20.01.2022 Happy to announce I will be running jiu jitsu fundamentals courses at HQ from July 13th at 6-6:30pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. The course will be 6 weeks long, with 3 x 30min sessions per week. The course also invludes complimentary access to the adults class held immediately afterwards. The aim of these classes is to help absolute beginners to understand the 'hows' and 'whys' of Jiu Jitsu. ... There is nothing worse as a beginner than feeling like you have no idea what to do! This is especially true in Jiu Jitsu, because you're getting beaten up at the same time(No beginners were injured in the writing of this post)! This course will help provide you with the skills and understanding you will need in order to 'survive' your first few weeks! The course is only $149 for the 6 weeks and includes 6 weeks worth of the adult sessions (valued at $180 on its own), so you can put what you learn into practice! Contact Dan, for more information at [email protected] I hope to hear from you soon! Dan

20.01.2022 As you may have heard, lockdown is being reinstated as of midnight tomorrow (Wednesday), night. Sadly, this means that all classes that were going to recommence on Monday will have to be suspended for at least 6 weeks. However, muay thai will still run tonight and Yoga tomorrow night. Make the most of it team. I wish the news was better.

19.01.2022 A big True Grit welcome to Finn and Jack who joined us for Muay Thai today. Great to have you guys on board!

19.01.2022 Kids classes recommence on Saturday! Starting at 0900 for 4-7year olds, then from 0930-1030 8 and over! I hope to see all of the 'old' faces and maybe some new ones!

17.01.2022 Personal, 1 on 1 sessions will also return on July 13. Nail down some of the more technical stuff with personalised instruction.

16.01.2022 You can sign up for a membership, either Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai or BOTH, by clicking on the link below! It will be great to have you on board!! https://trial-500e64e0.zenplanner.com//por/sign-up-now.cfm

16.01.2022 A bit of late night strategy talk. When taking the back, how many of you end up on your own back or side? Most of you? Thought so. Riddle me this....if many of the escapes from back control involve getting the back and shoulders to the ground, why then do we so frequently seek to control our opponents where they are able to do this more easily? Now, hands up if you've ever had someone on your back, hooks in, and you are belly down, and you thought 'I may die here'...why did... it feel that way? Because you are bearing their weight, your hip and thighs are being put into an extended position and your arms are significantly impeded by your own bodyweight, plus theirs. This makes attacking the neck and countering their escape attempts soooo much easier. So next time, try deliberately placing your opponent belly down. Watch your submission rate soar! Ward, out. See more

15.01.2022 If all of my interstate jiu-jitsu friends could stop posting training photos, that'd be great.

15.01.2022 A big True Grit Jiu Jitsu happy birthday to Chloe! We hope you have a great day!! Hope to see you on the mats again soon!

12.01.2022 As we (hopefully ), transition back to training i thought it would be a good time to discuss ego and the importance of the mental aspect of training. Following numerous significant surgeries, I have to make a number of 'comebacks' after long lay-offs from training. It has been these comebacks that made me really aware of how much of an impact your mental state can have on your training. I found that I was often training and performing better against difficult opponents (wh...o were not going easy on me), post surgery, than I had done pre surgery. Why I thought? It was then I realised that it was because I was putting absolutely no pressure on myself to perform. I had no expectations of how I would go, in fact I often thought about how much of a hiding I was going to get lol It was then that I noticed my performance begin to suffer. "Thats strange" I would think, I was beating that person last session but tonight I had nothing. Why was this?! Pressure. Quite simply, I was putting more pressure on myself based on my previous performances. I was expecting to continue to do well and find it easier, but it wasn't, because I was placing increasing levels of pressure on myself to continue to 'win' when I was training. This mindset is present in jiu jitsu regardless of any injury. Simply training with someone who is a lower rank than you can result in this feeling. Focusing too much on 'who' you are rolling with and not enough on 'what' you should be doing to deal with the immediate problem, the jiu jitsu that is being performed 'on' you. So what am I trying to say? Let go of expectations, let go of the 'win at all costs' mentality and you will continue to enjoy and develop your jiu-jitsu. Wishing everyone all the best with their learning (and remember, thats all you are doing, learning).

