills for the benefit of the environment. We’re honored to be able to support tourism operators in the Whitsundays, especially during this difficult time. Mr Fertin said. We share the same passion for the region’s environment and the reef. Collecting valuable data on effects of natural conditions on water quality and turbidity is really important and it’s great to see this program’s data sets emerging. Our own water quality monitoring program with TropWATER and JCU collects almost 900,000 individual marine water quality records every year across our four ports of Abbot Point, Weipa, Mackay and Hay Point. This project is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation, with support from Reef Catchments, Whitsunday Charter Boat Industry Association, James Cook University, Mackay Whitsunday Isaac Healthy Rivers to Reef Partnership, Whitsunday Bareboat Operators Association. Participating tourism operators are Ocean Rafting, Red Cat Adventures, Southern Cross Sailing Adventures and True Blue Sailing. Australian Institute of Marine Science Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

07.01.2022 Message in a bottle: detecting aquatic species in the waterways of northern Australia is now as easy as collecting water in a bottle, thanks to researchers from... the Northern Australia Environmental Resources Hub. A team of Hub researchers led by TropWATER & JCU: James Cook University, Australia Professor Damien Burrows has developed environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling and analysis techniques for endangered rainforest frogs and two species of tilapia and the invasive aquatic plant cabomba and cane toads to guide conservation or management actions. The new method not only also allows samples to be stored longer but to be collected in remote areas by people with limited scientific training. More: bit.ly/38H37oC

04.01.2022 Since the unprecedented mangrove dieback in 2015, JCU: James Cook University, Australia’s Dr Norm Duke has been leading a multi-Hub NESP project assessing the m...angrove dieback in the Gulf of Carpentaria and whether recovery is occurring. The sheer scale of the Gulf of Carpentaria coastline means that regular monitoring is a challenge. Through this project, Dr Duke has aerially surveyed 2,633km of Gulf coastline, but ongoing monitoring is critical to understanding mangrove recovery and identifying other unusual dieback events. To support this, the research team has produced a guide for Indigenous ranger groups along the northern Australian coastline to monitor mangrove condition using the MangroveWatch standardised shoreline assessment method. This guide establishes all the components and equipment settings so that groups can contribute standardised data to improve understanding of large-scale patterns in the Gulf’s important ecosystems. This work has also been supported by the Earth Systems and Climate Change Hub, the Marine Biodiversity Hub, and the NESP TWQ Hub.
