22.01.2022 TGALT held it's 39th AGM on Saturday. Great day with fantastic support from Tourism Tasmania, The Inland Fisheries Service and Hydro Tasmania. These three organisations are pivotal to a successful fishing tourism sector in Tasmania and their collaboration is outstanding. We were also grateful to have the Central Highlands Council represented, as another important fishery partner. www.troutguidestasmania.com.au

21.01.2022 Hydro Tasmania is a great Tasmanian organisation that is integral to the success of Tasmania's freshwater fisheries and to the business of Trout Guides & Lodges Tasmania (TGALT). This recent video features Norm who is a passionate fly fisher and fly tyer who has a few good tips about how to make good use of the time between seasons. We're all looking forward to our post-Covid fishing! Meantime, stay safe.

21.01.2022 TGALT is sad to see this great event cancelled. The Committee had been working hard to make it happen, but in these challenging times things aren't always going to plan.

21.01.2022 While TGALT has its origins in guiding, the TGALT community includes private fisheries and lodges that complement the activities of the guides. To find out more about our private fisheries and lodges check out their listings on the TGALT website by clicking on the Find a Lodge or Find a Private Fishery buttons at https://www.troutguidestasmania.com.au/ And for some insights into just a few of them, check out this recent article from our good friends at FlyLife who have c...hecked out the experiences on offer. https://flylife.com.au/articles/travel/stay-play-in-tasmania

20.01.2022 All members of TGALT look forward to the arrival of interstate visitors to Tasmania. From 26 October the Tasmanian Government is now applying fresh border controls for people from Queensland, The ACT, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Subject to some specific limitations, visitors from these locations are no longer subject to quarantine. And NSW is scheduled to join this group with effect from 6 November So TGALT’s members are standing ready to guide you, to accommo...date you and to help you stock up on your fishing gear so that you can immerse yourself in Tasmania’s trout fishing experience. Visit our website to check out who’s waiting to help you. Oh, and of course we’re all Covid-ready sanitisers at the ready to help us all stay safe www.troutguidestasmania.com.au

20.01.2022 The Inland Fisheries Services have now reopened Lake Sorell after further successful testing and trapping of Carp. Although we know the process has reduced trout numbers dramatically, TGALT looks forward to the gradual recovery of Sorell as a trout fishery. Presently access is available from Dago Point and Mountain Creek sides of the lake. Access via Silver Plains remains closed.

19.01.2022 A handy update from our friends at Inland Fisheries Tasmania, reinforcing just how good the start to the 2020-21 Trout Season has been in Tasmania. It's still pretty chilly up in the highlands, but even there the fish are active. And the members of TGALT are all there ready to support your fishing endeavours - whether you need a guide, some accommodation or gear.... www.troutguidestasmania.com.au

18.01.2022 Part of Tasmania's great fishery are the Western Lakes. These are also part of the State's Hydro Electric system and Hydro Tasmania are great supporters of our association. They've just issued this notice for anglers which we're happy to share. https://www.ifs.tas.gov.au//liawenee-canal-work-may-julian

18.01.2022 The countdown is on. The 2019-20 Trout Season starts on Saturday 1 August. And although the infernal Covid virus is limiting our plans for the season, rest assured our guides are still gearing up ready for fishers who want our help. For Tasmanians, there are guides ready to offer fly casting, coaching for individuals, introductory group sessions, and special packages as well as their regular guided packages. Our lodge members are looking forward to guests and our affiliate me...mbers still have their services available to help complete your fishing plans. For our friends on the mainland, please keep in touch - you'll find members happy to consider flexible booking requests. And for our international friends, our members will still be happy to hear from you, even though visiting is going to remain a challenge. And don't forget the five $10,000 fish that the IFS have put out there to make the season just a bit more exciting for a lucky few. See you on the water soon. www.troutguidestasmania.com.au

17.01.2022 The Tasmanian Inland Fisheries Service has produced a great video on fishing at Lake Burbury. Just one of the many trout fishing venues in Tasmania that your guides from Trout Guides and Lodges Tasmania can help you with. https://youtu.be/-ReZTTi_hRE Visit us at www.troutguidestasmania.com.au

17.01.2022 The members of Trout Guides and Lodges of Tasmania are approaching the one year anniversary of the terrible bushfires that hit our beautiful state and our businesses in January last year. That makes us all the more mindful of the devastating effects that the bushfires have had on our mainland states in recent weeks and months, particularly in locations that remind us so much of the areas in which our businesses operate. And while we recognise that it is only a very small drop... in a very large bucket, TGALT members have decided to contribute 10% of our annual subscriptions (a total of $550) to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal to help, in a small way, with the massive recovery task that faces so many communities. And of course we want to remind all our friends and followers that a visit to Tasmania may be a fillip for someone looking to put the bushfire blues aside for a while.

