24.01.2022 So it's supposed to be Black Fly Day today, or something along those lines. Here in Australia it's just another glorious day to go out fishing. And here's some inspiration for a black fly that just nails them in deep water. The gold Bug Band from Firehole Outdoors gives it this 718 Stone a little extra festive pop. To our friends over in the US. Happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe and be merry. #flytying #tieyourown #718stone

24.01.2022 One day the trout in the Goulburn will learn that Stick Caddis bite back. Until then, this remains an absolute essential fly if you're sight fishing to cruising browns in the slower water. Weighted and unweighted, you shouldn't be walking the banks of that, or any, river without a good selection of both in your fly box. #flyfishing #stickcaddis #tieyourown #backwinder

23.01.2022 Veniard UV Straggle Chenille is a great little product that has a range of uses. Nymph collars that offer plenty of buggy movement are a breeze with this stuff. But it also works as an underbody layer on streamers and can even bring a little extra life to your dry fly patterns. A little goes a long way in this case. #flytying #tieyourown #veniardflytying

21.01.2022 The Grey Hackle Yellow TieYourOwn kit is the latest addition to our range of flytying kits. This one is now available in time for the @anchored_outdoors October fly tying class. For those of you who didn't know, April Vokey now has a monthly online fly tying class available to Anchored Outdoors members. Hearing that was enough for me to sign up and reserve a spot in the class. Plus, we've worked with April to ensure complete kits and individual materials are available for Australian flytyers, ready for each month's class. If you join up, I'll be sitting alongside you all in class... via Zoom. Should be a hoot. And we'll all learn something too! #flytying #tieyourown #flytyingkit

20.01.2022 I don't always tie flies this fast. But when I do, I need to stop for a drinks break every four dozen. Here's a quick run-through of the 718 Stone Noir. I spent a good five minutes tying these the other day and now have several dozen in my fly box ready to roll. #flytying #tieyourown #718stone

20.01.2022 Well the rivers are still blown out after that spot of weather we had, so a sneaky late afternoon cod fish is probably just an exercise in futility. With that in mind, I'm settling in to some time at the vise for myself. Because, if you can't find a few hours to tie some flies, then the day is mostly wasted. Stay safe everyone, stay home and keep on tying. #flytying #tieyourown #getbusytying

14.01.2022 My new small stream box is now fully loaded and ready to be put to use. That's another @candf_design_ltd._official CF-3308 fly box I have added to my personal array. I love the combination of compartments for big fluffy dries and foam slits for plenty of nymphs. Of course, it won't look like this for very long. #flytying #tieyourown #flybox

14.01.2022 I'll be the first to admit that I was a little sceptical when this stuff arrived. The thought of taking a waterlogged fly, then dipping it in more liquid, in order to get it floating again just didn't add up. Well, it still doesn't add up completely. But it bloody well works! I've used this over the past few weeks and am amazed at how Loon Fly Dip brings a dry fly back to life.. when it isn't so dry any more. Well played Loon. This is the new 'must have' in my fly fishing kit. Right when summer is turning up. #flyfishing #dryfly #flydip

12.01.2022 This week's blog looks at dry fly feathers. Specifically, the difference between capes and saddles, and cereal box poultry anatomy degrees. https://www.troutlore.com.au//dry-fly-tying-feathers-expl/

We're keeping safe and isolated, ensuring your fly tying materials are being sent out every day to help you all enjoy your time at the vise. Got a question? 11.01.2022 We are very proud to announce that Richard Wheatley Fly Boxes are back in Australia and available from the Troutlore Flytying Store. Our first shipment landed yesterday, as some of you already caught wind of. And more stock is on it's way. Now you can own the Rolls Royce of fly boxes, because beautifully tied flies deserve quality housing. #flytying #tieyourown #richardwheatley www.troutlore.com.au

