24.01.2022 Spent a day fishing with my brother Col. We saw no real action until around 3 oclock in the afternoon when all hell broke loose and the first few mayfly started to show. For the next hour and a half we had eight good hook-ups and more than 50% were rainbows which went ballistic. Tail walking over the surface was common. We had a great time. Here is a few of the fish we caught on the day. For more fishing tales, visit our Trout Blog: http://troutterritory.com.au/trout-blog/... Photo credits: Gary France and Colin France
24.01.2022 The day started with a fresh brewed coffee and a glint in our eyes, as the weather patterns appeared to be favourable. Art wanted to fish streams and spend the day chasing brown trout, so we headed for the St Patricks River. Due to recent rains, it was still up a bit and flowing with some gusto, yet was as picturesque as always. It was partly cloudy, partly warm but mostly cool and the breeze was stiff. Not really much insect life about except a new batch of nymph hoppers a...nd crickets plus some occasional mayfly, caddis and beetles. Art was straight onto a fish with his second cast but unfortunately dropped him, which happens to us all but as any good angler does, he steeled his resolve and forged ahead and ended up landing 4 fish for the day. A few other minor opportunities arose here and there but he worked the water very well and it was quite a productive day. In very pleasant surroundings it was a good day for all. 23.01.2022 Drifting in close to shore on Fosters Bay, near Cripps Point on Penstock Lagoon, scattered spinner over the water and just the odd dun popping off in brief cloudy breaks. This feisty fish rose like a dolphin over the spinner dry fly and Edward was rewarded with this lovely wild brown trout. This one went home with Ed and his dad Jim for dinner. Autopsy revealed the belly of this fish was filled with Mayfly nymphs, stick caddis, very tiny isopods, and a few beetles, all contri...buting to a bright, vibrant orange flesh. 22.01.2022 Meander River in one day in February. It was very bright, no fish out in the open, so the essential cast was close to the bank around undercuts and overhanging cover. Dave executed some good back handed roll casts to present his fly effectively. This fly was a grasshopper with bead head nymph under. 19.01.2022 Mid March, good rains and flow, along with colour in the rivers, and good nymphing techniques bring in fish that wont look toward the surface. Wading skills, positioning on the river, and really good line control are needed. Tom with wild brown trout.... 18.01.2022 Early November two good mates from Victoria got together to learn fly fishing. Jack and Hayden both proudly show off their first ever trout on the fly, and with the first serious mayfly hatches of the season, dry flies were the order of the day. Overcast conditions with some sunny breaks, and light to moderate winds are ideal conditions for mayfly hatches. Gusty conditions and even drizzle can really bring things on. There are always areas more sheltered and these can be the ...gold pot at the end of the rainbow. 17.01.2022 Reno had been practicing his casting skills before coming on a guided day with us. And with a few tips from Gary to tweak his technique, Renos casting really came together in an amazingly short time. Its all about line control with fly fishing, and when the rod tip is close to the water it makes a huge difference for many reasons. Reno kept his rod tip down and in touch with the fly, so was ready when this supremely well marked and strong wild brown trout took the emerging ...Antron Nymph under a Pink Lady emerger/dry fly. Gary brags that the pink lady is the most outstanding mayfly pattern hes come up with so far because its highly visible. 17.01.2022 There are no visiting anglers to the state at the moment however we are seeing some very good fishing since the opening of the season. Water levels are excellent, with many lakes and rivers covering new ground and the fish piling on condition with plenty of snail, stick caddis, and scud in their stomach contents. Some are chasing Galaxia very close to the shorelines. On the brighter days fish can be polaroided over sandy bottoms, sometimes very close in to the shore. Galaxia imitations, i.e. weve been catching fish on the Wigrams Robin and Bill Becks Green Machine. For more fishing tales, visit our Trout Blog: http://troutterritory.com.au/trout-blog/

14.01.2022 World Fly Fishing Championships start today in Tasmania!
11.01.2022 New to fly fishing, Darren quickly gained confidence with his casting, even managing a hookup on Penstock Lagoon. Darren enjoyed the fly fishing experience and learned a lot from his guide Matt, and is keen to return to Tassie for some more wild trout fly fishing. 11.01.2022 Mayfly hatches were in full swing on many highland waters when Brian and Christopher came fishing back in February. Both enjoyed learning new loch-style skills and reading and fishing to conditions on the lakes. Well placed and timely casts paid high dividends. Many exciting moments, including a new spinner pattern designed to have fish jump into the boat succeeded for 5 good fish in the next hour. Heres an example of some fine browns and rainbows.... 10.01.2022 THREE LAKES, EARLY SEASON: QUICK REVIEW Four Springs, Lake Leake, Penstock Lagoon. There are generally high water levels around most Tasmanian trout waters. Heres a quick review of three of our favourites.... FOUR SPRINGS Four Springs is a low altitude lake, only a couple of hundred meters above sea level. With warmer water temperatures, its primed for the first mayfly hatches and dry fly fishing over the next week or two. LAKE LEAKE Lake Leake, mid altitude on the eastern mountain ranges. Good wet fly fishing and a few fish seen rising. Once it clears up and temperatures come up a little more well see mayfly hatches and windlanes. Currently there are millions of stick caddis. The trout are in really good condition. Anglers Alliance have installed a new webcam at Lake Leake which gives a great shot of the lake throughout the day. Theres a new pontoon addition. Water levels are spilling. PENSTOCK LAGOON Penstock Lagoon in the Central Highlands is the highest altitude of these three lakes. Theres great wet fly fishing at the moment and the mayfly hatches wont start until the weather warms up a bit, probably in late October. 09.01.2022 ARTHURS LAKE OVER THE LILY PONDS During a day on Arthurs Lake we were fishing over the lily ponds. In shallow water about a foot deep all of a sudden there were many fish taking emerging duns. Dean was a keen fly fishing student, and soaked up as much knowledge as he could. The result is Deans first trout on a dry fly. He nailed this 53 cm beautifully marked Arthurs wild brown trout with a Pink Lady mayfly emerger.... 07.01.2022 This chunky rainbow engulfed Rays mayfly pattern on Penstock Lagoon. This was in early February. Penstock has been rather consistent over the season, and its good to see a bit more water in it over the last few weeks. With very calm conditions on Arthurs Lake the browns are close to the shore on mayfly spinner, but only when theres cloud cover. Ray is pretty happy with this wild brown trout. 06.01.2022 Arthurs Lake Lily Pods, and a few straggling duns are taken greedily by this feisty wild brown trout in the shallow weedy margins. Kevin looks pretty happy with this one. For more fishing tales, visit our Trout Blog: http://troutterritory.com.au/trout-blog/... Photo by Gary France.