16.01.2022 TGALT is happy to see that great feedback continues to flow following the 2019 World Fly Fishing Championships. To help understand what's in store in Tassie and what our guides can help you discover, check out this clip produced by Tasmania's Inland Fisheries Service featuring Howard Croston, the top individual angler at the Championships. And then visit www.troutguidestasmania.com.au to hook up with a guide, to find your accommodation or to find places to stock up on some ge...ar when you're here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfJLAOaNFo0

15.01.2022 Always good to hear about fish taking duns on a Tassie Lake. Get in touch with a TGALT guide if you fancy taking advantage of this. www.troutguidestasmania.com.au https://www.ifs.tas.gov.au//dec/03/talbots-lagoon-fish-loo

15.01.2022 We know you might not need an additional incentive to go fishing, but the IFS are offering a great one. 5 chances to win $10,000 for catching a tagged fish soon to be released in 5 Tasmanian waterways. And, of course, TGALT's guides would be more than happy to help you with your efforts - no guarantees of course! Visit our website if you need a guide!... https://www.ifs.tas.gov.au//go-trout-fishing-and-win-50-000

15.01.2022 TGALT's guides and other members hope that all the competitors in this weeks championships have great success on the challenging waters of Tasmania's Central Highlands and on our northern lowlands rivers. All of the championship venues are popular with our guides and we look forward to showing others why Tasmania has been selected for these championships. As for the weather - well that, unfortunately, is one thing no one can control, but is all part of the experience.... So good luck to all and fish well! www.troutguidestasmania.com.au

14.01.2022 Before we let the 2019 World Fly Fishing Championships become a distant memory, our great friends at Flylife ( https://flylife.com.au/ ) have produced a great video of the highlights of the event. As you watch, if you put aside the influence of the crazy weather, you'll realise that the Tasmanian venue was a great choice, offering fantastic (but challenging) fishing. Visit www.troutguidestasmania.com.au to see how we can help you with your Tasmanian trout fishing experience.

14.01.2022 TGALT has recently welcomed a new associate member to its ranks Herne Lodge. While it is traditionally a hunting lodge, the hosts, Paul and Shauna, have also developed a fantastic private fishery that, with a TGALT guide, you can visit. Located on St Patrick’s Plains in the Tasmanian Central Highlands, this fly fishery was started with brown trout brought in from the Great Lake and from Arthurs Lake. Now, after four years, the lake boasts a population of healthy brown trout spawned in the lake's own feeder creek. If you are interested in visiting this new fishery make sure you ask about it when you contact one of TGALT's guides. Visit our ‘Find a Guide’ page at https://www.troutguidestasmania.com.au/listing-cate/guides/

14.01.2022 May all your loops be tight, may your flies float high, may the fish be rising and may your casts be accurate. All at Trout Guides and Lodges of Tasmania (TGALT) wish all our friends, clients and their families a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year. The trout, of course, take no time off for celebration, and, with the World Fly Fishing Championships seeming to have seen off the last of the crazy weather, we are all ready to take care of your trout fishing needs in Tas...mania. Visit us at www.troutguidestasmania.com.au to organise your next visit. There's still plenty of opportunities this season.

13.01.2022 The Tassie trout season is now officially in full swing, with the dedicated rainbow waters now open. Some good info here from the IFS about these waters. And of course TGALT members are ready willing and able to help you get on the water.... https://www.ifs.tas.gov.au//s/30/rainbow-trout-waters-open

12.01.2022 Tasmania's Inland Fisheries Service have achieved something truly remarkable in beating the carp that cruelly invaded Lake Sorell and Lake Crescent. Fantastic work by the ABC's Landline as well to share the history of the eradication. Lake Sorell might not yet be back up to its full potential but keep it in mind next time you're planning a visit to Tassie. Just ask your TGALT guide. www.troutguidestasmania.com.au... https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2885713868155508&id=105735272820062

10.01.2022 Our great friends at Fly Life are helping to keep us all abreast of the progress of FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championships Tasmania Australia 2019. Check out their first daily video report, in which the talents of the world’s best have shone, despite challenging and wintery conditions. We take our hats (or beanies) off to them all. https://flylife.com.au//world-fly-fishi/daily-update-day-1

10.01.2022 Here's some great news from the IFS. We've been waiting some time for this and, while it may take a while to get back to its former glory, the return of Lake Sorell is very exciting. Guides from TGALT will be monitoring it's progress and are looking forward to adding it to the fishing options that can be added into your Tassie fishing plans. www.troutguidestasmania.com.au

10.01.2022 The rains around Tasmania in recent weeks have had just the sorts of effects we hope for on some of our favoured waters. TGALT is pleased to see Lake Leake water levels coming back - it suffered a bit in the last season, but this news is really promising. Remember, if you are interested in fishing at Lake Leake with a professional Guide, check out TGALT's guides at www.troutguidestasmania.com.au

09.01.2022 The next piece of the Central Highlands jigsaw is in place. The opening of the gates to the Nineteen Lagoons offers more options for the fly fishing angler. Some of TGALT's guides are ready to introduce you to this special part of the Tasmanian trout fishery.