11.01.2022 Genuine Jackalope Fur from The Lost Fly, wrapped on @flymenfishingco articulated shanks and an @ahrexhooks TP610 2/0 hook. This material offers a nice tonal gradation as it's trimmed along the length of a Gamechanger fly. Plenty of mass without weight, and fast water shedding. It'll be off for a swim test next week after I've tied a bunch more in different sizes and lengths. #flytying #tieyourown #gamechanger

10.01.2022 It's October. We've got a waining gibbous after this morning's full moon. And since we can't go out fishing here at the moment, here's a shot of @hookedup_magazine in the Goulburn many years back on another October full moon. There was an epic snowflake caddis hatch that evening. One I have not forgotten. Didn't help Kosta though, with those big bits of plastic he was hoofing across the river! #flyfishing #getoutdoors #matchthehatch #manicmates

09.01.2022 Without a doubt, this was the prettiest fish we landed the other week when out with Indulgence Flyfishing. And a very welcome capture for me after being shown who's boss not ten minutes earlier by an absolute horse. Ah well, you win some, you get your arse handed to you by others. It give us fuel for retelling stories for years and years. #flyfishing #catchandrelease #findyourwater #glassisnotdead

09.01.2022 We love this hook! The 718 from @fireholeoutdoors is one of my favourite profiles. It does so many patterns, and does them well. Naturally, it's a brilliant Stimulator hook, with a nice wide gape. But it works a treat on nymphs and buzzers too. For instance, the 718 Stone that accounted for 2/3 of the fish I landed the other day. Stupid sharp, beautiful geometry and tough as nails. Plus they are available from a formidable size #6 right down to a tiny size #24. Rippa! #flytying #tieyourown #firehole

08.01.2022 I drew some inspiration from @thursdays_hopper last week and got back to the Stimulators. With a combination of Whiting Golden Badger and Speckled Badger hackle of coairse. Plus Nature's Spirit Select Cow Elk for a change. Oh, and I threw in a foam body for extra floatiness. Even though that isn't a real word. #flytying #tieyourown #stimulator www.troutlore.com.au

07.01.2022 I know a lot of you are tying Buggers this week, along with Shreks, Magoos and similar flies. So, it got me inspired to wrap up a few this morning to start refilling the lake boxes. Nothing like being prepared... late. Shane @gippsland_fly_fisher got me all inspired on these, so I'm blaming him for the mess that is my tying desk today. This streamlined speedster of a Woolly Bugger is tied on a Daiichi 2220, but I'll be tying a bunch on some @fireholeoutdoors barbless hooks this afternoon. A bit of chenille, some quality marabou and exceptional saddle feathers are about all it takes. Pluse some thread. And a bit of wire. And a bead. I might go a little more flashy in the next bunch though. #flytying #tieyourown #woollybugger

06.01.2022 The Richard Wheatley Fox Fly Box is here! These sturdy, UK made plastic cases offer a unique hook holding grip system. They keep your dry fly hackles off the deck and reduce crushing of feathers, whilst keeping them all laid out in neat little rows. The slim 'trout' model is available in black or green and the deeper 'salmon' model comes in a very British blue. #flytying #tieyourown #flybox

04.01.2022 With more stock of C&F Design fly boxes now available, including my favourite, the CF-3308, I was able to 'liberate' another one for myself this week. One can never have too many flies, or fly boxes. And, just in time for the terrestrial action to start firing up. These boxes offer the best of both worlds. Individually sealing compartments for dry flies on one side and micro slit foam for nymphs on the other. All in that tough, waterproof case that C&F are so well known for. You can check them out, and the rest of the C&F range, at the Troutlore Flytying Store now! #flytying #tieyourown #flybox

01.01.2022 Early season meat eaters in high water are a real hoot to catch. That aggressive take on even the smallest of streamers is a load of fun. It's nothing like setting a hook on a dry fly take, and as such makes you constantly rethink everything you do on the water. Good times! And educational too! #flyfishing #tieyourown #streamers