12.01.2022 Our last yoga session for at least 6 weeks! Just as I was starting to really feel the benefits! See you at 7pm.

11.01.2022 Great session tonight at the Bull Pit. More mount defense, escape and guard replacement. Some tough, tough rolls, but that's just how we do things. A big welcome to John who joined us tonight. It was great to meet you and I am glad you enjoyed the session. Looking forward to the 0600 session!!

11.01.2022 Throwback Thursday. Happier times (training, not the location lol), an option ive been using with pretty regular success. It is a debilitating position for the person on top due to the tight head control. The head is key to the ability to remain mobile on top. If you can't move your head, you will find it very difficult to transition. The key for the bottom person, apart from head control, is to deny control of the space between the upper arm and rib cage. Keep your forearm 'inside' this space. Give it a try (if you live somewhere that you can train without being arrested lol). Let me know if you have any questions

11.01.2022 Day 1 of training is officially in the books. A midnight session for the die hards. 0600 session. 1730 for the kids and then 1830-2000 Adults Gi session. The days are long, but Im pumped!

10.01.2022 Great session tonight at HQ. Half guard deliciousness

10.01.2022 There are plenty of memes around about the 'disappearing' Blue Belt. Whilst amusing, as we all know at least 1, I thought it worth discussing one of the possible reasons why. Blue belt brings with it a feeling of success. You've made it. You are on your way. You have also started to get a sense of being physically very capable of tapping people at or below your level, heck, you may even snag the odd upper belt. You develop a new sense of self, of efficacy and you begin to be...come, wait for the controversial kicker, Arrogant. Many blue belts quit, in my opinion, out of a mixture of ego and arrogance. They have developed their skills to a level where their ego gets inflated. They're cocky, confident and probably, although not always, at the younger end of the room. This is where an increased sense of self esteem becomes arrogance. Age also plays a significant part in the ego. When we are young we tend to be brash and over confident, but we also lack a true sense of self and do our utmost to project a sense of power and strength (mostly just men btw). This is what often leads to arrogance and over confidence. This tends to subside as you age and work your way through the ranks, or at least, thats what i found. Of course, as you continue to train you begin to recognise that perhaps you aren't as shit hot as you first thought, you begin to doubt yourself as you are inevitably bettered in training drills and free rolling, often by smaller, less physically capable opponents. Your self esteem takes a hit, badly. Its at this point, who you are at your core, your resilience and Grit will determine your way forward. If you see challenge and loss as opportunities for growth, you will push on. If not, you will seek safety and excuses. Instructors play a big part in helping their students understand the roller coaster that is Jiu-Jitsu. Make sure your students understand that jiu jitsu is one of the most emotionally challenging sports you will ever do, that they will absolutely go through ups and downs, both from a performance perspective and emotionally. Understanding this helps students overcome these challenges once they recognise that others share the same doubts. Support them. Take the time to chat with them. Help them realise that loss and struggle is all a part of jiu jitsu. They will thank you for it when they receive their Black Belt from you in the years to come!

09.01.2022 Grit, Resilience, Determination, Perseverance, and Rigour. All of the above describe what jiu-jitsu can do for you. Especially for your kids. I have been teaching professionally in a high school setting for more than a decade now and can honestly say that it is these qualities listed above that are in scarcest supply in our young people. They are a generation of children who are being raised by the internet and technology, where gratification is instant and the value of ha...Continue reading

05.01.2022 It looks like training is still at least 6 weeks away, at least!! Its a depressing time for all of us. But we will see this through. We will come out on top. We will get to train again. We are all just on ice at the moment. Im using this second period of lockdown to continue to work on my conditioning and weight loss (I used to fight under 79kg!). Ill also be expanding my mind and exploring my creativity with music and artwork. Try and avoid dwelling on what we can't do at the moment. Focus on all of the things that you CAN do! A positive mindset WILL keep you sane. It WILL make things easier. We WILL get through this.