09.01.2022 VALE GRAHAM BLIGHT Sadly this week the Tasmanian trout fishing community lost one of its stalwarts. Few Tasmanian trout fishers would not have crossed paths with Graham whose love of fly fishing saw him devote so much effort to the sport. As a guide, as the founder of the Hobart Fly Tyers club and as the driving force behind the Great Lake Tie, Graham leaves a wonderful legacy and many many fond memories.... Tassie has lost a good'un. Tight lines Graham from all at TGALT.

09.01.2022 For those of you in the north of Tasmania here's some welcome news from Inland Fisheries about one of our lesser known waters - Camden Dam - that is benefiting from really strong water levels at the moment. Remember, TGALT guides in the north of the state are ready, willing and able to help you. Visit us at www.toutguidestasmania.com.au

08.01.2022 PLENTY RIVER FISH KILL TGALT has been horrified to hear of this week’s events on the Plenty River and the disastrous impact of the Salmon Ponds. The Salmon Ponds is the site at which Tasmania’s original brown trout and rainbow trout were first raised. These fish were the base stock of streams and lakes in Australia and New Zealand. A waste recycling complex has been inexplicably operating on the Plenty River above the Salmon Ponds and sadly has, allegedly, delivered a catast...rophic flow of tainted water into the system. As a consequence 105,000 brown trout fry, 12,000 rainbow trout fry, 43 brook trout broodstock and 25 display fish have been lost. If Tasmania lost the Salmon Ponds through such a system failure as this, it would wipe out over 150 years of the state’s trout angling heritage and history, destroy one of the Derwent Valley’s longest running visitors centre (4,000 guests per annum) and arguably the most significant trout / fish hatchery on the planet! Tasmania’s Environmental Protection Agency has been called in to investigate and TGALT will be monitoring their actions / results to see what will done to protect our angling heritage. Read more here: https://www.abc.net.au//plenty-river-salmon-ponds/12708252 And if you are interested in just how the Salmon Ponds have contributed to Tasmania’s trout fishing history, checkout this video that was produced by the IFish crew to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the first trout that were hatched there.

06.01.2022 As many of you would have no doubt guessed, the guides, lodges, private fisheries and other members of TGALT have gone into a state of early hibernation, with the Covid19 virus forcing all of us in Tasmania into shutdown for the time being. For more information about the impact of the shutdown, please check out our latest blog on the TGALT website: https://www.troutguidestasmania.com.au/blog/ ... And a quick shout out to the Anglers Alliance Tasmania whose Webcam offered up this great shot of deer on Penstock Lagoon

05.01.2022 While we don't like to see any waters closed to anglers, TGALT appreciates the fantastic ongoing efforts to finalise the carp eradication at Lake Sorell. Fingers crossed they can find the final handful of fish and the lake has a chance to start its rebuilding phase. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything else.

05.01.2022 Terrible to see such destructive recklessness damaging facilities like this. The Hydro is looking for help - hopefully these terrible people can be hunted down and prosecuted. https://www.facebook.com/219077828122094/posts/3619665388063304/

05.01.2022 Take a look at this fantastic new resource prepared by Tourism Tasmania and Discover Tasmania promoting fly fishing in Tasmania. https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/fly-fishing TGALT is thrilled with this element of the Unordinary Adventures campaign that wants to remind everybody of some of the fantastic opportunities that Tasmania offers.... Take a look and get in touch. TGALT members are waiting to help you out. www.troutguidestasmania.com.au Photo: Adam Gibson

04.01.2022 One of the important functions that the Inland Fisheries Service undertakes is to monitor the results of their stocking programs. They have just published the attached report on the movement of fish released into the Bradys chain of lakes. And don't forget, to visit the TGALT website to find guides who fish in these lakes.... https://www.ifs.tas.gov.au//anglers-report-tagged-fish-fro

04.01.2022 Jo and Steve Starling are both regular visitors to Tasmania and great friends of TGALT. Amongst their broad range of national fishing roles, Jo and Steve are promoting an Australia-wide recreational fishing survey to build a picture of the social, personal and economic benefits of recreational fishing. They have approached TGALT to have us reach out to our fishing community to encourage them to participate in the survey. (And, for those who might need a bit more encouragement, there are also prizes on offer). Please give it a go!

03.01.2022 One down but still four more to be caught. One lucky (young) angler has scored one of the five tagged trout that carry a $10,000 bounty. Maybe a day with a TGALT guide could become very lucrative!!
