15.01.2022 Hearing during the festive season can be difficult. A top tip from the team at True Hearing, in order to hear better at the festive lunch or dinner table is to pick a good position. If celebrating at home, the middle of the table is your best bet. This way you can hear people on either side of you. If booking a restaurant, ensure you call ahead and request a table near the sides of the room. Generally, tables in the middle of a room are much louder as noise bounces off the w...alls and into the middle of the room. And, most importantly, ensure you are seated facing the wall. Make sure your hearing aids are in tip top shape did you know that over time your hearing aids can lose effectiveness due to dirt and moisture blocking the microphones and speakers? Let us give them a good clean and check for you to ensure they are up to the j...ob ahead. 2. Be the organiser if you can be in charge of booking venue’s, you can choose places that have softer or no music, carpeted floors or other soft furnishings, or outdoor areas to minimise background noise. You can also ask for a table away from any noise source, like an open kitchen or coffee machine. 3. Get there early to choose your spot! try to arrive at social events a little early to choose the best hearing location eg: have a wall behind you so you can be facing people directly, and not distracted by background noise. If one ear is better than the other, you can choose the best seat at the table to suit your better ear and not get stuck with your bad ear facing the group. 4. Turn up the lights we all have a new appreciation for lip reading since mandatory mask use, so if you can be safely mask free, then ensure lighting is also good to maximise your ability to read people’s faces. 5. Share your situation let people know that you have hearing loss, and they will be more understanding and more likely to accommodate any requests for repetition you might need to make. 6. Take a break when you need to Keeping up with noisy conversations with hearing loss can be very tiring, so take a quick break when you can to give your brain and ears a rest.