05.01.2022 Tonight's No Gi class has been cancelled. Apologies for the inconvenience. If you would like to organise a trial class, please send me a message and I will ensure that you are registered for attendance. True Grit Uses Zen Planner gym software. There will be a link on the website and here for new or prospective members to follow in order to register their attendance. I am still navigating the software so will make this adjustment soon. My apologies for any inconvenience howev...er this will make the whole signing up process far more streamlined. Regards Dan

04.01.2022 First video in a little while. A few minor adjustments to the paper cutter choke. Very rarely don't finish from this position. Not allowing the opponent to turn in and your elbow to hit the floor is key! Give it a go!

03.01.2022 Don't forget Yoga tonight folks at 7pm. It has helped my flexibility already after 4 sessions! I have bilateral hip replacements and can now rest in a side splits low enough to rest my forearms on the ground! Whether you are a jiu jitsu person or not, improving your flexibility will massively increase the way your body feels and increase your capacity to do things with it! It also makes a big difference to your mental game! See you at 7pm!

02.01.2022 Great news that Yoga with Jade will become a permanent fixture on the TimeTable. We have secured Jade's services Monday and Wednesday nights at 8pm-9pm, and 7-8am Tuesdays and Thursdays. 02.01.2022 I wanted to voice my opinion on something that has been really bugging me about instagram and Facebook Jiu Jitsu pages lately. I have seen far too many, and in my opinion 1 is too many, that make crude, chauvinistic, misogynistic and overtly sexualised 'jokes' surrounding women in Jiu Jitsu. Quite frankly it disgusts me. Jiu Jitsu doesn't 'belong' to men. Real men don't feel the need to make these kinds of 'jokes', it makes me cringe when I see it. The comments are often th...e worst. Ive even questioned the posters about it and I get "relax man, its just a joke"...jokes are funny when everyone is laughing at them. If you are making these kinds of 'jokes' you are a disgrace to our inclusive and accepting community and need to have a good look at yourself and your attitude. If you are an instructor you owe it to your students, to ALL of your students to call it out and make sure that it is addressed immediately. If you think im wrong or that im over reacting then you're a big part of the problem, a problem that has been endemic in male dominated sports for too long. Have a great day. Dan

01.01.2022 True Grit was born from the desire to teach Jiu Jitsu to kids. This amazing art is more than simply winning medals in competition, which many other clubs focus on. I believe Jiu Jitsu to be much, much more than this. I have seen kids grow and develop from quiet, anxiety riddled children with low self esteem and self confidence, to young people who stand tall with their shoulders back and chin high. I have even had first hand feedback from a parent who's son was picked on by ...the school bully! He handled the situation perfectly by taking the bully to the ground, getting to a dominant position and talking to him. No punches thrown, no injuries to either party, well, perhaps just a severely bruised ego ; ) We at True Grit realise that kids learn differently to adults. If they aren't having fun, they won't want to do it. We also realise that kids don't lean well from people they do not like, so maintaining positive personal relationships in class is crucial to their development. We emphasise fair play, respect for self and others, and good old fashion manners. Hand shaking (elbows at this point ; ), eye contact, please and thank you as well as keeping their language at training positive and encouraging. Jiu Jitsu is the perfect activity for kids of all ages, boys AND girls! Their fitness will improve as well as their performance at school. They will learn as much, if not more about themselves as they do Jiu Jitsu. Term 3 starts in under 2 weeks. If you would like to know more, please contact me on 0405775806, or you can email at [email protected]. I hope to see you seen. Dan

01.01.2022 Throwback Tuesday. A choke option from closed guard. Its important when going for two handed chokes, to break the opponents posture. Failure to do so just increases the likelihood of a successful defence. It will also require a much greater amount of strength. Obviously we want to be able to finish anyone, not just those who we may be stronger than. A submission applied whilst gritting ones teeth as your grips blow out is a submission in need of technical adjustment.

01.01.2022 Don't forget we have our first Judo seminar with Harry Cassar, Olympic hopeful and National team member. The first session will be $25 per person for the 90 minute session. Come and get your throw on and learn how to hit people with the planet!
