22.01.2022 Valley Seal is often an overlooked component on many roofs in almost all modern homes built in the last 15-20 years. Builders have moved towards dry valleys where the cut tiles only need to be cut 100mm apart to comply with Australian standards, this is clearly an endeavour to save cost, at the expense of your energy bills. While dry valleys are unlikely to leak water, there is still substantial space between the tile and the valley iron where wind/drafts, pests & vermin c...an easily enter the roof space at will, before I mention how much harder unguarded valleys are on your insulation, where keeping your house warm in winter and cool in summer gets more expensive. With enough wind its not surprising for wind spray to find its way into the roof cavity. Previously, houses built before the 2000s, it was standard to mud the valleys with mortar, however, over time it was found this method of sealing the valley slowly rusted out the valley iron and required ongoing maintenance, where even minor cracks in the mortar cause leaks from water getting trapped behind the mortar and back flowing into the roof cavity. Fast forward to the present time, we have whats known as valley seal. This product is a bitumen impregnated foam strip, and it solves all previous issues, 1. Its water proof 2. 08.01.2022 Some of last weeks efforts went toward restoring some beautiful old glazed terracotta roofs. Previously riddled with moss, these two came out great. I started on the far roof and it wasnt long before the neighbours prompted me to do their roof as well. Got them looking the way they did back when they were first built, as terracotta never fades... 08.01.2022 Getting your ridge re-pointed is essential roof maintenance required every 10 years. Everyday I see 100s of homes with sad looking unkept roofs that require urgent roof maintenance. 04.01.2022 True Roof and its expertise was called upon once again, this time to re-bed & point the ridge caps of an old and relatively steep terracotta roof in Northcote. As you can see, Ive gone above and beyond at this 3 way join into a valley. Even if by a series of terribly unfortunate events and water did manage to find its way inside the 3-way join, another line of defence awaits. This Lead work will make make it very difficult for water to find its way into the house, through... the most vulnerable aspect of the roof, the ridge joins. Unless somebodys up there with a hose shooting water down into the ridgeline, youre safe from water entry here. Looking closer the lead was given a lip near any possible entry points up so water cant travel into the dwelling, and it will exit through some weepholes Ill install later.