05.01.2022 Tassie fly fishing is up there with the best in the world!
05.01.2022 A note about water closures during the Worlds. If you want to come fishing, we have many other choices :)
04.01.2022 Brothers Mitch and Cooper, and Dad Clive, shared some real quality time over three days as complete beginners to fly fishing. Despite the blustery conditions the duns are still hatching and here is Mitch with his first ever wild brown trout, which he caught on a dry fly. 04.01.2022 A magic moment for Phil, whose bucket list included fly fishing. This magnificent brown sipped down his stationary red spinner in the glass and all hell broke loose! 04.01.2022 Jordan and dad Joe had some fly fishing experience in New Zealand over a year ago, so we spent a little time off the water refining the cast and tweaking line control techniques. Jordan nailed this prime barrel of a rainbow trout with just a small movement of a dry fly not two rod lengths from the boat. Why is it important to move a dry fly? Old text books say that we shouldnt. This is true when it comes to drag, which doesnt look natural. However if you can mimic the actio...n of a natural trout food with the right combination of movement and stopping the fly, you will capture the trouts attention and awaken their basic predatory instincts. They dont just see it, they can feel it from a few feet away. For more fishing tales, visit our Trout Blog: http://troutterritory.com.au/trout-blog/ Photo credit: Gary France
04.01.2022 Art had a second day fly fishing in Tasmania, this time on a river in the south. Landing 6 fish and seeing a platypus feeding for several minutes were highlights of the day. Love this pic of Art in action!... For more fishing tales, visit our Trout Blog: http://troutterritory.com.au/trout-blog/ Image by Rod Turton.
03.01.2022 Richard from South Africa and Peter from Canberra joined us for a couple of days fishing Tasmania for some wild brown trout. None of us were expecting the heavens to open on their first day, but nonetheless, much needed rains began early and persisted throughout the day, all over Tasmania. After looking through the weather charts, we decided to head up the plateau to Penstock Lagoon where we anticipated being above the heavy pours and stronger winds and although gentle rains ...persisted for the day, we did experience light variable winds which provided some spinner and damselfly falls interlaced with some duns popping in between. Many hours of chasing tails and fins followed with a handful of real opportunities to each angler, but unfortunately the trout won that day. For the following day, we had planned on fishing the South Esk River, given that both Richard and Peter were keen to wade some clear waters in search of rising trout but the rains hit heavier than anticipated and mostly at lower levels, quickly flooding all rivers to a total brown out. So we went to Currawong Lakes for the day and fished in gin clear waters and much improved weather conditions with a good breeze and intermittent sun and cloud and the fish loved it. We found browns torpedoing airborne insects and mopping up spents, giving a few opportunities throughout the day. Both gentlemen managed a good fish each, approaching 5 pound and plenty of banter followed about whos trout was slightly bigger than the other. A very enjoyable couple of days for all involved. 02.01.2022 Something were doing more of now is targeting the estuaries of Tasmania using fly, lure and bait for the many schooling salt water varieties that are available. This is Dylan on a recent adventure on the Tamar River with his first ever whiting. For more fishing tales, visit our Trout Blog: http://troutterritory.com.au/trout-blog/... Photo by Gary France. 02.01.2022 Jonah Bay, at the northern end of Arthurs Lake. Windy conditions but we managed to get into some protected areas. Sheldon and Tom enjoy a Tassie trout fishing adventure in late December 2019. Jonah Bay has a boat ramp and camping with basic facilities. Jonah Bay gives access to a number of sheltered areas, i.e. Cowpaddock, Lily Ponds, Duck Bay, Telegraph Bay.... 01.01.2022 SHALLOW WATER FUN ON WOODS LAKE Brennan landed this fine wild brown trout that took his emerger mayfly pattern in shallow water on Woods Lake. Good placement of the dry fly close to weed fronds saw a quick take, and Brennan kept the pressure on to wrestle this fish out from between the reeds.... 01.01.2022 John and Harry experienced some of Tasmanias best mayfly fishing on Pentstock Lagooon and Four Springs Lake. Another day was on the Meander River, where small mayfly and grasshoppers were the flies of choice. A couple of the lovely fish caught during their fishing trip, early March.... 01.01.2022 LAKE LEAKE 4 lb BROWN TROUT Victor managed a solid hookup on this Lake Leake 4 lb wild brown trout which showed some solid muscle and took some time to get to the net. Using at least a 6 pound leader helps to get these wild fish in as soon as possible making release of fish most viable.... 01.01.2022 DRY FLY EMERGERS ON PENSTOCK Philippe and Lex took these very nice wild browns and this gorgeous rainbow and others on dry fly emergers on Penstock Lagoon, during a dun hatch and others into the afternoon as the mayfly spinner came over the water. Our day started out with good cloud cover and a light breeze. Into the afternoon the cloud virtually disappeared and the fish continued to show....
