21.01.2022 Terowie SA is pretty much a ghost town, with the emphasis on pretty. In its heyday, the town was a bustling railway transhipment centre where all goods and passengers had to change from broad to narrow gauge trains or vice versa. Railway workshops, goods yards and storage sheds stretched for 3kms through town. Today all that’s left of this busy town is a collection of very photogenic stone buildings, and an interesting history outlined on information boards around town. 18.01.2022 An interesting sight to see along the Nullarbor is the Old Telegraph Station at the Western Australia/South Australia state border. In Australia’s early days, the states were separate colonies. Messages would arrive at one part of the telegraph station, be carried to a wall that represented the state boundary, then passed through a pigeon hole to the other state's telegraphist. Bureaucracy was alive and well in Australia’s early days! 17.01.2022 Some of the magnificent tall timber at Cann River Rainforest Caravan Park. Camping at the park remains free, with stays up to 36 hours only. As you would expect, facilities are basic. From the park it’s just a short walk across the bridge to the pub and the town’s main street. We should mention that staying there can be a bit eerie when strong winds blow through those big trees. 17.01.2022 These odd looking items in Bicentennial Park in Charleville Qld are the epitome of the old saying desperate times call for desperate measures. In 1902 this part of Queensland was suffering a severe drought. There had been no decent rain for six years! Queensland’s first Government meteorologist, Clement L Wragge, ordered six copies of the Steiger Vortex Rainmaking Guns that had been used to break up hail over vineyards in Italy. The hope was that the explosions made by firing the guns into the sky would change the atmospheric pressure and make it rain. It didn’t, at least not until later in the year when Mother Nature was good and ready. Taken at Charleville Qld.

Beautiful views of Darwin and Fannie Bay, fascinating history at Darwin Military Museum, lots of walking and cycling paths, bbq facilities and playgrounds. We loved the 5km East Point Science Trail. 12.01.2022 In days gone by, special occasions such as Easter and Christmas services were held in the Cathedral Cave at Wellington NSW. The formation in the photo, known as the Altar and Pulpit, is an impressive 15 metre tall stalagmite. 09.01.2022 The weather in Lithgow was very ordinary today but our trip to the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum was anything but! We were expecting to see guns, but the displays relating to other goods produced there were a big surprise. Golf clubs, sewing machines, mixmasters, tools and even handcuffs. We loved the beautiful artworks by one of the factory workers that highlight different aspects of life at the factory.
